Uh wtf, I ran around him an up stairs and there was DEFINITELY a web there. Maybe it only goes up when you aggro him and doesnt come down until hes dead or instance reset? If thats the case then ya, don't aggro him or its instance game over.
The stairs isn't the way to the next bit. That part is always sealed off.
