When you completely ignore previous information posted on the thread, particularly the post directly above yours, you might be a WOW Forums poster yourself. Enjoy your high road, it must be quite busy up there given my experience with the general WOW community.
Nevertheless, I had no problem doing it recently or months ago.
They had intended to change their stance - to make it such that bonus exp was not awarded in the event of the mob being trivial, but it never happened - and was always worded such that it was irrelevant as to whether it was linked or not.

Down a bit:
However, it is intended that the lower level characters should be getting triple experience if certain conditions apply. For example, the following group makeup:
Level 70 on account 1
who referred
Level 35 on account 2
who referred
Level 35 on account 3
Provided level 35 mobs are killed by this group, both level 35 characters should receive triple experience*. This is because account 3 is linked to account 2; should only account 1 and account 2 group up, no triple experience would be given. In a matter of speaking the second link will override the first link for account 2, who then becomes eligible for the bonus.
* There is currently a known issue with this, but this is the intended functionality.
