Default [Heroic] Utgarde Pinnacle down, 4x shaman experiences

Today I hit 80.. and headed over to Utgarde in mostly S4 gear.. and went in with a Warrior in decent gear.
All in all.. not very hard considering my poor gear. Definitely a challenge. Requires a lot of focus, especially the healing. Make sure you use at least one Hex on the humanoids and the beasts to make these pulls safer.

    The bosses and my experience:

    Svala Sorrowgrave
Not hard. Just tank and spank, basically like normal but with bigger hits (you read something else?..).

    Gortok Palehoof
The hardest actual boss fight in the instance in my opinion. This is a DPS race against his stacking debuff.. By the time we were done, my shaman were at 5-6k hp and were almost one-shotted by his random damage. Extremely tight. Increasing your DPS will surely make this fight easier.
Tip: Make sure you heal the impaled character quickly.
    Wipes: 2

    Skadi the Ruthless
Pretty tough prelude fight - lots of opportunity for you to screw up and die. Park your box team by the harpoons and have the tank+boss down the corridoor, so that the whirlwind can be kited properly.
Tip: Be calm, take it easy, regen mana before you activate the boss.
    Wipes: 4

    King Ymiron
Not very hard, just requires you to focus a lot.. one mistake and it's downhill.
Tip: Put down healing stream totems after the first boat - chances are that you will be taking some team damage. It will also make your tank survive longer when you need to kite the "orb" that can easily kill you in seconds.
    Tip: Purge his buff immediately.

Has anyone run Pinnacle (regular or heroic) as a single person controlling tank/DPS? I got up to Skadi no problem, but the gauntlet is problematic -- I can get to the end usually, but its a lot of coordination trying to fire off harpoons, tank the new adds coming in, heal the tank and the team, and DPS the adds. I almost always end up pulling heal aggro, having a shaman die, and then the tank dies

If anyones done it and has any tips, would love to hear them. One trick is to just run the gauntlet and loot a bunch of harpoons, then run all the way back out to the start -- the boss resets and you keep the harpoons. Still, doesn't help much with the actual mechanics at the end of the hall.

I've beaten Skadi once, but I'm basically having the same problems as you. What you can do is bunch up in a corridor in the room at the end for the passage (where the mobs spawn) and then when you've beaten down the two mobs spawing, run out with the tank and fire some harpoons. This poses two problems however. First of all, there's the hell that is getting down there. I've only managed to do this three times. Secondly, if you use this tactic, you'll need to tank Skadi inside the room, leaving very little room for error when he whirlwinds.

There's a bug you can use (I tried it, it works fine but I want to beat the encounter in the normal way since it feels sort of like exploiting), where you start the fight, then run back into the room before Skadi. The encounter resets and you have 30 secs to run down to the end before Skadi respawns. You park your party down there, including the tank, and use a dps char to run down and restart the encounter. You then AE tank the whole bunch (it's very doable) and proceed from there.

I did UP (non-heroic) on the weekend with my team for the elder achievement in there, and yes Skadi was a real learning curve.

    My team:

    • Prot pally - 25K HP, 510 defense (I know I am under the cap, working on it)
    • Moonkin - 1900 spell damage (all Naxx 25 man gear, he's my raiding main although I play resto in raids, I was respecced for the weekend)
    • 3 x Elemental shammys - 1300 spell damage each
I didn't use the reset trick, and wiped 3 times before I got it got him down. The only real issue I had was with the 3 ranged at the end of the hall, because if I parked up there to deal with them it was too hard to see where the aoe frost was going to land. So, I would park the team half way, run up and grab everyone then train them back down until they were aound my team, run the tank back into their mix, dropped 3 x magma totems and healing streams, and basically killed them as fast as I could.

Once that was done I parked my team 30 yards away from the harpoons, gathered up any new spawns, and when prompted used the harpoons on each thrower. He dropped, and it was a tank and spank, using the new pally single taunt once whirlwind starts.

Note that I had the druid healing since I didn't really have the macros setup to get the most out of the moonkin dps and he had the biggest mana pool.

I'll try it on heroic once I get the team better geared.

I've farmed this instance about 10 times on normal to get 5x shields from last boss for 5 shammies immediately after I hit 80. It is not hard, Skaldi is a bit tricky though. Just chain heal through WW and do it FAST.

I farmed that place every day until I pretty much quit boxing. Got 2 mounts out of there, biggest secret was key bounding strafe to my mouse wheel =P (it moves left and right).
My way to beat the gauntlet(and Im sure other peoples too), was to start the event, slowly collect 6 harpoons, reset the event, run to the ads spawn point, use a shaman to start the event, tank all the ads and kill, get all 6 harpoons in one go.
