Default Noob question characters and logging in

I want to "multi box" on a single machine.
Am I understanding this correctly: you can only be logged into 1 ACCOUNT at one time?

I can't use the 4 client windows to login created CHARACTERS on the SAME account ???
If so, why can't you do that??

So I would have to buy separate accounts for each character ??

You can only log into one character at a time on an account. So, open 4 windows, login using 4 different accounts. Have fun playing 4 characters on 4 accounts at one time.

Thank you for the reply and clarification... but why can't you log into the same account multiple times?

What is the reason behind preventing that?

I'm guessing WoW's server doesn't allow multiple logins to the same account,

What happens if you try... does some error message come up?

If you attempt to log in to the same account it will log you out of the other session. You can only have 1 active session at any one time.

You'll get disconnected if you try to log onto the same account twice.

That's why you need 5 accounts if you want to five box.

My guess is they prevent this to keep you from sharing one account with all of your friends or family.

Even if they limited it to just the same IP address this would still allow one account for everyone in a family, which is not good for the bottom line.

    look at it this way:

how many gold farmers could you get on one account if Blizzard allowed multiple logins?

They should just limit the amount of characters you can create then, say like just 5.
That would limit the amount of "family, friends sharing" the account too, and obviously make it so you can't all log into the same character.

i already hate the 10 chars per realm limit.
oh you mean 5 chars on at once limit?

but still, two chars on at once means you're using airtime you're not supposed to. the easiest way to resolve that would be to make people buy two accounts so we cant double up on our airtime. i say airtime because im currently mental blocked as to what the actual term is.
