I run a mixed group: Prot Pally, Ele Shaman, Boomkin, Fire Mage and Holy Priest (might switch my mage to Arcane and my priest to Disc though, have to do some research on that).

After hitting 80 and running some heroics I can see the appeal of a Pally/DK and 4 shaman group. This setup allows you to have an extra DPS (i.e., no dedicated healer) but still have AOE heals. Shaman seem to be easier to gear up to get some serious spellpower as well. It's pretty much a killer group. I'd even guess it's really the best multiboxing group for PVE (although I have no first hand experience).

In my case, I wanted mixed classes so I could have a lot of options later on if I switched to raiding...something I am not sure I could do as a boxer. A mixed group is typically just a tank, 3 caster dps and a dedicated healer. In general, the dps classes make no difference whatsoever. You will work out the macros. All I do is hit a single key. I would do the same if they were all shamans, warlocks, mages or a mixed bag. The big difference is a dedicated healer vs. four DPS that are mediocre [but satisfactory] healers.

To maximize your DPS the synergy is important with mixed classes. For example, having both a warlock and a boomkin might not be as good as having just one and a totally different class due to key buff stacking issues. Just pick any 3 DPS classes you like but make sure their key group buffs can stack.

As for a healer, a good AOE healer is important IMO. At least for PVE. Anything is doable of course, but being able to spam some AOE heals is much easier in a lot of cases.

For this my personal choice is Holy Priest. Circle of Healing, Prayer of Healing, Prayer of Mending, Binding Heal. And I believe I heard they are increasing the healing of CoH, and PoH will be able to be cast on other parties for raiding. Pretty powerful.

I've found my warlock a bit more difficult to balance (just haven't taken the time to get the rotation right and the felguard seems to have a mind of it's own)
Just a tip if you don't do this already -- put the pet on defensive and it will auto-attack whatever target you start attacking.

Alternately you can have a separate key (with a modifier) to tell the pet to attack/return in cases where you don't want the pet running over to a mob and aggroing everything around it as well.

I used to play 1 paladin+4 shaman but decided to gear my hunter. Took him in and swapped out my "main" shaman since i can do naxx 10 with him.

Saying that hunters only bring trueshot aura isn't completley true:

Misdircetion - 3 attacks redirected at my tank. <- I use this with avengers shield. Macro is simple /target [target=tank] /cast misdirection
Tranq shot - Tranqualize a enrage, works on most heroic bosses like the last one in gun drak. Do not work on timed bosses like Eck.
Masters Call - This and hand of freedom together is awsome! Does the same as hand of freedom but has a longer cooldown and last shorter.

Next patch he will be MM wich can be castsequence macroed effective, wich is basicly impossible with survival.

I also run a mixed group and its great. My only question would be the value of a Hunter. Sometimes you need to get up close and personal and the hunter has a problem with range and this may drop your dps a lot. I find that a magma totem, 2 x arcane explosions and a holy explosion are great in close range. My adive is to play the toons you want there are many great combinations its more about finding a strat that works for you and how you want to play.
