Must be something strange about your setup - I do the same as Caspian (just drag the mount to the same shortcut button on all characters) and have no problem.

You would be better off using a macros that checks your current condition (nomounted, etc). One thing I found out to be very irratating is that if one unmounted to say gather a herb I couldn't just hit the mount button because then the other would unmount.

I have a very complicated one I use for my Druid mounts/forms but the easy version of this below should work for you.

/use [nomounted, outdoors] Horn of the Dire Wolf

If you want a macros to unmount you could do

/cancelform (or cancelaura can't remember but think that is for 'forms').

Once you get a flying mount there will be another addition you would need to add noflyable for the land mount and flyable for the flying mount (i think).

Win. No modifiers required. Only problem is if you want land mount in outlands, then you have to put a modifier in... but who would want to

Me! I don't have epic flyers on all my teams, but I do have epic land mounts that I use for point-to-point travel. That's why I use separate keys

Just another 20k gold to go.... *sob*....

There is a definite advantage to using land mounts in places like Ogri'la where flying is hazardous, and also for rounding up mobs to AoE.
