Default Possible to connect via not same network?

I am trying to hook up Octopus with two computers, but I have them on different networks so I can't just enter the comp name and have it connect to that I don't think. I tried entering the IP, but that doesnt seem to work either. Is there any way I can do this, or do they need to be on the same lan?

Dunno. I'd suspect it would work fine with the correct firewall configurations on both ends.

You will have to configure the server to connect to as the Internet IP adress of the Server's router. Then you will have to configure port forwarding of the Octopus ports (7612 by default) from the router to the server's internal network IP adress. Be sure to configure the ports for Octopus in your firewall as well. After doing all that it should work. I'm not sure how octopus transmits its data but it could be possible that you are opening your account info to being transmitted plain text across the internet. If you use the blizzard authenticator's then it may not be an issue for you. With all that said I wouldn't personally do it because I'm ultra paranoid.
