    Regarding the economy - well...
Here's my take on it: War. War is bad.

Why is War bad for the economy? Is it because people go overseas and get paid money by the government and don't spend their money at Starbucks? Not really.

Here's why it's bad: Energy waste.

1 soldier dead: Probably thousands of gigajoules put into this human in forms of food, education, transportation, etc. When this solder is dead, all the invested energy goes to waste.
1 missile fired: Probably similar to a human - not only does one invest a lot of direct energy to produce a missile with fuel and explosives and components - the energy involved in developing, designing and quality assuring the missile dwarfs its actual production investment.
A few hundred thousand soldiers, driving around in vehicles all day long: LOTS of energy.

You see.. when you wage war, you are actually using your saved up energy to blow shit up, and to kill people, who hold LOTS of abstract energy that is completely wasted when they die.
Your energy is spent on basically nothing. It's just dispersed as heat and nothing in the atmosphere.

Edit: The only good thing about war that I can see, are scientific spin-offs.

i too was laid off back in september(i work in banking). luckily, i had already started looking for a new job months before i was let go. on finding a new job though, stay away from monster.com and sites like that. all i got was a bunch of spam and endless calls from recruiters leading me nowhere. the best way to find a job in my opinion is to network. get to know people in your industry, build a good rapport and ask around. the decision makers are much more inclined to interview and hire people suggested to them by their collegues rather than the people recruiters shove in front of them. best of luck to ya

War, historically, is great for the economy.

A lot of the trouble with our current economy is that is is grossly inflated and propped up by a ton of individual debt. The US economy, the capitalist economy really, is like a big balloon. It swells for years and years, then pops. Then it starts over again. The real solution to this trend is live within your means (which will shrink the economy) and get rid of your debt (which makes the economy APPEAR to shrink).

OP, sorry about your job. I hope you score an even sweeter one real soon.
