if you are going BM, and you probably should, there's only one choice: "Clefthooves".
with the +50% talent they get 15% leech, you should be able to get that to 16% - 18% easily. the clefthooves get leech of bestial cleave, and the get bonused heals, which means they heal 60k - 70k per cleave on 5 mob situations, its pretty op.
some pulls on m+ will get easier the more mobs you pull into the Cleave meat grinder.
if you also pick the first row talent that gives you 2 pets, mend pet will get cast on both. and leech will heal you 2x, if you also race change to Magthar Orc the pet gets +10% hp and since Mend is % based you will get about 4k+ hp back every 2 secs on top of what you get with the leech on normal attacks and whatever you get back with your defensive traits. more than enough to offset most damage. still, some boss fights are still pretty tricky, i will probably try BM once tier2 comes around, maybe t3. if the expansion will last that long...
the heal from mend pet, if you remember to keep it rolling all the time, will heal more than spirit heal. and when clearing trash the heal from cleave plus the auto wall they cast when low HP, will make clearing pretty easy. with spirit pets MAYBE some bosses might get doable, but the clefthooves make some dungeons like freehold and motherlode so easy that you just don't bother trying to do the ones that need spirit pets. (serpent temple, underot, etc)
MM only gets one strong alpha strike every minute with double tap... it amounts to nothing. BM is the way to go.
The 2 pet talent is so bad, pet ai is bugged to hell and back.. you lose so much dps from it.. better go with the KC one.
Second on the Clefthooves, if you have a real tank and the hunters are just there for dps the spirit pet is better for the utility.
Guys I am having a massive issue tanking, i have the clefthooves out and i am mending them nonestop with MD being sent to all of them but they are being 2 shot,
does my gear determine the pets ability to tank?
I have just hit 120 and have a little gear but the pets are just getting owned on heroic....
any suggestions?
Get good geared...
Do some research into ivl bfa scaling...
Use mend pet on cd...
Use, if possible, spirit pet heal on roundrobin, on your main tanking pet. Alternativly, you want to create a seperate keybind for each character, so that they can use their spirit heal on whatever is the fokus your main character has. You also want to track the cd of these heals. Personally i use the addon named "tell me when" to track spells/cooldowns, but there are newer ones out there, but i havent tried those (weak auras, etc). Takes a long time to learn.
CC if possible.
5 x barrage = does wonders on trashpacks.
Do research on the various trashmobs... interrupt / cc on priority.
The bosses in dungeons will one or two shot your pet fairly easily. But with 5 pets if one dies you can rez it easily while another pet dies, and so on. Even if the boss kills a pet every GCD you will still have at least two up at all times.
Better gear keeps your pets alive longer, letting you do higher keys, killing your pet quicker. Its a cycle.
Awesome thank you for this,
So i have got the CC down pat, trash mobs give me no issue but the the bosses just eat through my pets,
It might be due to the fact that I am trying to do heroics in 300iLevel gear which i know isnt suppose to be the case
I am gonna concentrate on doing normal modes since my pets dont even come close to dying get everyone up to 345 roughly and then move into raid finder,
The pets scale with Ilvl, I just did a +6 last night as Resto Shammy/4x Hunter and completed it in a +2, was decently close to +3.
A neat trick I have as part of my spam is round robin Growl/taunt rotation, it's on a 8 second cooldown, so you could have it cycle every 1.6 seconds. That way each pet has time to actually heal in the process.
I experience the opposite issue where some trash demolishes the pets but the bosses don't do much of anything. Which is mostly due to having 6-8 mobs aoeing down.
My ilvl is 370-382ish right now on this team, so I still have quite a bit ways to work up.
Having a Shaman spamming chain heal (which bounces to pets as well) really helps keep them topped off.
So if you get frustrated with no heals, remember there is the option of adding a healer to the mix and being just as effective! Also wears mail so gear sharing is easy.
To boost your ilvl up, do whichever warfront is up, the arathi one gives out ilvl 340 for completion every time and the first time also gives a 370, and the darkshore is 355 and gives a 400 item on the first time of the cycle. Then do emissaries if they give a rewards, and world quests should be boosting it up quite a bit. They will end up scaling all the way to 385 for the emissary reward.
My Hunters are level 118 atm.. x2 of them have Dreamrunners, and x1 a Clefthoof.
Dreamrunners have 42,576 hp and heal for 3010 per tick
Clefthoof has 34,272 hp and mend pet heals for 2879 per tick.
Also leech is meant to heal the Hunter based on healing/damage but mend pet doesn't return leech to Hunter as far as I can see in my meters.
The dreamrunner is part of the Stag family and gets an extra 5% hp bonus.
the Clefthooves get 10% more armor and 20% more healing received, as well as an auto shell when falling below a certain HP. Also get heroism/bloodlust with clefhooves.
What I was trying to say that the healing from mend pet was hardly any different.
You guys are just way better than me. My hunter team is 390 iLvl and I can barely one chest a +2 Kings Rest, think I had 18 deaths that run. I do OK with a healer in the mix, but cant figure out why I am so far behind others with just hunters.
I did not know that. I was going by the easiest-hardest list from RedSorc, but he did make that list with a trinity group.
I've been trying out a 5 hunter team too. FWIW, things that have made a big difference to me are:
- GSE: when it gets hectic I get useless as it’s all too much on the screen to focus on. Having one spam key for all attacks was a game changer (even if it’s made things more boring too!). The macro I use may not give me 100% efficiency, but 70% efficiency 100% of the time is pretty good.
- Slowing down: as a counter to the first point, when I rush to do extra DPS I often get myself in trouble. Most of the time the trouble is from mechanics, not straight mob damage, and training myself to stop the spam key and concentrate on re-grouping, running, changing team direction etc is better than getting the extra DPS (especially when pets carry on regardless)
- Consumables: this may be a well known rookie mistake, but I used to not bother with consumables thinking it was a waste of time and effort for a few tiny percentage point of DPS improvements. Now I realize that when I have a flask, food buff, war-scrolls, and then pop battle potions and drums on a boss pull, they go down in half the time which often makes mechanics just never happen
- Moving: I’m getting better at moving more frequently. I’ve found if I stay still I get caught out by something unnecessary. Some bosses (eg last boss in Shrine of the Storm) now seem trivial just by continually running around them.
My experience is that hard boss mechanics are a deal breaker (eg Atal’Dazar) so I normally don’t even attempt them. Of the ones that are feasible, I split them into two groups. One has minimal mechanics on the trash, with good space to move around when needed. The other is the opposite.
I’ve found the first group (i.e. the easier ones) to be: Waycrest, Motherlode (apart from the last trash run of bomb swirlies), Freehold (apart from the goo at the beginning), Tol Dagor
The second group (i.e. ones I can do, but normally with lots of wipes and taking twice as long as they should) are: King’s Rest (those goo things at the Embalmer boss annoy the hell out of me), Temple of Sethraliss (Getting from boss 3 to boss 4 can itself take 10 minutes of orb carrying frustration!), Underrot, Shrine of Storms
Lastly, getting myself back on topic: I’ve been using the spirit porcupines and find them much more effective than the clefthooves. I have an action bar next to each party unit frame (using FX clickthrough) with my main defensive stuff on (health potion, spirit mend, exhilaration, turtle, survival of fittest, disengage) and each toon has the same abilities on number keys so I can click the screen if one toon is in trouble, or press a key for everyone. Without the spirit mend in there I’d be doomed as I often use it pretty much on cooldown.
Thank you guys for this thread.
So what would be, in your (various :) ) opinion the best pet combination for a 5 hunter bm team aiming at mythics+?
Cheers.
A.
Yes but since we're talking about 4 or 5 hunters, is there any virtue in the mix? or not? if yes, in what proportion?
5x hunters will allow you to spam keys, since we cant delete keys anymore, you'll find yourself doing lots of crap keys to get one to push... so i would favor the extra speed of 5x hunts.
4x hunts seems a bit busy, resto shammys are a good, but mainly to heal on bosses. trash healing should be mainly from leech cleave, eventually trash will deal insane damage, if you rely on healers pets will die. and having a tank will screw up pet agro, resulting in the tank taking too much damage to solo. (not mentioning losing the 5th mail drop). if you need the healing on bosses, you are not killing fast enough to ignore mechanics. (maybe a 5th hunter will help ;))
the key is ilvl... its critical to get your pets enough stamina to survive more than a few hits on bosses, and initially with sub 100k pets, it seems impossible. but in time they will get far stronger. keep in mind that the stam budget on items gets WAY higher on high ilvl pieces, and azerite gear has an extra stam budget.
so you'll find that a 5x hunt with 380ivl will destroy m+ up to +5ish (non tyranical), but past that point bosses will down your pets too often, and since they drop off the agro table on death, having more than 5x pet deaths on a boss fight will have you ressing pets, trying to drop aggro, kiting AND trying to DPS... at that point your are better off FDing and resetting.
point is, as someone said already, 5xhunts will turn into a grind for ilvl. its a good grind, since you'll be getting upgrades on every chest (due to trading and warforging mainly). if you can deal with the chore, then 5x hunts is fast, reliable and the ilvl will steadily climb, expect +5 group ilvl increase per week, slowly declining, peaking at 400ish. from that point onward things get a lil weird. pet HP literally explodes and im guessing pet tanking gets a lot easier. this is due to the massive stam on all gear, specially azerite pieces. you can exploit this even further using Magthar. (+10% pet hp) next m+ season with 430ilvl as base will be pretty broken for hunter teams.
as far as pet issues, i haven't sen any problem with pathing outside of boralus and tomb... those places are dead keys anyways.
and the healing from leech works fine, and its there mainly to replace fighter chow and allow faster trash cleanup. don't expect to be able to reset an encounter or do the absurd healing prot palas can do.
the idea is to have a constant healing influx to offset debuffs, dots, and random damage. otherwise you have to stop and eat all the time.
get a spore bat ;)
Which clefthoof pet in particular would you guys suggest?
They all do the same thing to my knowledge. I ended up just grabbing whichever one was easier in WoD.
Check out this list, the Gorilla also has Triggered Defense and its a bit smaller if you don't like how much room the clefthoof takes up.

Hi,
is it better to choose Mag'har (+10% pet hp) or Zalandari (heal racial =Regeneratin)?
thx
Hmm I might check the clefthoofs out, I play 3 hunters and use spirit beast, corehound and devilsaur. Mainly for looks tbh, but something that increases healing to my team would be nice.
There is a glyph for that!
