you can't drop mining, how would you feed your Blacksmithing or Jewel Crafting ?
You spend a day powerleveling mining on one of the shammies.

Well, it looks like BS/mining can at least help me out for the time being. I just scanned the Ah to compare cost for mats for the Titansteel guardian/bonecrusher. If i bought all the mats to make 1 mace it woud cost 1058G....cheapest bonecrusher(out of 8 )on the AH was 1800G. Then if I smelt my own titansteel bars, I would save 50G per bar.....bringing the total mat cost down to 758G. I understand it would cost a good bit to lvl BS on my main. But from the prices on the AH currently, I would save prob 500-1000G per mace to make these myself. Now considering I was thinking about buying 4 guardians and 1 bonecrusher.....that saving would be 2500-5000G. Then when you bring in the fact that i can also craft my epic helm/boots, extra gem slots......it just seems BS/mining might be a solid cobination of my team.

Now this is all based off of 1800G for the bonecrusher, which could be high. I have not actually researched prices before today.

    Er....

Or you could do the same thing without leveling BS at all and just have a BS make them for you for a 50g tip (12.5g per mace)... why level BS just to make yourself a BoE item? Thats thousands and thousands of gold to level BS to save 50g??

Normally I would say yes, get rid of Enchanting but...ouch, enchanting costs by far the most to level or takes the longest to level, and getting rid of it would cause me severe pain.

But yeah, the good news is you can keep mining since the +50stam/500hp is a great tank buff, and just drop enchanting for JC.

JC is also one of the fastest and cheapest professions to level (the mats cost a lot around the 265-300 range but other than that they're really cheap and easy to get).

So its up to you whether you should drop enchanting or not - the bottom line is right now JC provides AWESOME benefits for anyone (tank or not), but after you get epic trinkets, and after new epic gems come out the benefits might not be as stark. But of course JC right now can also make you ~200g a day in about 60 seconds doing the daily
JC isn't the cheapest at least on my server. I easily dropped over 6000g on leveling it. Most of it was for mats pre-BC level. Lower level mats are outrageously priced on Mag.

I agree.. the only professions more difficult for me to level was BS and Engineering. Enchanting isn't too bad if you have tailoring.. turn all cloth into greens & DE. As a 5-boxer, enchanting is cake with all the instance runs. I'd rate the professions in this order for difficulty/time/cost:
    Blacksmithing > Engineering > Jewelcrafting > Leatherworking > Enchanting > Inscription > Alchemy > Tailoring > Mining > Herbalism > Skinning

Note: I'm not factoring in the specializations or learning every recipe.. just in overall cost to get that profession skilled up.

Blacksmithing & Leatherworking suck based on the massive number of mats required for 1 skill point.. like 12 Thorium bars (24 ore) = 1 skill point.

Keep in mind the next major content patch will radically alter some professions probably, it always happens. Right now JC is top and many, many people are dumping their profession for it, Blizzard doesn't want it to become a "mandatory" profession so they will probably buff other profs to compensate. Inscription is pretty much a joke right now as far as professions go, so it will probably get a big boost. We will probably start seeing early patch 3.1 (3.2?) notes in late February.

That said for a tank I think the two combos that really only make sense are JC/mining or JC/BS. Both are fairly similar, with JC/mining a LOT easier to level (like 20x easier and cheaper). I'm alchy/mining on my pally tank, and my level 60 DK tank is JC/BS.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if mining gives +500 health and enchanting you can have +48 stamina from two ring enchants, then wouldn't enchanting be preferable for a pally tank with kings?

    Here is my current plan:
    Pally tank: enchanting, mining
    Owls: JC, TBD
    Shaman healer: TBD

Nope, you're right. The advice to drop enchanting IMO was a little silly. I'd keep it up simply based on the cost of releveling it on another toon. The OP will get a lot more benefit overall by leveling professions on his other toons.

BTW, although not SUPER fast, you can actually level mining on multiple toons at once for the stamina boost - at least in prior patches you could simply not loot the mined resource and everyone in your group can get one skill-up per node. That makes it about the most economical and efficient profession to boost multiple toons.

Also, if you want to max your tank compared to your other toons, blacksmithing is a better option than mining, with the extra sockets you get the benefit of Kings again on your stamina jewels; plus the bonus sockets will scale immediately if epic gems are released as anticipated in the future. OTOH, if you want mining on your main so you can conveniently see nodes, that's cool.

    NO! Don't drop it!

    http://thottbot.com/s59636

You can put 24 stamina on each ring with enchanting. That's perfectly good enough. By being level 325 you're only 25 points away from being able to skill up from WOTLK materials, and you're past the worst part which is 1-300, especially the last 20 levels of it. What profession is going to give you something much better than that? JC is only the "best" because it gives you more options to add extra stats and for the daily, but a boxer makes a lot of money doing shared dailies; the JC daily is only a big deal for a boxer if all your characters can share it.
This is money all my shammies are JC's so I made/make a ton of cash each day regardless of my playtime. It also allows me to concentrate more on Heroics/Raiding then farming for money even with shared dailies it still takes time, which I sometimes don't have alot of.

I didn't even think about it (because I'm new to pally tanking) but the +48 stamina would also help with pally tank's "Touched by Light" talent which increases spell power by an amount equal to 30% of stamina (for an increase of 14.4 SP). Not much, but a little help.

Also, I wasnt suggesting that enchanting is better than JC, but rather noting that if currently you have enchanting & mining and are looking to drop one for JC, then assuming you have another miner in the group a pally tank would be better off with enchanting than mining.
