Whoever tags the mob for damage first, gets looting rights and experience (if any) from the kill.
If a higher level toon or toons assist in the kill, depending on their level in relation to the taggers level, they can steal some of the experience.

For both Classic Warcraft and Burning Crusade, the magic level was 9.
At lower levels, the magic number was actually higher then 9, but 9 quickly becomes the magic number and maintains being the magic number from a fairly early point.
As in, if you're 10th level and someone 19th level or lower assists you, in killing a mob you have already tagged, you receive full experience.
If the helper(s) are 20th or above, you receive a percentage of experience equivalent to the percentage of damage you (or your group) did.

I'd assume the 9 level differential is still in place for WotLK.
Once you're 71st, your 80's can do any percentage of damage to a mob, with the tagger getting full experience.
Even prior to 71st, quests will be dramatically faster with the mobs dropping so quickly.

The caveat is to not do this in instances, as in drop group and kill after it is tagged, and then regroup to avoid being booted.
Someone did this during the first day of WotLK and had their level reset to 70th shortly after dinging 80 (12 hours earlier then of the Warlock who had the pocket priest).

thx mate for your tips.. but if you read the content in this thread you will notice that i know the ins and outs of how boosting works lol. I'm not asking HOW to do it, but where some good spots in Northrend are. I have just boosted at the onslaught camp from 70 to 73 and am ready to move on. Ill repost if i find a good spot. Was hoping someone has good locations they can post about to contribute to this thread. It is about where..not how 8)

From Switching out a mage for a shaman, or, how do I boost a lvl 63 shaman to 80?

68-71ish the Rhinos in BT. Easy to kill and quick respawns 5-6 in each pack pull 2 packs at a time. They are yellow so you will have to do a little work but still easy.
71-72 Iron Dwarfs in HF along the edge. There are about 20 of them, by the time you kill them all they refesh.
71-72 BT some frog looking things along the coast.
72-75 Northeast of Wintergarde, there's a large encampment of Onslaught mobs
that are purely melee. there are so many groups here that you can have
a field day with multiple pulls and respawns will occur when you go
    back to the beginning.
    74-75 Mustangs Grizzy hills
75-76 The entire Venture Corp Encampment on the northwest side of the
Suntouched Pillar is made of melee mobs. Plan out your pulls, and be
sure to stay a safe distance from the "boss" mobs. They're not elite,
but they have some nifty ablities that can throw off your pull by a lot.
77-80 Skeletal Runesmiths, Icecrown as soon as you can fly.

Last night I was extremely bored of questing and just wanted to kill things. I found this area (I think) and was amazed at the number of mobs. I would not try AoE grinding here with any less than three toons, but with my three druids I was able to take on between 15-20 mobs with starfall pulls. It was a hell of alot of fun. I think this area could actually work for Sam's massive totem strategy, though I doubt he ever gets to 77.

That's a semi-popular area for tankadins to grind as well. I know I did it some when I hit 77.

Well if you have a group of toons that have not completed these quests then you can use them to summon a bunch of mobs that you can endlessly grind for XP.

From 72+ you can do this quest in Dragonblight: http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=12261
You can use the Destructive Wards every 1 minute to summon a crystal that mobs spawn and run up to and attack (all melee mobs). The more crystals you have out the more mobs that spawn, although there is some limit it seems. Each person on the quest can have 2 crystals out, in a group of 3 with 2 on the quest, we grinded a level in just under 3 hours here (rested). Doesn't seem too fast but I bet in a full group of 5 with 10 crystals out it would go quick, especially if you're mobtagging to level just 1 char up. Probably faster than the Onslaught camps!

and from 77+ this quest in Icecrown: http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=13295
Just use the spinal fluid, kill the mobs, and fail the quest.

I tried doing that quest and each kill was only netting me about 60 xp on average at level 72. Did they nerf the exp for this quest or am I missing something?

That dragonblight quest got nerfed within a day. For that very reason.
