advice on cpu fan please.

so im upgradding my pc and ive come to picking out a new cpu fan.

ill be using the intel core 2 quad Q9300

i really dont know anything about cpu fans( is there even much to know?). I want something that will be perfect and never overheat.. I know price is a good start :P. If you could link me some that would be great, then i have to find a supplier in new zealand for it.

the zalman coolers are very silent and good at cooling. I use one and I am very happy with it. The install is super easy!

Thermaltake Ultra 120 heatsink + Scythe flex 120mm ultra-quiet fan > all. Not cheap, but it's bar none the best damn combo I've ever seen (and reviews point out that it's both the quietest and best-cooling of the sub-$100 bunch). I also have a Zalman 9500 copper standard model in my main gaming rig that works very well, too, though it doesn't cool as well as the thermaltake.

The retail CPU you linked to seems to come with a heatsink and fan combo. Unless you plan on doing some overclocking or trying to build an utterly silent PC, I'd recommend that you just use that. Stock coolers are usually adequate and you can't beat the price.

personally I absolutely love the Thermalright IFX-14.. this thing is HUGE! It seems to be compatible with the Rampage formula too, although with this one I would worry about the case :P


EDIT: just had a look at ur case dimensions and it looks like it should accommodate both. I stress should! The thermalright 120 is probably a safer bet. but if you want to go for the IFX-14 it is silent cooling.. just make sure you can return it if you want to try it, in case it wont fit :)
you can add 120mm fans to the IFX too if you want to overclock, and even with those it is still amazingly quiet.

they should be adequate :S although I have more often then not had problems with them. They are loud when pushed and more often then not allow heat to dicipate to the other motherboard components :S I have a rather biased stance on this though as I have my PC running at full load nearly every minute it is on, so it really depends what you are going to be using it for :)

Agreed. Intel's stock coolers are perfectly fine unless you're doing those things.

I'm also using this one... and so is my brother who heavily OCs everything.

It barely fits, but the temps are really cool.

Thanks alot for all the help. so i put a order in to the supplier for a few that were mentioned.. but they said they have no stock untill end next month I CANT WAIT THAT LONG :P so instead he said that http://www.nzoczone.com/product_info...8e0d6fbc9b8772 should be fine.. Tho both IFX-14 and Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme look totally insain wish they had some in stock :D:D

I agree with people's comments on the Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme, a very nice sink all told. My latest PC was built with one of these and to start wit I was actually running it passive (no fans) as it's actually based on an older design intended to be run that way, it kept the CPU cooler than a stock cooler would have done.

When I decided it was time to push the boat out, take the bull by the horns, and mix metaphors with some heavy-duty overclocking I strapped a couple of Flex 120mm fans to it (meant to only have one but I kind of cheated..) and it happily kept things fairly cool as I was pushing the Q6600 to it's limits.

Can't remember what speed I eventually ended up with but think it was in the order of 3.3GHz which isn't too shabby for a 2.4GHz part.

There are a lot of great options out there..

If I were to go for the best overall cooling, and it would fit my mobo/chipset without interference issues, I'd get the IFX-14.

If I needed something a bit simpler with fantastic cooling, I'd go with the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme or HR-01 Plus.

However, I'm currently using the best cooling for the noise heatsink that won't break the bank, is widely available, and due to fins spaced further apart, excellent cooling on lower-rpm fans: The Scythe Ninja. It's good enough to cool a Q6600 oc'd at 3.2GHz or an E6600 at 3.4GHz without issues and keep the noise down, so that's what I have.
