yup... "could stop working any day".. 3 years and running for keyclone... 11 years for Solid ICE.

as for the donation model... hahahaha

try that at work tomorrow. tell your boss that you don't wish to 'demand' a payment, as you could stop working any day now... and instead, he should pay you what he feels is fair.

sure, the first week you may get something close to what you normally get... but when you don't complain about the reduction in payment (not allowed to complain about a lack of donations after all)... the second week you would get 1/10th your salary. by the third week, you'd get nothing.

even though you are getting NOTHING.. you MUST continue doing your work... for YEARS.

socialism and communism works great... when other people are paying the bills.

Keyclone, seems like your politics is clouding your argumentation - but let's go over it:

Ever heard of "past performance is no guarantee of future results" - Most business before they close, have been running fine for years... that doesn't mean they don't have accidents...

I'm not saying you should do it any other way than what you wish (as I said "you're free to use the model that works for you; it's your work.") but please don't try to ridicule other possible models; *my* *money* would rather go to a software that doesn't phone home each time to continue to work.

Your analogy with work would be that the day your employer decides to fire you or you quit or die; all the software you ever wrote and he paid for stops working.

(and yes wow is like that, a subscription model; I just don't want another subscription fee and I think the chance of blizzard closing shop are a bit slimmer than Solid ICE's or Freddie's)

I'd prefer an open source with donation model (I paid for my Jamba and be glad to donate to HKN like I paid Keyclone but I'm not 100% comfortable with the "could stop working any day" model) but hey, until there is such solution... I love HKN :-)
Thanks for the kind words. If you want an open source project, maybe you should start one.

so when you ask your boss for a raise stating you had done a great job over the last year... and he says you're past performance means jack, and that you're looking tired and a bit grouchy... don't complain if he decreases your pay or changes your pay model to donations of his choosing, when he chooses. of course, he could also point out that he has already paid you for your work and he now expects you to continue doing the same job for the next 10 years for nothing.

and if you are concerned Freddie or I could disappear... you could always hit our donation buttons weekly to insure we stay around.
