The total number of same-level mobs that must be killed to reach level 60 with no rest or quests is 16,971 which would take approximately 76 hours at 16 seconds per kill.

An amusing but probably not very significant figure is that the half-way point to 60 for raw experience point accumulation is 12,550 XP into level 48. Halfway to 70 for raw experience point accumulation is 344,500 XP into level 62. In actual practice, quests contribute significantly to XP so the half-way point is somewhere below this.
The segment you quoted here from WoWWiki is before 2.3.

    From the article about 2.3:

This is listed underneath the pre-2.3 table on the WoWWiki page. The old amount of XP to 60 was 4 084 700 for 10 847 000 total to 70. Half of that total is 5 423 500 which is well over the 60 mark.

    5 423 500 - 4 084 700 = 1 338 800. This is how far after 60 you are at the halfway mark.

Now, let's subtract the 60-61 and 61-62 marks.

    1 338 800 - 574 700 - 614 400 = 270 100.

I must be missing something. On an interesting note, if you add that 344 500 to my result of 270 100, you get almost exactly the amount you need to get to 63. I think that someone wrote down the wrong number on that WoWWiki page.

I also realize that I used one wrong number on my previous calcultion post. Going back to correct it now.

The problem is that these numbers don't account for the fact that your XP goes up for the level of mobs you kill.

One would think that each level = the same amount of equal level mobs killed in order to level. But I don't think thats the case either. It takes longer and longer to complete each level as you go.

The numbers I was dealing with have nothing to do with the amount of XP per mob you get. They're just flat numbers saying "you need X XP to reach level Y." The numbers do not care if you quest, grind, instance, or PL that level, but that's how much XP you will need.

The formula for the amount of XP per mob does work to an extent and you can notice some consistencies if you watch close enough, but it's more of a rough guideline sometimes.

Default The new halfway mark is about halfway through fifty-five.

I understand that this topic seems to have died, but I stumbled across it and I only needed to add one column to my spreadsheet to get the answer. Based on the Wowwiki page and a table of experience to level (I forget where I found that) I figured out same-level-kills to level. It currently takes 28,439 kills of same-level mobs to hit level seventy.

    *sobs*

The only psychologically important levels for me are 40 (mounts, yay... though 30 may take on a greater significance in the future!) and 58 (Outland, yay!).
