The day after Thanksgiving, traditionally the #1 shopping day of the year in the states. It was named Black Friday because that is the day that many retailers finally made it "into the black." Which is an accounting term for assets > liabilities, or profit.
Thanksgiving being the fourth Thursday of November, the 27th this year.
