Fraps/Virtual dub & vista 64

So I went out and spent the $40 or whatever for fraps pretty cool recording all kinds of stuff in game. But the problem is the files that I am recording are like 1gig. A little trolling on the fraps site said you need to convert them into another format they suggest virtual dub. I guess I am having a problem installing the correct codec and then figureing out what settings to make the films look good. Any hints/help would be appreciated.

depends on what youre using the vids for, but if youre just putting them to youtube or something they say to use "MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 320x240 resolution with MP3 audio". i usually just use mpeg2 to make them smaller when theyre just for myself but i think thats mainly because its like the first selection on my video software. ive not used virtual dub though so i cant assist with that aspect.

yeah by default they are huge, been a while since i last. reduce the FPS and size in the options.

How do you down convert them dub? What program do you use?

i use sony vegas 6.0 got it for christmas with a camcorder a couple years back. its pretty nice except i think theyre up to 9.0 by now or something like that.

If you don't care about editing and just want to encode to a tiny .wmv file (which can be shared easily, uploaded to utube, etc) you can use windows movie maker. It's probably already on your computer, if not, its a free download from MS. You can edit with it as well ofcourse, its pretty easy to use though I have no idea how it stacks up to other offerings as I don't do much video editing but for what you need (compressing video) its perfectly fine

The goal right now is to get these ~1gig fight files all converted to something that gamevee will allow me to upload. This might be a pipe dream but I would like them to be nice quality but not super huge. I plan on taking this incrementally

1) record the fights (woot done)

2) Down convert them to something a video sharing site will take. Then Share them

3) Make an epic video full of star wipes and cheesy music.

Right now I am stuck on #2. I get tells in game almost every day people wanting to see what I am doing. Sure I can point them to other people's videos but I want to show off my own stuff.

I almost got window's movie maker a couple nights ago. I couldn't find a direct link to download. I started downloading patches and all this other microsoft stuff so I gave up on that and tried something different. I will try more of this tonight and see if I can get it up and running.

Would the vanilla $50 version of sony vegas be enough for simple editing/music overlay (and of course star wipes)?

If you're running windows you should have Windows Movie Maker O.o

yeah the 50$ vegas 9 is the new equivalent to what i use though i dont want you to buy it before trying any free item you can find such as windows movie maker. i agree the microsoft update business is pretty bogus but once you get through it its a pretty ok program. i also had to download it to my parents computer for some reason it wasnt on there either (my mom wanted something to edit her home movies).

Well got windows movie maker to downconvert a file. It took the orginal file ~1gig and made it ~51mb. I was hoping for something a little bigger with better quality. But all in all I don't think it is that bad

On another note. Is it always a slow slow process to upload videos to video sharing sites. I think the 50mb took ~20mins.
