Personally, I'd do what you mentioned towards the end and do Balance spec.

However, to solve some of your melee confusion, whenever you want to get both toons within melee range, simply run through your target and turn around with the pally. This will also help with giving Drood cat position for back attacks. My first team was two rogues, so I got used to that pretty quick.
