Is it possible to make this thing control a background instance of warcraft? I can run 2 copies just fine and I'm tired of alt-tabbing.

Nope.

You'll need software assistance to do that, in the form of something like AutoHotKey, Keyclone, or Octopus.

Each of those tools has a number of threads about them around the forms, with most of the important ones being sticky.
