All Dual Core 5 Boxers Please Speak Up!

ok so i was just curious as to who is 5boxing an a dual core CPU. if you are and you are reading this, then would you mind answering a couple questions for me?

1) what is the rest of your system specs? (i.e. how much RAM, what power supply, HDD and what video card)

2) how much CPU usage are you getting in capitol cities (excluding dalaran because everybody has problems there). what are they in 40 man raids? what are they just running around questing or doing 5 man instances? [just a rough estimation is fine here if you haven't done any tests or anything like that but if somebody were to test a couple of these i would extremely appreciate it!]

3) how playable is it? do you lag and lose /follow on your slaves often?

4) what are your graphic/resolution settings set to?

5) do you have your 5 instances of WoW running on separate cores or all running off both? if you have tested both of these then what showed better performance?

6) do you have your frame rate capped on your main/slaves? if so what is it set to on your slaves/main?

7) are your WoW folders symlinked?

if anybody can answer any of these questions it would be extremely apreciated.

1. Dual core here laptop lol. 2.5ghz 4gb ram 8600m gt nvidia
2. normally 95-100 % but still is playable havent tried dalaran kinda scared haha.
3. Graphics set bare minimum
4.I have my 5 instances on both all 5 are being split on both cores. So 1.2.3.4.5 are on both core 1 and 2 did that and the 95-100% went to 80-90%
5. Main is at 35 fps slaves 10-15
6. symlinked never got into it
So thats it for me it works but buying a quad core desktop to run slaves on so they all get 30-40 fps and run main on laptop so i can have settings set high.

cool thanks suicidesspyder. i imagine that if you had another 4G of RAM it could possibly help out your performance substantially, or at least a little bit. but like you said in another post your laptops mobo can't add another 4G.

Yea sadley. Get this though after i got my computer two weeks later they came out with the version that allows 8gb boy was i mad lol. Although, like i said i will be getting another computer but this one will be a desktop that will be able to handle 4 accounts same time np so my main can have max settings.

1) Intel Duo-Core @ 3.0ghz - 8 gigs of ram, 800 or 1000watt power supply (I forget which but the thing is HUGE, I had to modify the case to get it to fit), dual 250gb HD @ 7200RPM and a Geforce 8800 GTS w/ 640 megs of ram video card.

I'm all about getting better performance. Running 3 boxes it works perfectly and I can run all windows on maxed settings. However at 5 I run at minimal settings except distance is maxed (So I can see mobs / enemy players). I want to upgrade the dual core to a quad core - I'd really like to get an i7 quad core but that would require a new motherboard and new license of Vista as they tie the key to the motherboard, bastards.

2) When running 5boxes I'm always at 100% usuage regardless of where I am. 1 box is closer to 50% I think. Hence upgrading to a quad core.

In lightly populated areas I typically get 20-30 FPS on all windows (I haven't yet figured out how to max my main and lower my slaves). In Ironforge it drops down to 10-15fps - I haven't been to Dalaran yet or done any raiding with the 5 box team. They're only L70.

3) Overall it is very playable. Occasionally slaves do drop off from follow which is irritating, usually its from getting stuck behind something in the enviroment such as a tree. Someone posted a mod (here) that flashes the screen when /follow breaks but I can't seem to find it now.

4) 1960/1280 or whatever the standard 22" widescreen resolution is (I'm at work).

5) I'm running them of all cores togather, I'm not aware of how to seperate them. For PVP however I would be interested in reducing my team to 4 and running areas with a partner, if I did that putting each instance of WOW on it's own core may make sense.

6) Nope, I'm still learning Keyclone.

7) Symlinked? Sorry, what does that mean? I run all of my instances out of one WOW folder and all using the same WOW.exe - does it make a difference in performance if they're in seperate folders? I'd do that if it does.

Cramming 5 instances of WoW into two cores sucks. The price increase in the system is less than 1 month of paying for 5x accounts, and it'll be MUCH more enjoyable. The difference between an overclocked E6600 (at 3.6GHz) and a stock clock Q6600 was very noticeable. Get the Q6600. Then 5-box. Intentionally building a new 2-core system for 5-boxing is something we've been saying NOT to do for quite some time.

yes i realize this and i am defiantly going to heed everybody's advice and go with a quad core. i was just curious as to who on these forums is actually boxing with a dual core. this thread is purely for curiosity. with how cheap quad cores are right now, and they are only going to get cheaper, i don't see why anybody wouldn't go with a quad core if they were planning boxing anything more then 2, maybe 3 of anything. also with how cheap RAM is i don't see why anybody wouldn't max out there mb's RAM capability.

Frankly my 6400 duel core amd is doing me just fine. Wow is not cpu intensive at all, its getting data from the wow folder to your memory and getting that to your graphics card. That means that cpu clock speed is more important then whats done each clock cycle. In other words get the cpu with the fastest clock speed regardless of number of cores. I7 is the best though no matter what.

Well opps slilencer says get quad not sure why but well doh. Usually his advise is correct.

Why get a slower quad over a faster dual?

I went from an Athlon X2 6000+ (3.0ghz dual core) to a phenom 9600 (2.3ghz quad core) and saw a SIGNIFICANT performance stabilization. Everything ran tolerably on the dual core system but I would find myself waiting when the systems processor choked completely. Moving to the 2.3ghz quad core I had slightly lower performance on the main (still quite playable) and that performance was the same in almost any situation.

I can tell you that since I started 5 boxing I've gone from a 3.0ghz dual core with 4gb ram and a 7900gt to a 3.0ghz quad core with 8gb ram and an 8800gt, and by far the best bang for the buck was the 8gb of ram (of course reloading the OS to go 64bit was a PITA but so worth it in the end.) The 3.0ghz quad core chip REALLY made it great as well, and for the price you can't beat it.
