I'm watching this with interest. Eve has always been a game that I wanted to get into, but I first played it when it was first released and the learning curve .. what learning curve. Players all seemed so paranoid about spies and the like, that they never gave others much time, unless they knew them.
There is no real analog to spies in any other game, and it is an interesting facet of the game. At the high end, they push you to build social structures based on chains of trust, which are much more interesting and complex than those motivated by want (better epix). The reason that folks screen for spies is that while there are good reasons to want more people, there are potential losses (intel reporting from spies, theft, scams, sabotoge, etc).

And the learning curve is definitely there, really there is nothing like it out there so you have to learn
a)what you like to do
b) how to do it
c) how to do better than most people, or at least some of your competitors ( even many pve aspects are somewhat competitive)

Eve does not define the goal, it gives you tools to be a part of an interesting system. Most folks don't get past item A, as most games define the goals for you. It is really a bigger shift than I can properly emphasize. When you get the hang of it, it is really an immensely intricate game. I went nose-deep into most aspects of the game, and they really are quite interesting, and each have their nuances and surprises.

The biggest draw for me was and still remains that it rewards thought and skill in almost every aspect, and that even losses are valuable learning experiences. For now I'm enjoying the brain-deadness of button-clicking and pve content of WoW with some work buddies, but I figure I'll reactivate some of my accounts one of these days.
