Default New processor, having some troubles. HALP!

Hey i just got my new amd phenom x4 9950 black edition am2+ in the mail today. im upgrading from a amd x2 4200+.

I build all my computers, but this is the first time ive ever upgraded a processor, usualy by that time ill buy a completely new system. anyway im running a 750watt power supply with an asus m2n-sli delux mobo (am2), geforce 8800 gtx.

after i popped the processor in along with a copy of xp my signal to monitor disapeared, and i have no friggin clue why. ive tried reconnecting everything, but all i would need is power/dvi connection anyway. i cant seem to get any picture on any monitor. At first i thought i disconected something, but its been checked and tripple checked.

i came up with some possiblities, but havent come to any concusions just yet, the processor wasnt getting enough juice, mobo/processor arent compatable. those are just some ideas but i cant seem to figure out how to fix it. ive never heard of a doa processor and ill be damned if im the first one.

in short no signal input. plz help thanks

Do you see a post screen (the screen just before the system boots?) Do you get picture at all or is it just blank with no signal?

here's the deal: if you hear no beeps, and there is no monitor signal, there is a very good chance that your cpu doesn't start up.

This can be for any number of reasons, ofc it can be a DOA, but also, it could be lack of power (unlikely, with a 750w psu) or - your mainboard doesn't support it, with the current firmware/bios

How to progress, if it were me: resocket the old cpu, reconnect stuff and see if you can boot up. If so, go online, find your mainboard and download the latest bios/firmware. Then upgrade it, and check that it works. Also read the releasenotes, to see if anything is mentioned regarding your new cpu.

Next, resocket the new cpu, and power up.

If it still doesn't work, try disconnecting all peripherals, like harddrive, cdromdrive, cardreaders and what have you. All you need connected, is mainboard, graphicsadapter, ram, cpu and frontpanel (to be able to click the power button ). Any other pci-e or whatever cards like soundcard, yank it out. If it still doesn't start, you should contact your retailer, and ask for a new cpu.

    Good luck

The 9950 is an AM2+ socket, an AM2+ mainboard can definitely handle an AM2 chip, but I don't know if the opposite is true... According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_AM2%2B it should be fine...

I'd definitely pop the old chip back in and see if it still posts, if so, I'd update bios and all, one poster above says that you've done all this but I don't see that stated anywhere... so I'm blind, or something. Still doesn't work after verifying the MB is compatible, then you have a DOA chip.

Have the exact same motherboard and it should be able to work with a Phenom if you have the right BIOS, upgrade to 1502 or whatever the newest one is atm. The 9950 however might have a too high TDP for it to handle though.

EDIT: Can't seem too find the any BIOS' for the M2N-SLI Deluxe board anywhere on Asus anymore.

ok i went to the amd forums and found this mobo is not compatable with the 140w 9950. bought a new mobo for it (been looking for an excuse to upgrade my comp anyway). am2 is compatable with am2+ but this mobo wont support the 9950's. thanks for the help.
