I can't argue that is not functional for your purposes but what do you do when one dies and you need to take over? To me, the information density is just so amazingly low.

I decided to make getting all this to work on a laptop part of the technical challenge :-) I'm confined to a laptop for now, but once i stop roaming around i'll probably get five complete computers for this.

is just so amazingly low.

So far they are all level 3. I started yesterday after work :-)
But yes, that is a problem. Somewhat, i have quite good eyes.
First of all i need to figure out how to switch main with macro's and such,
but i have seen that there are post about that here.
I'm thinking it should not be all impossible to change the window size on
the fly. Or i will just play with the other windows minimized, and click one of them up if the main dies.

Hardware vice i'm pretty much confined to the size i have now. Getting an
17" inch wide screen on the planes as hand luggage is about as big as i can stand :-)

That would be great but I do not believe it to be practical given the constraints of 5 separate DX9 programs.

When your main dies, you generally have seconds to switch over, if that. There is not even time to unminimize, in my experience.
