ATI seems to have overcome their driver issues some time ago. I don't buy based on who made the GPU, I buy based on performance and price, so I've owned a mix of NVIDIA and ATI cards at various times. You probably won't go wrong with either brand these days. Both the 4870 cards from ATI and the 260/280 cards from NVIDIA should do what the OP needs.
Agreed. Get the best bang for the buck. Note that while most manufacturers use ATI or nVidia reference designs, they may not use the same quality parts or manufacturing process.
