    Default Anyone have luck 5 boxing on one PC with a 2560 x 1600 monitor AND a 1920 x 1200 second monitor

I have a single Dell 1920 x 1200 monitor now and my wife gave me permission to get one of those sweet Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC 30-inch 2560 x 1600 monitors + a new video card. (And yes for those of you who aren't married....it's polite to beg permission before dropping $1700 on a monitor + video card.)

Ideally I'd like to put all the slaves on the smaller monitor and save the 30" for my main toon. Anyone have any clue what the minimum NVidia card I should get that would support this level of pixel output?

This is all on 1 pc, quad core, 8GB, 64 Bit Vista, 2 SATA drives.

    Thanks in advance!

I have been able to do 5 box on one machine, 4 of them have only 2 addons and are at 800x600 and have everything i can turn off turned off. I'm not even on a superpowerful system either and it all works. my lag really isn't that bad either. so it is possible to 5 box on one machine.

If all you play is WoW, then you'd probably be fine with a pair of Nvidia GTX 260 cards (non-SLI mode, one per monitor) or AMD/ATI 4850/4870 cards (same setup). All these cards are good performance for the price range.

If you play more demanding graphical games, you may want to consider Nvidia GTX 280 cards or wait a bit for the AMD/ATI 4870x2.

I've kicked around this idea, but if I ever come around to picking up that 30", I'm definitely keeping my main on my 1920x1200 24" and putting the 4 alts on the 30". The alt windows are already small at 960x600 each, and 1920x1200 is plenty for a main, so it just makes more sense to me to have the alts at 1280x800.. that's a ton of space, and navigating those alt windows quickly would be easier at this resolution than anything smaller.

Definitely going to 4-box Diablo 3 after testing the beta for how well this would work.

There is just no way I could consider using the smaller monitor for my main, logical or not :-) There is no such thing as too much horizontal or vertical space on my main toon!

It sounds like you are suggesting I get two video cards and run one monitor on each, rather than some SLI setup with the monitors plugged into the same card. Yes/No

I've only ever had two monitors plugged into the same video card and I guess I assumed it would be the same in this case as well (SLI or not).

Could you please elaborate a tiny bit more on this subject?

    Thanks!

I have almost the identical computer specs as you. I use a single 8800GT dual-DVI video card.

    It runs 5 copies at 40fps and 30fps x 4 just fine.

you don't need SLI if all you are doing is playing WoW, its pretty much a waste. I run a c2duo 2.4ghz with a 8800GT hooked up to a 47" LCD and two 21" LCDs (flipped sideways) and it runs 5 copies of WoW fine. Your 8gb, vista, quad-core PC will run it even better! My 3d monitor is hooked up to my onboard VGA controller with 8mb of memory (LOL!) and I don't notice anything different about it. WoW is not a graphics-card intensive game, CPU, computer memory and hard drives are the gating factors for WoW.

I'd suggest either a cheap 8800GT now and upgrade to a new top of the line video card in a few weeks, or go ahead and buy a nice top of the line NVidia or ATI (260/280 or 4850-4870? not sure about model numbers). The former will net you probably 20fps main and 10fps alts, and the latter will give you 40fps main and 20-30fps alts.

And yeah WoW on a main screen giant LCD is awesome. I run mine windowed mode at 1600x1200 and its fabulous. I rarely even look at the alt windows, they are just there in case I need to loot or rez.

I "borrowed" my 30" dell from work last time I took a week of vacation off, and although it's nice to have a lot of space on the main, having windows larger than 960x600 for the alts makes managing loot SO much easier. At first, I hooked up the 30" to use as my main, but decided to test it out for the alts, and 1920x1200 for the main with 1280x800 for alts was the perfect "sweet spot" for me. I spend a lot of time handling inventory on the alts, so having a lot of space to look at 7x 18 slot bags in the bank with 4x 18 slot bags on the toon without it being too small is important. At 960x600 (24" display / 4), it's just not big enough.

Thanks for responding, I didn't think about tiling them in that mode.....hhhmmmmm.. Maybe I should consider the bigger monitor for the alts.
