So, my question is, why roll on a PvP server? What is the appeal? Do the benefits out way the hassles?
I rolled on a PvP server because
    a) Suvega was already on one
    b) I was into PvP from my Guild Wars days
    c) It adds a bit of excitement into your everyday grind

That being said, now that I'm more well known, people stay far away from my alts. They know if they do anything more than a drive-by gank on my lowbies, they'll have 5 shammies raining hell down upon them.

Usually once I hit 60 or so I got less fearful. As shammies, I dropped my first 70 in my mid-50's, and my warlocks did it in their 40's. With help from city guards in darkshire, my level 30 hunters didn't do too badly at dpsing a 70 rogue, but died after he entered melee range. You have to have this sort of passive-aggressive attitude -- gankers typically pick at the low-hanging fruit. If you act like you're scared, they'll go after you. If you act defensive the moment you see them, they might think twice.

Normally, if I saw any higher level, I'd target them on all the shammies, lay a totem farm, and watch them until they left. They usually don't attack you head-on -- only when you're busy fighting other mobs.

Anyway, that air of excitement and the danger of always having to look over your shoulder is fun. I think it adds to the whole horde vs alliance atmosphere -- you'll get times when you just REALLY hate the other faction because one of "their kind" ganked you. I don't actually gank myself, but I will use the PvP server to my benefit. It's great to be able to defend "my territory" if I'm camping a spawn, or come to someone's rescue when they're being ganked, or to chase down a known ganker to teach them what it feels like.

There's a certain sense of achievement about reaching 70 on a PvP server as well, especially if you've been through your server's "gank area" -- which is usually places like STV, hellfire, southshore/tarren mill, etc. You feel like you've been forged by fire. It gives you some practice for PvP ahead, since you know how to hide when a 70 is in the area and how guard aggro works.

PVP sever is a whole different look and feel. You can be attacked at all times , you have no friends they are red , you are red. Kill or be killed.

I do not gank but I will camp a ganker.

Once you have your gold and gear(like that happens to end) then you can take more time to play the game.

Rest of game (gear, gold, rep, etc) is a grind .

PVP for me this the fun part of the game

I have toons on each server

I have to say RP pvp is just real fun

Not to derail this thread, but, I've read lots of posts about people with gank stories and having to go out of their way to level all because it's a PvP server. So, my question is, why roll on a PvP server? What is the appeal? Do the benefits out way the hassles?

I've never rolled on a PvP for the simple fact of these types of hassles. It would just piss me off too much.
Your last sentence there is pretty much the reason I've always enjoyed being on my pvp server. On a pve server if someone is bothering you (farming an area you need for a quest, tagging your mobs, or otherwise harassing you) you have no recourse. You just have to sit there and take it or move on. This annoyed me to no end in other games I've played where pvp wasn't an option.

    Stv = Nagrand, yes.

Vyndree says it best though in that having to pay attention to your surroundings really becomes important and alos i have met some great folks due to /1 General annoucements of a gank or the banter that goes with it. I am a solo hunter more often than MB, and if i see /1 General change from background text to OMG WTF!! HELP ME!!! then I start to get a bit of adrenalin and fun factor.

Good Luck in finishing quests, if you are smarter than the gankers - you will be fine, b ut sometimes it is just easier to defend yourself as best you can and then after you are running back to your corpse notice what worked. Rinse and repeat.

I guess it comes down to the fact that Ive ALWAYS played a Paladin as my main in just about every game since my D&D days as a 10 year old. And well, Paladins and PvP..../wrist

(DISCLAIMER: the fact that I used D&D and /wrist together in the same sentence by no means implies I'm emo, have long hair, or think black is the new khaki. I love life and people and some cute animals are ok)

EDIT: (DISCLAIMER TO DISCLAIMER: There is nothing wrong with emo kids, long hair or the color black and I apologize for those I may have offened. However, any so-called "cute" animals - i.e cats - I may have offended can STFU)

I rolled on Mag because there were so many other boxers there to interact with. I already have 70's on Lothar where I can raid if I want.

I do enjoy the pvp rush, its just that I'm just reaching the point where I can start to put up a fight but against a PvP-epiced mage your going to get wasted at L56. That's life.

lol...I like cute animals, too. Preferably on shish-kebabs or grilled, though I've been known to enjoy sausage from them at times.

[edit] Yes, Nagrand is much like STV. Honestly, though, the gank groups on mag aren't all THAT prevalent. Some servers are worse than others, and your gank rate is usually directly proportional to how badly the other faction just got stomped in Halaa or whether you're farming motes or some other resource.

Whats nice about rolling alt toons is you can log in your main group and make them pay for killing you. I had some 70's and 60's kill my 64's so I logged in the mains and killed them. Its a very nice feeling.

Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”

This weekend I decided to unleash my mains. So tired of the SM Cath grind I decided to head to STV. After saying STV you know what comes next lol. So there I was at nemmy camp not a soul in sight, in fact I havent seen dick all the way up to 40 as far as people to kill, just a rare few here and there.

Distracted clicking on the quest giver a 70 enhancement shaman 1 shots my pally and proceeds to finish off the lot of my 5 boxing party. No big deal, I come back and the guy had the alldasity to place a camp fire down and sit on my corpses.

Apparently this guy didnt get the memo on why you should never camp multi-boxers. So my mains were far away. Came from hellfire, flew to shat, took the portal, waiting on the Zep then rode all the way up there, he was still there 15mins later lol. So I roll up do /wave x5. He stands up and looks around and then does /cry. I do /nod and proceed to kill him. Only wish I had a camp fire.

Turns out he pissed off a bunch of peoples alts because shortly after 4 more 70s show up asking me if I just killed that shaman and what his name was. They logged on to their mains to kill him as well. They complemented me on my mains, I then asked if they would stand guard for a bit for my alts, they said sure. I logged back on my alts and finished my quests while he was camped lol.

The thing that annoys me most however still is rogues. At 40 I decided to try out Gadgetzan, a 70 rogue continued to kill my guys. I could at least do damage to him, I feel that my alts could kill him if it wasnt for cloak of skill.

No matter where my alts went he followed. I finally got annoyed enough to bring my mains, of course he hides then, they all do. Worst of all it was a gnome, I hate gnomes! I bet he must have been the alt of the gnome mage I chased half way across the zone to kill.

Yep, this is why I'm leveling a druid group. Stealth + trees + heals = WIN. There was a druid on Mag that would log in a level 1 alt and find zerglings and camp us with his 70. Was pretty funny because as soon as we logged on our mains, he would see it and go hide.
