Default For those of us who don't have an uber-geared 70 pally tank...

I for one don't have an uber-geared 70 protection pally.

If I wanted to continue to build RFA teams and I were to gift him levels to get him to 60 and then quest him to 70, would I be able to craft him gear through Black Smithing that would allow him to boost RFA groups through the old instances?

Obviously with the expansion coming out, everyone is going to be focused on getting to 80 which should leave a lot of the old areas empty. For me this is the perfect time as I'm alliance on a PVP server that is 3 to 1 horde to ally.

    Thoughts please.

IMHO Its easier to gear a feral druid via quest rewards / leatherworking BoEs. Probably even cheaper than plate. But if you're already set on a pally tank, the Felsteel set I believe is a tanking set thats BoE, you're still probably going to need some more craftables / quest gear / maybe even some Dungeon 3 to do the higher level instances (60+). But boosting a team through the old world shouldn't be that big of a gear issue.

can't even imagine. just assumed alliance out numbered horde everywhere as much as they always did on my servers.

Having never boosted a toon, why would you need to hit the defense cap for this?

Isn't the defense cap based on level 73 mobs?

    defense is for crit mitigation.
    armor is for damage reduction.

just load up on armor since no mob will be able to land a critting blow on you... unless, well... you meet a hordie.

if you want your pally to boost your alts in lower instances, that's probably all you're after. buy a bunch of level 69-70 gear. do some of the world group quests or take him through some instances. check the database site of your choice for instance drops, quest rewards, etc.

consider pvp gear as well. plus the starter pvp sets when you hit honored with some select factions (CE, HH, Shatar, Lower City, Keepers of Time).
tanking ring from final boss' chest in Ramps, tanking ring from Epoc Hunter in Old Hillsbrad, Cloak of Valliant Defender, Ogre slayer band, crafted Necklace of the deep... these all come to mind and are pretty easy to get. rest of the gear you'll have to figure out. hehe. but you can boost lower level folks up with those gear, plus some blue crafted gear from the AH. not too hard. those items are entry level 70 instances, heroics, and kara gear anyway.

The only boosting gear you need on a paladin is the spore shield (from sporeggar) and a felsteel spike.

You can do 3 pull cath easily with the above and s1 honor gear with +3healing (at the time) gems - I'm sure you could do it in greens.

Figurine of the collossus is also incredibly good if you can get it.

edit: Dabiri's Enigma is also really good for forcing procs.

I keep preaching Tankspot, no one seems to listen :P

    http://www.tankspot.com/forums/f97/3...gear-list.html

This is an excellent list of gear options for new tanks, I've followed it myself and within in about a week went from 100 Defense to 480. (though admittedly a couple of the items I got were from my first Kara run) Still, you can do a lot running quests, and if you plan it as you level you'll end up with all the stuff as you hit 70. As stated above, Sporegar Shield and Felsteel Shield Spike, that coupled with Ret Aura and liberal uses of consecrate, etc. And you should see mobs dying really quick and easy.

There is a big difference between "Tanking Gear" and "Boosting Gear". When you tank you want high mitigation - block - dodge - parry - miss (defense provides all of these BTW), then high stamina, high armor, then spell power- basically. We could get into more details and discuss this forever, but this is basicall correct.

When boosting you want High armor, high stamina, high spell power. The mobs will not crit you nekkid. The higher your armor, the lower their damage when they do hit you. High stamina allows you to collect crazy amounts of mobs by running around (you loose the most health with your back turned because you can't dodge, block or parry). And you want high spell power to 1. kill mobs faster and 2. heal yourself for more if you have to. With ret aura up you want mobs to hit you, it kills them faster. With the cange to BoS (which I love) if you have enough mobs you will never run out of mana, even with the downranking nerf. You can still cast rank 1 consecrate to gather mobs, they will give you your mana back and then some.

The best gear for this is the PvP S2 honor gear. Very high armor and stamina and good spell power. The Seasonal gear is also easy to pick up, in season. The brewfest trinkets were nice and the rings from HH are very good if you are a fresh 70 (or will be soon). I personally heal in BGs as prot spec and have been effective since my mid 60s in AV. I mostly am too cheap to respec very often. If you would rather kill stuff, spec Ret. But when you get your gear keep boosting in mind. Honor rolls in very fast now and each peice makes it easier.

If you are going to take the pally to 80 - or even 71+. You will probably get better gear in Northrend, or maybe in the AH from Northrend. Something else to think about.

To boost before the new content comes out, just get "of the sorcerer" gear for some AOE spell damage, load up the rest on "of the champion" gear or "of the whale" gear to get lots and lots of life.

You may have to heal with the toons you are boosting if you overpull, but at least you'll be boosting them.

You don't need high armor for boosting. The tooltip is your mitigation against equal level mob. Mitigation is based on attacker's level.
