I'm making a series of dungeon videos. The goal is to essentially serve as a highlight for what FFXIV has to offer in dungeons and also potentially provide some insight into how I've dealt with certain dungeons/encounters. The first few in the series will absolutely feel like I'm just beating up on the game, but I'm including them to give a full picture of what this game has to offer rather than just waiting for those dungeons that take 3 hours for me to beat and scaring anyone away from the game.
I'm really not good at making videos, that should be obvious by now. I am working to make them better, definitely willing to take any feedback or criticism you may have. Along with any ideas or things you want to see in other videos. I talked about my comp a little in this first video.
I will have an aggressive upload schedule this week. Half of the ARR dungeons are a cakewalk, so with production time I can turn around a video fairly quickly. For the longer dungeons, it's going to take me more time to clear the dungeon and it's going to take me more time to clean up the video. Combine that with the fact that I have a ton of free time this week and you should expect to see new videos for this series at an alarming rate this week, but they will slow down in the future.
I will update this thread when I add a video, the first dungeon, Satasha, is currently included. I'm hoping to get a second dungeon run up either today or tomorrow.
Is boxing allowed in the game? All I can find is this:
■Behaviour that disrupts the game balance
Square Enix strictly prohibits the use of third-party programs or tools – including programs and tools that permit automated or “absentee” play – in Final Fantasy XIV. Accordingly, the following activities are prohibited:
- Modifying, analysing, integrating, and/or reverse engineering game software or data.
- Creating, distributing, using, or promoting utilities that interact with the game.
- Exploiting Square Enix programming bugs or glitches.
- Automating gameplay processes.
As multiboxers I believe we do operate in that grey area of acceptability. You could interpret this statement any way that fits your bias. Personally I see this being aimed at bots. People use 3rd party tools/plugins for damage meters. They do not condone, and actually will ban people for talking about it in game. As for multiboxing and software input broadcasting: their definitions and applications could change at any point. If you're gun shy because of Blizzard, that's reasonable, but at the end of the day I'm comfortable with multiboxing this game for a few reasons.
1.) Square Enix has a concept of "Service Account" where you can have multiple service accounts under the same Square-Enix Account.
2.) Multiple people have multiboxed this in the past and present. While not popular to do so for a number of reasons, doesn't make it something that's even on their radar.
3.) There is no concept of a token or way to trade in the in game currency for money. As a result, I can't identify any reason why they would crack down on the behavior of multiboxing.
At the end of the day I'm going to enjoy this game (while I can?), do my best to play to the spirit of the game, and be a good actor in their ecosystem. If I get banned or they change their rules, then I'll move on.

I have put in a ticket to ask, so will return with any answer I get. I also did the same for Rift.
I'd love to box ff14 myself as I already have a 4 seat mount waiting :) My main has done all of the ff14 content while I was on a break from WoW.
I think it's time the list of games that actually fully allow multiboxing was updated.

I forgot this post existed. Have to agree with you. No one is ever going to say you can do it, and as long as their definition includes "automatic" it's really unclear as to whether the input broadcasting is okay. They're not going to bother going up the chain of command high enough to give a concrete answer unless there's a reason for them to do so. An individual wanting to play their game is not really a strong enough reason. It's very likely we're going to get a response that is identical to what they've already said.
Blizzard would have told you the same thing 6 months ago. I can appreciate that you want something that endorses multiboxing, but I just don't think that's the sort of response you're going to get.

I won't survive another suspension :D
I'm not sure, but if I remember right it's possible to play via Steam for free till 35 lvl. Also, no idea about current state, but before "Trial" functionality was like in WoW. So, it was possible to pay just for main account on start and invite trial accounts in order to decide how game fit you.

The trial accounts currently go up to 60, and yes, you can't form a party with a trial account, so you need at least 1 copy of the game. The downside is you can't have trial service accounts. Service accounts allow them to all be under the same Square-Enix account. Some people have elected to use a 3rd party launcher with 4 different S-E accounts and an emulated authenticator. I'm too lazy and prefer to just use the S-E phone app so I bought 4 copies of the base game for $20 each.
The game is currently 50% off so the base game is $10, the latest expansion is $20 or the whole package is $30. Very reasonable. They're also giving out an extra 15 days of gametime once you hit level 30 but I don't remember if that requires an authenticator or not.

Blizzard said multiboxing was allowed in the past.. I even called them up to put a note on my account that I do many years ago.
Square do not feel the same way. I don't think it's good to promote boxing a game that will just end up with people being banned and losing out again.

I think anyone multiboxing in any game must live with there being no tacit approval of a particular play style, nor any guarantee that the game's operator won't take individual or broad policy action against multiboxing (or particular facets thereof) in the future. The best we can do is be courteous in game and play in a way that we keep to ourselves and don't have an outsized impact on solo players. This is especially evident after what happened with Blizzard and WoW.
What I like about XIV is that it lacks the perverse incentives that motivated an explosion in the prevalence of multiboxing in WoW. I think the reply you received from support is all we can expect from that tier of the company, and my hope is that multiboxing in XIV remains unassuming enough that SE is not forced to adopt an explicit policy stance.
As ever, play at your own risk!

I multiboxed FFXIV for several months after it came out without issue. As far as I can see there's nothing in the terms of service and there are multiple threads on the Square Enix forum talking about multiboxing. It's a bit annoying when companies don't openly state what the rules are. My guess would be it's fine unless/if you start engaging in behaviors that impact other players.
Since there's no real PvP in this game I doubt people will cry about it as much as they did in WoW.
The game itself is pretty well made. Slower than WoW but there's a good amount of content. I just can't maintain interest in playing something knowing there's no PvP end-game.

The email they sent me in no way says boxing is allowed. You got lucky.

A couple of WoW GM's have said the same thing over the years. Sometimes you just get a cowboy GM who gives his opinion and gets corrected later by a higher up.
I'd ask for that ticket to be escalated to a senior GM (or whatever Square Enix calls them) who actually refers to the terms of service.

Rift replied to me saying:
Multiboxing is allowed, as long as you don't violate against the Terms of Use
Halatali. Ran a different jobset for the cleave and AoE heals required for one of the bosses.

Haukke Manor. I haven't been playing much FFXIV lately, but I do have a lot of content waiting to be published.
Probably try to get a video out a week which still puts me at like 3 months of getting all the ARR dungeons posted.

A quick question, in FF14 are group compositions for DPS mainly ranged? I assume there isn't an 'Interact with Target' equivalent for melee groups as in Wow or am I mistaken?

Ellay
Typically yes ranged will do better, but as default whenever you attempt to attack something your character will auto face that target. So technically you can move your melee to the target but it's a bit more work.

Thanks Ellay...have just started levelling a character to get a feel for it and intend to four box soon. It seems good so far, quite enjoying that 'first time' feeling you get in a new MMO! :)
