Stopping Mage AOE spamming...

The Horsemen just hit 70 this weekend, so I started the AV Grind. Even with a mess of greens and blues/cloth to mail my shamans mow through tons and tons of ppl, I love it. One problem I have been having, and this doesn't happen very often, is a mage running in and aoe bombing my guys. Sure I eventually kill him, but not before he takes a good 5-6k away from my guys, and the mage is usually not alone. I'm just wondering what any others do on their quad boxing shamans to stop this once they are in aoeing. My shock macro has one shaman doing earth shock, one doing frost, and two doing flame and I hit that of course to atleast get a little breakup. If I see them coming they are done, my problem is usually when I'm taking down 3 others and they sneak in. I was already thinking about LW on all 4 guys for round robin drums of panic, but atm I would rather work on my S2 gear rather than farming gold to raise the skill up. I might just have to break down and at the very least get Drums of Panic on one guy. Any other ideas are greatly appreciated. BTW, I absolutely love this now that I'm 70!!

I don't know but I would love to see the outcome of 4-5 shamans vs 4-5mages spamming blastwave/ae

Damn, hats off to you, you did that 58-70 grind fast, damn lol, would a ns+em+cl kill him fast enough?

Drop fire nova the second you notice him.. Then get a CL of, followed by a shock, btw i always use 1 frost 3 earth, since earth shock resist sucks, and the fire never gets to tick anyway.
The 4 set glad bonus will also help on those pesky mages.
Oh, and try to get a personal healer ;) they make or break any fight

Not a lot to do about it.

If ns+em is up then retarget and waste them.

Other than that I can only think of trying something like dropping an earthbind , frost shocking, and backing your shamans out of there so you can apply a nuke.

Another alternative is to have an emerency earthshock rotation macro. e.g the press once, shaman one hits it., press a second time and shaman two has done it and so on.

You may even have the other shaman lesser heal themselves (perhaps even taken the talent in resto that reduces your chance of interrupts when healing.

Perhaps 5x fire nova totem, when you see him running in - or aoe him back with 5 sets of magma totem.



Other things I would need to check out - are there any potions that give you the ability to cast uninterrupted

The best way I've found to deal with them is the drop nova, let them take that hit, followed by magma. 5x magma will quickly eat a mage fast. Shock if you can (the 3 frost, 2 earth is my method) and instead of chain healing (because interrupts on it suck and it's cast time is too long) I have a button bound to each shammy will target himself and LHW. I'll let the magmas eat away the mage(s) and worry about whatever else is dpsing me. Since as a caster you only need to be 180 degrees facing a target, I'll also turn 3 of my shammys around the other way and mash my shock button so I'll guarantee to get the mage as he circles in and out.

If there's more than one mage (or if at least one of them is fire with dragons breath, i'll bloodlust and chain heal. I personally find blizzard more annoying because of the chill effect.

In arena i would normaly just ignore him untill i have nuked down all his guys standing on a range.. that goes with rogues and warriors aswell.. then i would move over to the BG tack on killing those..
In BG (or as last in arena) i will deal with it by droping 4 fire nova totems and then 4x shock him.. that will normaly kill any mage or othere anoying melees that rund to much to get Lightening bolts going smoothly.. remeber to purge him just before the bomb and shocks... So.. drop bombs.. Purge then shock, if good timed that should leave around 10k in the same sec :D Follow up with 4 magma if its anything left...

Not sure if this is everyone elses experience, but after you get some better gear it appears to no longer be an issue - I love it when they try AOE on me, they hit for shit. Same thing with Blizzard, I can't tell you how many times I go through BG's and the same dumbass mage thinks he's gonna isntagib all my guys with a damn blizzard.... I end up killlin him about 9 times before the BG is over...

what you should be aware of is another MBoxer that uses 3 mages and 1 priest to aoe you , with a pladin killing your totems at same time. ( not that its fun). I have killed many grped shammy that are too slow to drop grounding totems . key is to get close to you stun all with blast then POM kill grp leader then fear bomb .

not that I enjoy this but hey it works

I usually do as most other here, with the nova/shock/NS+CL

But If a fight is very chaotic, I have another emergency system that works fairly good if you get hit by several aoe'rs.

I first pop bloodlust, then I use a roundrobin chain heal (one shaman heals the next, then the next etc.

This will give you a really good aoe heal, and keep you alive while your totems do the job for you.

Note: this requires 5/5 talents in the interupt reduce for healing to work any good.

All AoE silences and Stuns are OP and should be nerf nerf nerf nerf nerfed :p

yeah, the mage that got my team last night killed us before the nova's even went off... i can't wait til 70 and some real gear:) does res help against that aoe?

And BTW.... mage is the only class im afriad of on my team... any other class is easy sauce...

Let me just put in my support for fire nova totem. That thing kicks so much ass in AV. I always drop it when someone is in melee range. It crushes warriors, rogues (kills them before they can pop cloak if they don't preemt, and I can finish them off through cheat death with shocks), and the much hated aoe spamming mage :) It is somewhat mana intensive though, but worth it.

edit: pre-70 you simply wont have enough life to survive that. Even at 70 it can be hard. I started out at ~7.k2 health last weekend and now am up to 9.4k +166 resil and it makes a _huge_ difference.

Once you have the gear for it, there is an alternative way of looking at the mage :

The AoE spamming mage is FREE MANA!. He sets off your water shield on every shammy :)
As long as you play with a descent healer, just ignore him while your totems finishes him off :)
