Least valuable Gathering profession INSIDE Dungeons?

What do people consider the least valuable Gathering profession INSIDE the Classic WoW end-game Dungeons?

If you were to Rank them would rank them Mining > Skinning > Herbalism for their value inside Dungeons?

From memory Mining is critical for Dark Iron ore among other things.

I remember Skinning tons of mobs in Vanilla but don't know if skinning is important inside the end game instances we would be otherwise regularly farming for gold.

I think some things may leverage herbalism in dungeons but I don't know if the particular herbs available are only available in abundance inside an instance (like Dark Iron ore) &/or if the quantity of them warrants a proficiency slot over mining or Skinning.

The reason I ask is because I am planning the following proficiencies while leveling:

Character1.Character2.Character3.Character4.Character5;
Enchanting.Enchanting.Enchanting.Enchanting.Enchanting;
Nothing....Nothing....Mining.....Skinning...Herbalism;

Note: I was planning on basic Enchanting on each character while leveling to disenchant bound gear that each character outlevels. Once I get most into BiS gear and start prepping for PVP I plan to just keep one Enchanter in the party...

And then at cap, for PVP, I am planning the following proficiencies:

Character1.Character2.Character3.Character4.Character5;
Engineer...Engineer...Engineer...Engineer...Enchanting;
BlackSmith.BlackSmith.Mining.....Skinning...Engineer;

Basically to fit in the things I want for PVP on my main group I can only keep 2 gathering proficiencies... When not PVPing my team will likely be grinding instances so keeping some Gathering may make sense... My assumption up to now was that I would drop Herbalism but curious which Gathering proficiency others would drop. I do want to keep 1 enchanter in my party to disenchant BoP items that my party can't use and because I don't have a warlock in my party to be able to send a member back to town to a bank alt disenchanter.

Edit2: Note that I plan to have multiple alts not on my main team that can get any proficiencies I want that I can't keep on my main team. I could maybe park one outside a given instance to come in an gather herbs (or whatever) if that made sense...

While in dungeons I'm planning on grabbing anything i can. If a dungeon takes an extra 15-30 minutes to get all available resources I'm OK with that. It sure beats having to buy mats off the AH if you need them. Regarding professions i'm planning on having engineering or blacksmithing (I "think" both can open doors but need confirmation), mining, herbalism, enchanting, and skinning represented across the 5 and filling in alchemy and tailoring in open spots. That's the initial plan anyway.

Understood. If you had to drop one of Skinning, Mining, or Herbalism, which one would you drop?

Probably skinning. Seems like the AH is likely going to be overwhelmed with regular leather but ores and herbs are always going to be in demand.

I also belive this to be the choice to drop. From reading different threads and forums, the question "how can I make gold early on" always get a respons of mining/skinning or herbalism/skinning. The market will be so flooded with leather early on and many people that don't understand undercutting, will undercut and leather will be cheap/invaluable. Just a guess, though. I have 0 experience with fresh vanilla servers. This is only an assesment from various forums.

Early on I will have all 3 (skinning, mining, gathering) on my dungeon team and won't be dropping one untiil I shift my focus to WPVP in Phase 2+ (& only after powerleveling 4 other character's Engineering skills).

For whichever I drop I plan to have one or more alts that will max that profession for gathering that mat from the open world (just not from within instances when grinding dungeons).

For example, if I were to drop Herbalism, I would likely have 1+ Druid(s) (or Rogue(s)) setup to gather Herbs from the world and thus I would only be foregoing herbs in my regular dungeon grinding.

For example, if I were to drop skinning, I would likely have 1+ Hunter(s) dedicated to kill/skin mobs from the world and thus I would only be foregoing leather in my regular dungeon grinding.

Note that I am pretty sure I will not drop Mining as BRD will likely be one of my mainstays and mining seems pretty major at least in that instance.

If you were to only be foregoing gathering from inside instances (because you had gatherers for the open world) would that change your answer?

I could see easily leveling a multiple Hunter based team for skinning in the open world (or even instances) if I really want to focus on skinning at any point so that may indeed be the right answer.

In the end I suspect I will have better insight once I get my team to cap and get a better feel for which instances I plan to regularly farm (and which resources are most plentiful in them). If I find that I really want all 3 maybe I will just have an alt that I swap in for instances (taking 1 of my PVP team members offline when grinding). Maybe at that time my comfort level will be at a point that I can go from 3 Warriors+2 Paladins to 4 Warriors+1 Paladin for more DPS increasing clearing speed/efficiency so it could be a moot question in the end.

I'd guess, from a mob standpoint, that inside instances they are mostly humanoid. I think, from a foggy memory, that Sunken Temple is the better instance for skinning? And, the more I think about it, maybe drop herbalism? I think it has the least amount of nodes (in instances, that is). IDK, man, I'm probably overthinking it now. :confused:

Node-wise inside instances my gut was that Herbalism was the least valuable but frankly my memory from Vanilla is also pretty foggy which is why I reached out to get other people's input.

I definitely am overthinking it but couldn't frankly stop until I at least put a stake in the ground for an initial path/plan. My brain wouldn't stop thinking about it until I made a decision and/or at least had a risk mitigation path. I started this thread to help me get to a point that I can put this topic down/away and think I am mostly there now (so thanks!). It has helped me to internalize that I have more time than I was initially thinking plus coming up with the new idea to optimize grinding by swapping out my 2nd PVP Healer for a PVE alt for MOAR DPS gives me a way out...

I will probably be following a similar path at end game. I'm trying to not think that far ahead as I've set a large learning curve for my self 5 boxing all different classes. I was pretty decent at it in WoD, but I'm mostly familiar with using all the same class. Gethering professions are still something I'm trying to figure out. Thanks for the ideas. :cool:

LoL. Sorry someone else's brain also works that way but I guess I am glad to have company :o.

Even though I won't be dropping one profession till later I think my "critical-path planning" mind was telling me that there is a dependency and I needed to decide now which Warrior I plan to drive from and which skill that I keep would be optimal to have on that main Warrior so the long term decision does somewhat affect me now... Since my recollection is that mining/herbalism nodes are very intermittent but if/when I do skinning it is a lot of skinning it may make sense to have skinning on my main window I am driving from (unless that is the skill I plan to drop from my team)... It may now be a non issue if I plan to later swap out my 2nd PVP healer for a 4th PVE DPS so I feel better at least from that perspective.

FYI, In an earlier post about pros/cons of dungeon-leveling there were some reports that (in the low level dungeons available during beta) there were generally only 1-2 mineral nodes per instance; which would mean keeping mining up-to-date (strictly) in dungeons is probably not possible. I imagine herbalism is about the same.
