Warlocks were a much smoother experience, voids can tank regular mobs easily enough, and soulstone prevents corpse runs when things go sideways.
Mages can do better when dealing with magic immune mobs, just switch from frost/fire/arcane spells as needed. Warlocks are less useful here, as you mostly have Shadow, with some fire spells.

I just started a Priest/4 Lock team and I'm loving it so far. I'm only level 24 with them at the moment but I think the potential for the team is huge. I've decided to have one lock, that I drive from, spec destro with improved imp talents from demo for the stam buff on my party (and the imp does insane dps at this level). The other three locks are demo/aff with improved void walker and so far so good on their tanking and dot/draining while my lead lock melts single targets/run aways.
I think I will respec when I get into the 40s/early 50s for all my locks to be DS/destro with improved hellfire and have three of the locks sac their imps with DS for the +15% fire dmg buff while the 4th keeps his improved imp out for the stam buff. I think that type of hellfire AoE will melt through dungeons even faster than mage AoE. Also lot of bosses will probably be pretty easy at this level if I open every boss fight with 4 soulfires. Then when I get to 60 I'll respec again to a more LRBS/UBRS friendly spec.
I'm excited about this team because I feel like there's so many different ways to build the lock talents that could all be feasible and exciting.
just Curious, I leveled one of these but I didn’t find it altogether that easy like people are saying... I remember having serious issues in dungeons trying to aoe groups down and struggled hugely with packs, I found it easier in the end to respec afflic, send 4 voids onto different targets then but 4 sets of dots on each mob, it was neither fast nor mana efficient... now I’m wondering what I did wrong looking at these comments...
my aoe tactic was park the 4 locks around a corner at a corner, spec’d destro and LoS pull groups into hellfire, but I always wound up dying before the mobs... I’d oom on the priest spamming holy nova with renews precast on pull... or bubbles on targets that were low.
what I wonder was I doing wrong... in the open world I just used to run by mobs casting 4 corruptions / 4 COA and one shadow word pain and don’t even stop moving. Mobs would die before they really got to me if I ran around a hyper spawn, which is actually how I wound up leveling
The Best build IMO is SL. Don't forget it's all damage that's shared with your pet IE damage from Hellfire.
5 into corruption
8 to get imp VW
2 life tap
possibly 2 for suppression depending on how aggressive you want to play
Rest into Demo until you get SL then start taking destro.
The other important part is syncing you abilities properly. For instance...I have a bind that does Prayer of healing on the priest while it having a Hellfire channeling macro. At low levels you can do Rain of fire and say Holy Nova. I also have lifetap and Prayer of healing on a key. Two taps and the locks get a good chunk of mana and are healed for what they lost. If they're really low mana I just tap and hop or run around til mana is full then canabalise/bandage.
I think a lot of people forget or under estimate wands as well. Wands save a ton of mana and downtime and do more damage than say drain life even when specd in it until late game.
The big advantage of warlocks is the fact that they're pretty much tanks. With a cheap armor potion I have around 20% physical mitigation from armor alone, plus 40% from talents. Warlocks can tank any 5man or UBRS and even some raids bosses. There are some fights that are much easier on warlocks compared to mages, like the bats that AE silence in BRD arena. I found those very annoying on my mages but a piece of cake on the warlocks. Same with the emperor in BRD. He hits hard, is immune to CC and to magic whenever he enrages so he's a pain in the arse to kill with mages. On my warlocks I could just tank him no problem even when I was in preraid gear.
At later levels I actually don't use hellfire a lot. Once you get a solid amount of shadow damage just stacking DoTs on everything will kill it. Most of the mobs in later dungeons have some form of interrupt, stun, etc. that will break your hellfire channel and run you OOM fast if you try to keep recasting it. Mostly I use hellfire for quickly clearing minor add spawns like the skeletons on Baron Rivendare.
In PvP the big problem with warlocks is their damage takes a long time to ramp up. It takes at least 3 seconds to stack 2 DoTs per target and then however much time for those DoTs to tick and do damage. SL Warlocks are tanky but you actually end up taking more damage compared to mages because their damage takes so long to accumulate. 15+ Seconds to get your DoTs out on a party of players outside a dungeon somewhere compared to mages who can just wipe a stack 2 GCDs. In smaller scale stuff where you're just killing a few players who are competing for songflowers or whatever, a stack of DoTs will kill most people.
In the end, I ended up leveling both teams and just swapping in one of my warriors or warlocks for dungeons where there are bosses who are too annoying to do without a tank. Both groups are fun to play.

I leveled a 4x lock/dsic and then swapped to mages later on (4x mage/disc).
The reason I swappepd was mainly group pvp, but locks are insanely fun as well. Main problem with wpvp with locks, 1 good mage will cause slight trouble,group of 3 people can wipe you.
On the mage side, I was able to solo 10 people with 4x mage disc. But if you ignore pvp side, locks are incredibly op once they hit bwl part of gear.
I run with a lvl 27 Disc Priest, and x4 lvl 27 Demo Locks (imp corruption/imp life tap, 1 with imp Imp for Blood Pact, rest Imp Void)
I basically just dot/wand/heal. 3 Voidwalkers tank. Priest heals as needed.
I know they are early on, but they are MUCH slower than my PMMMM team, however WAY safer.
Personally I find the gameplay with my lock team much more engaging. With my mage team, I just jump in with Arcane Power and AE/Holy Nova till dead. My lock team feels like planned pulls. Dungeons do take a lot longer though, and if I'm just trying to grind, I'd go with the mage team.

I play LLLLPr, all full geared T1 and one of the locks is full T2.
It's very fun to play, many usefull abilities, invocation, soulstone, pets for dispell and tankiness, dots, but i just leveled a mage team because i mainly play wpvp and Locks have a real lack of aoe damage. 3-4 people can kill you if they know how to counter you.
Mages just have to spam arcane explosion and it's ok.
Fun -> Locks
Infinite power -> Mages
Anyone have a specific spec in mind for your locks? At the moment I'm boosting 3L+1Pr with my 60 Mage, but plan to will swap around between WMMMPr, MMMMPr and LLLLPr or some combination thereof.
I've never actually played a lock, so looking through all the wowhead build specs trying to see which would be multi-box friendly isn't working.
Spec into the talent that makes drain mana do dmg. DoT all the mobs and drain mana the caster, you never need to eat or drink that way...Quote:
