I was browsing the Wiki and reading some of the thread links in the "GM Conversations" section, when I came across this comment , made on May 20, 2008:

If this is Blizzard's policy on multi-boxing, its enough to get me to quit in utter disgust.

Here is the armory of the person who made that comment, some eight months ago.

Now I'm curious as to how many others there are, who made "I WILL QUIT" comments and are still playing (and who have more achievement points on their one character, than I have on any three of mine!). And people wonder why Blizzard doesn't listen to them...

Don't mean to raid on your parade, but it's a very effective way to get your message accross as a consumer. When you cancel your account you are able to include a reason for doing so. That will stay in the system and be reviewed regardless of whether or not you renew your account.

Canceling a service is. Threatening to cancel, then not canceling? Not so effective. Threatening to cancel, and still playing the game you swore you'd stop playing? Months after you threatened to quit? Not effective, except at making me LOL.

For about 2 months the Oceanic servers were highly unstable and raiding was almost impossible, 4 days of the week it was. Many, many players including myself cancelled our accounts due to the unplayability and lack of compensation, yet I'd say 95% of us still play today.

That is different, those servers were all but unplayable, and players were quitting because they could not play. Blizzard was aware of this problem and had at least a couple of threads going where they were asking for input and feedback and trying to keep players informed, because they were concerned about losing them to a legitimate issue. Once that issue was properly addressed, it doesn't surprise me that players came back. They wanted to play, and were having their play experience ruined.

That's not the same as saying "this issue that has little or no effect on me offends my delicate sensibilities, so I am going to threaten to quit. NOW WHAT, BLIZZARD?!?!?" Coming back (or never even leaving, he claims he had canceled because he was traveling for a month anyway, but who knows?) after making such a feeble and childish threat makes him look like a whiny baby who was just throwing a tantrum.

When I cancelled my account, I renewed it the next day. My message still got across though. He probably did the same thing, or as the guy after me said, cancelled, then sold.

I knew I was never going to quit the game, regardless of how bad the lag was. But the option to cancel and leave a reason is very powerful.

In the Industry, people threaten to strike, and do, if conditions aren't improved. Often nothing gets done but they come back to work anyway.

Yes, but the reason you quit was because server conditions had become intolerable, wasn't it? And you returned when that situation was remedied? That is understandable.

Edit: I see from your post that you canceled one day and renewed the next. I'm not sure how well that works, as the service was never interrupted. Posting in the threads that were provided for this might have been a better action. Otherwise it's like those "gas strikes" that people try to get others to join them on, by holding off on gas purchases for one day in order to hurt gas company profits. When they go to fill up the next day, the previous day's loss is remedied, and the companies are no longer concerned.

This fellow threatened to quit over something that had little effect on his gameplay, and possibly even none. And he is playing now, even though the situation that he considered to be unacceptable to his principles (which is the basis of his threat) has NOT changed. He was effectively claiming to make a stand on principle, and either never went through with it, or he gave in and returned and has leveled to 80 in spite of the fact that multiboxing is still allowed. Or, as someone suggested, he sold the account, which also undermines his attempt to make it a moral or ethical issue-- the game company offends his sensibilities by allowing multiboxing, but he has no qualms about violating the contract he agreed to in order to make some extra cash?

Any way you slice it, his actions show that he is either a faker or a hypocrite. Not because he may have left and returned (hell, I took a break from WoW late last year), but because of the circumstances involved. He either fell off of his high horse, or he wasn't sitting on one in the first place.

Several times, I've quit and cited a reason in the comments section when they ask for your feedback. When I come back, I'm often surprised to find those issues addressed. I'm sure someone is reading those things, somewhere.

That said, threatening to quit is a piss poor method of trying to get your way.

Yep, when I canceled my accounts last year, I gave the reason "bored" because I was bored. Some of my friends quit to play Warhammer and they left that as their reason. It's good to let them know because it's potentially lost revenue for them. I don't think that there's anything wrong with someone using that feature when they cancel, especially if it's a case where the person would like to keep playing but there are problems that suck the fun out of it.

The guy I mentioned in the OP was just being melodramatic. As for the possibility that he sold the account, that's hard to square with his comments in the thread, in which he repeatedly brings up the "morals" of certain things and makes clear that he hates gold sellers and power leveling services. If he did sell the account, his argument is kind of embarrassing and moot. Blizzard still gets paid, and he has gone against his own standards in order to NOT make a point about multiboxing. I still find it LOL-worthy. Especially since I found that I had replied to his "I'm quitting" post with this comment:

I can respect someone who is willing to take this step if they really feel that Blizzard is ruining the game. I admit that I am expecting you to return, probably before your subscription even expires. But so many people make grandiose statements and threats and always come up short when it's time to stand behind what they've said. Good luck to you, although I expect that whichever MMORPG you try next... you will run into a multiboxer sooner or later.

There was another player who was constantly making noise about MBing and either threatening to quit or claiming that they had quit. This player even added "last day: Feb XX, 2008" in his sig to make clear that he was as good as gone. He apparently got himself forum-banned at some point, as his posts are all gone and only the replies to his posts show what he was saying at the time. I looked up his armory and sure enough... his warrior is level 80 and his armory is updated as of two days ago.
