Wireless keyboards are commonly used for this application, buy two of the same model, you can sync one keyboard to more than one receiver. Traditionally you need more than one keyboard connected to each machine for this type of setup to work... see below for why.
I have tried this on two logitech devices, one BT and one proprietary radio and neither would transmit to both at the same time. Please don't trash my suggestions because you have a different opinion or experience, it's rude.

I'm interested to see some references where you have seen this 'commonly used' as i have a situation where it would be very useful.
