Default Anyone have a group that uses 2 different tanks?

I need to gear up my DK tank so he can actually get my DK group through a heroic. I have decided to run my shaman on him until he gets at least 100 emblems. Problem is my shaman are all using FTL macros that have my Paladin tank's name. I set up 4 folders of WoW and I want to make it so WoW1+WoW2 folders are for the macros that have paladin + 4 shaman. WoW3+WoW4 will have macros that will be crappy DK tank + 4 shaman. Is this possible? Or will it keep resetting my macros? I dont need to move any positions on my action bars, just need to change names in the macros for FTL. I really really hope this will work and I wont have to redo the macros back to my old paladin tank once I get my DK geared. Any insight would be much appreciated!

Also: I do know that you can put a no update macro line in the wow config file. I'm just unsure that will be enough to prevent screw ups?

From what I'm understanding that you're asking -- whether you can have multiple sets of macros based on which folder you launch from -- then the answer would be no.

I believe it was patch 3.0 that introduced all macros being saved on the server. This means when you need to edit them, you can only do it online.

So there is no way to force the macros in the folder to update to the server everytime I log in? If not, that's really lame... who is this feature supposed to benefit?

They made this change so that you didn't have to manually carry a macros.txt file (or whatever it was) around with you and copy it to any machine you played from. For me, this was very nice for when I frequently switched between my laptop and PC. The downside is that you can no longer do what you're suggesting.

All we need to do now is keep telling Blizzard to increase the number of macros we can have. "Disk space is cheap, buy moar!"

EDIT: i typed this while being rushed out the door. ill re edit it as needed if needed when i get back from dinner

Actually this can be done. first you have to turn off your client syncing with the server you can do this by typing /console synchronizeMacros 0 load up every client from all the folders you want to launch wow from.

This will keep your clients from uploading or downloading any macros you edit.

Now make the macro as you normally would on one of your clients.
Then open another client that you want the macro to be different on. Make the macro have the exact same name and make sure the macro is in the same location on the editor (the window that pops up when you type /macro)

Heres how it works and what the results should be. When you put skills on your action bars the server obviously knows which skills went where. All the macros are numbered, so say you typed /macro and made 3 macros. they are first put in alphabeticle order and placed in slots 1,2,3. If you put the 3rd macro on your action bar in say slot 2. only thing the server knows (with syncing off) is macro #3 is in slot 2 on bar one.

So as long as your macros are in the same order and named the same. the actual function of it can be different and therefore you can do what the OP requested

I think I understand what you are saying, but since I am just changing the name(from /assist tank1 to tank2,etc) in existing macros and not moving macros to different spots... I should be ok?

what kind of action bar mod do you use, if its macaroon (trinity bars with a new name) you can set up a button layout/profile with macros inside the buttons themselves... save the profiles and give it a name such as dk tank profile .... then load up and redo your macros in the bars for your paladin... then save that profile. Then all you need to do depending on what character you've got going with you, all you need to do is load up your correct profile!

its a little bit of front leg work, but i've done this and it works like a charm... the cool part is you can even set it up and save buttons positions and skills positions, so if you wanna try a new spec on your deathknight, shamans, or pally, you can save the profile you had, make a new one and save it with your different spec, then BAM! when you respec you wont have to do much but load the right profile to help! !

Of course you could also change over to a focus based leader system, and this all becomes moot I've grown accustom to using both systems together here and there, i make a bar and make it hidden or auto hide at the top of my screen and i can hotkey the buttons to help me change leaders on the fly... works super for my needs

Exactly as long as you only change the actual macro itself and leave the name and location the same you will be fine. you just have to make sure you disable the client from syncing up with the server.

heres a few more commands- ill copy and paste it from a write i did on my guild forum

type in this to turn off uploading/downloading your configuration
    /console synchronizeConfig 0

To turn off uploading and downloading your keybindings
    /console synchronizeBindings 0

To turn off your uploading and downloading Macros
    /console synchronizeMacros 0

Hope this helps. if you need any extra help let me know
