Yes, but how do you start it up without a power button? That is his problem.

    RTFM -

Find the two pins that you would normally plug the power button into. SHORT these two pins (close the circuit) - you can use a screw driver, paper clip, anything metal will work.

Yes, I'm 100% serious here. I do it all the time.

Once again, if you are directing that at me, we grasp the concept of dry/wet circuits. How to do this elegantly is what the OP wants. Not dropping shit into his case. Jesus people, do you not even Read The Fucking Thread??

I like the button linked above. Placing that in a wooden desk with hidden wiring would be pretty damn nice.

Just keep your panties on. I just made an offhand comment, no need to go into a vein bursting convulsion about it.

Seeing as how the power button circuit requires a simple momentary switch and you seem to be building something special, I would use this opportunity to incorporate something neat. Maybe a Lego switch, an Easy Button, a telegraph sender, hidden microswitch, you can use almost anything.

Elegantly - as you put it - would be to hook up an actual power button the way ATX was intended to be used. But since the OP wants to disregard the way the system was designed.....

....and RTFM is Read The Fucking Manual - in the context of finding out where the pins are on your specific motherboard. But hey, if you want to fly off the handle, go right ahead.

Question for you. How do you power up the system with no power button to enter the bios and enable the "wake on lan" settings? Or the "wake on keyboard / mouse" options? (without using a screwdriver / paperclip / etc).

And then later when the wake-on-lan / wake on mouse/keyboard fails to actually wake up the PC, what do you do then? (because they will fail, sooner or later)

Someone already said it, you need a momentary on switch/button. Go check out radio shack, they may have em. You can buy the vandel from Frozen pc's, but those guys are out of New Jersey ( I think.....somewhere around there though) and shipping isn't the greatest. I usually buy from

    PPC

which I think is in florida, but unless Frozen has lowered their pricing on all their stuff, PPC is usually lower $$ and better ship rates overall. Not sure about the switch, $7 for the vandel switch isn't bad. Or try mountain mods, think they are out of oregon

    Mountainmods

Kinda motivates me to start back up and finish my computer case project. Have like $1000 in just cooling hardware sitting around waiting to go into that case. Just feeling too lazy recently to go to the shop on my own time.

http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.html use this inside the case ... then set the bios to wake on keyboard or whatever you desire.

Don't mean to resurrect an old thread but I'll post this in case anyone stumbles across it using the search feature.

I had this exact scenario when I threw together an extra machine for multiboxing using spare parts. I ended up building the machine in a shoebox, which naturally did not come with an on/off button... A quick trip to the hardware store for the cheapest doorbell I could find, and I was in business; worked perfectly.

I had a few pictures but hell if I can find them at the moment.

edit: hmm - found some and made a quick collage
