Windows XP (32-bit) vs. Windows Vista (64-bit)

**I searched before posting to make sure there were no similar posts ~ Please let me know if there are or if this should be posted in Software Tools**

I have been experiencing some performance issues while running Vista 64bit and 5 boxing. I have bumped my memory up to 4 gigs and have even messed with overclocking my processor/gpu and messing with my memory timings. None of the aforementioned seems to have any effect on my performance. My framerates are still in the low 30's and the video lagging as well as keyclone lagging still persists.

I have ran the gamut as far as hardware troubleshooting and I am going to install Windows XP 32bit and run the same tests. It is 32bit so all of my Ram will not be able to be addressed, but hopefully I will see some glimmer of hope. )

I will post my findings when I have run some tests or see some noticeable performance increases. Specs are below.



Intel C2Duo E6400
2gig DDR1066 - 2gig DDR667 (all ram is running @667)
Geforce 8800GTS 320mb
Integrated Realtek sound
2 - 19' LCD Flat Panels

i would definitely be interested in your results.

one thing to try... try using only 1 monitor .. see if that helps (i have read that vista and dual monitors can have issues)

I have heard that two about the dual heads and such. For some reason I think it is the 64bit OS running 32bit apps or the processor running the 64bit OS.

Not too sure, but more to come.

also, does ne1 else have issues when Blizzard releases new patches? I get an error when I try to log in via my other directories of WOW. I don't have the exact message, but I get a message and it won't let me load the patch. That forces me to reduplicate ALL four WOW directories. ops:

On a side not, Keyclone!

If I have 2 OS's (dual boot), do I have to buy another license for KeyClone? If so, then I have to buy a few more copies. In other words your going to be making a small fortune off of me.

So my findings are a bit different from what I was suspecting. ops:

I was dual booting XP 32bit and Vista 64bit and did notice some performance differences favoring Windows XP, but they were minimal. The differences were probably due to OS efficiency with XP being the more mature of the two technologically.

After becoming VERY frustrated with my findings I decided it was time for a reformat and reinstalled Vista 64bit. While doing this I also overclocked the Core2Duo E6400 from 2.13ghz to 3.104ghz with an FSB of 1552Mhz. Then I installed WOW and BC then made the other four directories of WOW that were needed and began playing as usual.

BINGO!!!!!!!!

In all of my questioning and investigating I had forgotten how stinking CPU intensive WOW really is. :roll: Not sure why I forgot this??? But now I am running all five instances with an average CPU load of 70% instead of 90% with my CPU temp hovering around 40c at full load. SWEEEET MEAT!!! My memory is still about 91% allocated but it could be much worse. I am going to mess with some voltages and see if I can get my CPU up into 3.3 to 3.5ghz ranges and see how it handles the pressure. :twisted:

Long story short, my CPU was the bottleneck. Not my memory or my video card. My next upgrade will be 2gig's more of my awesome Crucial DDR1066 and maybe some SLI lovin down the road.

Interesting. Nice information to know. I'm actually going to un-install Vista (32-bit) this weekend and reload my XP Pro. Primary reason is that Vista/Microsoft have yet to fix an issue with Vista running WOW in windowed mode with Nvidia GPU's running in SLI. (Info from Nvidia)

I have a Core2Duo E6600 on a 680i Mobo which atm is not overclocked. I'm buying a new heatsink/fan tonight so I can experiemnt with OCing as well. Atm my CPU is running in the high 50's under load so I'm a little concerned with a heat issue.

I have a 680i board as well, I went with the EVGA 775 A1 and have no regrets. The heatsink/fan combo I went with was a Zalman 9700 . . i think. It's freaking HUGE but it cools the shizz outta my CPU. Before OC my temps were 30c, then after OC and a 1ghz bump up in frequency it's stable under load at around 43c.

Again, sweet mobo with a sweet cpu and heatsink/fan and I am in heaven. You might want to look up some articles about the E6600, I have heard it is not such a good overclocker.

I went the two video card route with my setup. The CPU's are the stumbling block. I will need to upgrde to 4 Core CPU in a few months time but until then my current setup is still ok.
