The new guy with the question

Hey guys.
I just registered and already have a question :)

I'm an ex-EverQuest addict. Just recently joined WoW horde after about 5 years of EQ. I really got used to 2-3 boxing in EQ so after a couple of weeks of running a Rogue here in Warcraft I decided that it's time to create a new account and go back to dual boixing. I don't think I'll be creating with 4-5 characters as some people do but having two characters is a blast so far.

I ran into the problem when it came to choosing perfect characters to bot. As I said, I'm a new WoW player ( my characters are only lvl 9) so I went with the simple tank/healer combo - Warrior/Priest. After reading these forums it's seems like I'm the only one with such a combo. Everyone here seems to be using either Shamans, Mages or Warlocks. I there something wrong with War/Priest combo ?

I know in EverQuest having Warrior/Cleric wasn't such a good idea because warriors are low DPS and neither cleric or warrior can slow NPCs. In EQ I found the best combo to be Bard/Druid.
A far as I know, in WoW Warriors are very high on DPS... so as priests so I figured this combo will work pretty well. Paladins are good tanks as well from what I heard ( plus CC ) but their DPS isn't too good....

So back to my question.. is there something wrong with Warrior/Priest combo ? It's awesome so far...while low levels.

If this is your first time through the game, that combo is fine. Go shadow spec on your prist for extra DPS. You won't need a dedicated healer for leveling. Also, there is a "new to multiboxing" forum. You'll realize soon why you should start there :D

oh fyi, Priests can't wear plate ;)

Just as a warning you should be posting this in the New Multiboxers forum so you are going to get flamed...

Having said that many people find once they get to higher levels that having clothies isn't optimal for 5-boxing because you can't take much damage. Shaman are pretty popular because they are wearing mail and many of their abilities are stackable with each other. I would strongly suggest using a Paladin for your tank instead of a Warrior for your group.

Paladins can AoE tank a group of mobs like no other class, and require less attention to do so than a warrior or druid. About the only downside is the lack of a ranged attack until level 50 unless you have the engineering profession. A mage has fantastic single target & AoE DPS, portals for quick transport to cities, food/water to reduce downtime, and the best CC in the game. There's a reason that the paladin/mage combo is my favorite pair, even though the rogue is probably my favorite single class. AoE, low downtime, and portals makes this one of the most 'active' pairs due to the ability to clear out a large area of mobs and not waste so much time in travel.

I saw that too, but as a long time EQ gamer myself back in the day, dual-boxing was often refered to as botting. Whether there was automation software or not. A cleric was often called a healbot if he was being dual-boxed.

To the OP: botting means much more evil things in WoW than in EQ.

Come to think about it, maybe that's where all the "zomg multi-boxers are bots" come from...hmmm..

Yes, warriors can only wear cloth, so i say don't use the warrior. Go holly on priest and holly on the pally, they can heal each other and both wear plate. BUT a warlock's pet imp can wear dragon hide which we all know is way better then plate.

Aha!

I ran 3 EQ toons back in the day and it was great fun, but completely spoiled me on single boxing....forever. I actually made the switch back when WoW came out, but it is a VERY different game. Some of the biggest adjustments for me were:

1. Speed of combat -- At first, WoW feels like fighting while mashing on fast-forward button on your TiVo. The good news is that anything non-elite is easy pickings, so you get a lot of time to adjust your reaction time and get used to the combat system.

2. Questing is King -- Especially after some recent modifications, efficient questing is the best way level, or even to powerlevel (though it's debatable). They also teach you game concepts and the lore is mildly interesting, too, so I'd highly recommend using quests as your primary path of progression. In other words, don't feel guilty if you don't "grind" very often =)

3. Pre-70, money is made primarily through professions -- I'd recommend at least one gathering profession, and perhaps two, on your main toon. Crafting materials sell well on most servers and it's the most reliable way to keep the cash flowing. Once you hit 70 you can switch to daily quests, which are boring but give nice rewards (cash and goodies), especially with multiple toons

4. Boxing is different -- When I played EQ, there were a ton of things I could do with 2-3 toons that I had no shot of doing solo. Warcraft was designed to be easily solo-able all the way to 70. And 2 or even 3-boxing may not enable you to complete dungeons at the appropriate level. Again, some recent changes essentially eliminated the need for grouping outside of instances, so the main thing 2-boxing gets you is flexibility to choose characters or run instances with fewer than 5 people.

Fur is right, you need to pick a goal for your toon(s) and that will largely guide your choices. WoW seems to have several equally "fun" paths (instancing, PvP, raiding) to choose from and, unlike EQ, you can always re-spec or re-gear if you want to change paths.

Oh...and you don't lose xp for dying =)

If you decide to stick to 2-boxing, some combos I'd recommend for general leveling and exploring the game are:
- Hunter/Priest - Pet tank, heals, buffs, decent dps
- Paladin/Warlock - unkillable, but if you do wipe, you can just soulstone/res
- Rogue/Druid - nice dps and good for stealth boss runs
- Mage/Mage - KABOOM

Great point. If you want to primarily level through AoE (which is a fun technique) then Pally/Mage is terrific. Pally/Priest can also work, though Holy Nova requires a ton of mana, so you'd need to rely on high Int gear.

The other benefit of a Paladin in the mix is you'll have a built-in booster if you want to roll more alts.

For you non EQ guys:

Priests in EQ (Clerics) wear plate.

Boxing in EQ is also referred to by the terminology: botting (this does not mean what it does in WoW).

For the OP, there is no Shaman slow thing in WoW, and enchanters are people that do a particular tradeskill, not mez stuff :(

Suggestions

It depends a lot on the pet and how your spec and gear evolves. A high dps pet or a boar (using charge) can hold aggro reasonably well. The key is allowing the pet to land a Growl before unleashing your firepower. Truthfully, most stuff will die quickly enough that you shouldn't have much to worry about. I would recommend a Boar for their charge ability up until level 35 or so, at which point you can trade it in for a cat with dash. Also, I've had good luck using wands while leveling my pair. Grab the +dmg talent and it becomes a nice dps boost even on short fights.
