Default Gaining XP from warlock pet

In my time spent scouring the various WoW forums, I remember reading something recently saying that if a warlock was ungrouped with someone...the demon could help kill a mob but the original tagger get the XP.....eg:

    - Me (warlock) is in Northrend with my GF who's playing her rogue....but the characters are not in a group together.
    - Rogue tags a mob and starts to do damage.
    - Warlock sends in felguard to help with DPS.
    - The warlock does NOT engage the mob in any way

Is it the case that the rogue will suffer no loss to XP?

    This is incorrect.

(I already tried that with shaman totems. :< )

As far as I'm aware warlock pets are different from totems. I believe that attacking with a totem is actually treated as the shaman engaging the mob.

An easy way to prove this would be to get a totem to kill a mob without the shaman attacking it at all - if you can loot the mob, then I am correct. If a warlock's demon attacks and kills a mob without anyone else hitting it...then nobody gets to loot it as it's seen as the demon's kill.

You can unfortunatly not loot anything killed by totems. :<

I wish they fixed that bug tbh, been around since beta! Very frustrating when boosting. (Though thunderstorm makes up for it now with a viable aoe that actually tags mobs. :> )

Hunter bm pets work extremly well for that. Unless it has been fixed ofc. Just tag with the group, and let the out of the group hunter, his pet, kill the mob.

What you describe will work, PROVIDED that the rogue is in a party of at least two, and the warlock/hunter is out of the party. Solo, it wont' work.

A way to do it for a solo character is to have cross faction support. A Horde booster kills an Alliance tagged mob (or visa versa), and the solo "tagger" still gets full experience. This would probably NOT be a good idea on a PVP server! :P

Does the character grouped with the rogue have to be in proximity? EG, could they be in Orgrimar while the rogue and warlock is in Northrend?

Good question. I don't know. I'll have to check that out this evening, unless someone else answers before that.

This sounds like a RAF question, but I don't see any mention of RAF in the tread so far. If it is, then no. RAF bonus is only awarded if the two accounts are within kill credit range of each other.

Also, I don't think that not getting loot rights when a totem single-handedly kills a mob is a "bug". When the game first came online, Blizzard started to quickly nerf all these passive xps gaining systems. Hunters used to just AFK in a spot and put the pet on aggressive and would get xps. Shamans didn't really have that advantage (originally only 2 mins per totem), but I think they started nerfing credit for anything were the player themselves didn't cause at least some damage.

I haven't confirmed this, but I think the principle that Blizzard worked out is that if you are within a certain level range of the higher level toon (like 9 levels), then you would still get full credit for the kill. Outside of this range, you only get a smaller percentage of the regular xps, scaling based on the level range difference. A level 80 warlock (or even pet) doing almost all the damage for, say, a level 30 rogue would mean very little xps for the rogue. A warlock pet is still considered a "player" for the purposes of calculations.
