I unbound the keys on my paladin and just click the buttons.

I don't really do anything fancier than the macros do.

In fact it might result in my holy shield being active more of the time.

As far as righteous defense goes - I believe if you have a mob targetted it will taunt that mob and a couple of others who have the same target to come to you. If you target a player it should taunt a few of the mobs on that target to come to you.
