I have never PVPed in WOW, plenty of experience in Eve and recently in SWTOR, but never in WOW. (Aside from the odd world-pvp gank.) I'm very keen to learn, but specially with RAF ongoing, not so keen to do it on 'just' one toon. What 5-man composition would be viable/easy to learn with? Is it viable to level purely via pvp? What pvp options exist for leveling a 5-box with?
With RAF Xp I would not suggest doing Only pvp. You dont get much xp for pvp and you want to level as many toons as possible during RAF XP. That being said, 5 mages, disc priests, druids and ele shamans are alot of fun in pvp. I am currently doing 5 resto druids no RAF just heirlooms and its ALOT of fun. Disc Priests can kill my entire team with pennance but I avoid them. That said Disc Priests Pennance is SUPER OP in lower BG's. You can kill anyone and they will almost never break your shield. I moonfire x 5, Wrath x 5 and only got the priest to 50% when he rebubbled. Mages as arcane do huge burst and lets face it you cant lock out 5 mages so something is gonna die. Ele shams can heal and do good dps (chain lightning is super strong in bg's).
Its all personaly preference really with 5 toons coordinated assault stuff dies really fast and you just sit back and get raged at.
Alterac valley at 40+ is amazing exp with RAF. Aslong as you are actually grinding mobs in between. Depends on your server que times also.
As a new player you'll probably want to have all of the same class to learn with.
5 shaman is still pretty fun but you can be overrun very fast at lower levels without any resilliance or tremor totem.
5 mages might be pretty fun for a new player
really just start a couple of sets and see which one you like.
I reckon I'll just try 5 druids and have them dual specced for pure-healing in pvp and 'normal' specs for a PVE group.
That way I can level them in the RDF (Which I am very comfortable with now) and stay in the pvp queue in between.
My question had more to do with pvp tips/resources (where to find strats, for example) what type of pvp would be reasonable to learn in, etc...
Any input there?
FYI you can have 5 resto druids in LFD, Open with wrath on one toon then MF with all toons 5x rejuv/regrowth on the "tank" and just wrath spam stuff dead. Its super easy and when you pull to many you can just self rejuv/regrowth everyone and still dot all targets and watch them die.

most of the time when PvPing as a boxer, the amount of output isnt the problem... its staying alive long enough. HEAVY resilience is a must.

Prioritize buying a 2 minute re-use trinket to break loss of control effects.
Once you're maximum level, you'll want the two-piece bonus for your gearing.
Gloves have something extra on them, and if its useful for your class that's a good first piece (after the Trinket).
Your helmet will have a Meta gem slot, so that's good to have early too.
After that, whatever pieces have the socket colors to activate the meta gem.
Even if you're not spending much on gems/enchants, they do add up.
Socket your socketable gear and enchant your stuff, even if its lower enchants.
The two biggest annoyances to PvP as a boxer are: a) Fear Bombs; and b) Sap.
The trinket is one Fear break.
After that they don't last that long.
And then you become immune, due to diminishing returns.
If your team has a Shaman, you can drop a Tremor totem, which counts as a raid-wide Fear/Sleep/Charm break.
You could round-robin your Tremor Totems for multiple breaks (which can be used while Feared).
Death Knights can Lichborne, to become immune to Fear/Charm/Sleep for 10 seconds or so.
But it doesn't seem to work to break those effects while they're on you.
So essentially use Lichborne when a Priest, Warlock or Warrior is running towards your group.
With a Priest, you can Fear Ward.
You can also Mass Dispel.
If you're quick, I would round-robin (and Glyph) Fear Ward onto your Master character.
Who, will then be immune to the first application of Fear...
And will quickly... Mass Dispel the team, to break their Fear.
Then hit your round-robin Fear Ward, to make the leader once again immune to the first application.
As a Paladin, you can bubble which will break fear.
I don't think other classes have tools against fear per se.
But it isn't the end of the world either, as it won't last terribly long... and your characters will be in the same general vicinity.
It you have Interact With Target keybound, and have Click to Move on, you can use that to regroup your toons.
For Sap you just want a variety of AoE effects if possible.
I have Blood Boil on round-robin, which is like Arcane Explosion for a Mage.
I also have the ability to Death & Decay, on round-robin... meaning I can cover a large area.
Other classes will have AoE effects.
I really like to have the option to Rez.
Druids and Death Knights can battle rez, in combat.
Both have a reuse timer, but the DK's also need a fair bit of Runic Power.
Meaning Druids are more reliable in the use of a battle-rez.
They can also glyph Rebirth, to have the target Battle Rez at 100% health... which for a melee toon means, essentially ready to attack immediately.
Shaman toons can self rez...
Any of the healer classes can Rez others, once they get out of combat.
And a split up group kind of sucks.
On that note, its worth getting the Classic Warcraft trinket, for Alterac Valley.
That will let you "hearth" to right outside of the area that your General is in, which can be used to regroup the team.
It will also remove inactive debuffs if you're flagged as inactive.
Healing is a very nice bonus to have, and in general is a larger impact than plain killing things.
But the most fun teams have a balance of this.
I especially like 1x Healer and 4x Damage combinations.
Another consideration...
The more classes that are the same, the easier PvP is.
And the more diversity your team possesses, the harder it is to use the team at maximum efficiency in pvp.
It might be nice to have: Paladin Tank + Priest Heals + Elemental Shaman + Arcane Mage + Destro Warlock in heroics.
You have a lot of damage types, several crowd control options, class buffs etc.
But the 1x Paladin & 4x Shaman team...
Dual-Spec the Pally to be a healer as well as the tank in PvE.
And the Shammies can all be Elemental in PvP (possibly with one as Resto in PvE).
This team will do far more in PvP, because the shammies are essentially all the same... making them much easier to manage.
In PvP, I've greatly enjoyed:
1x Paladin & 4x Death Knights
5x Elemental Shaman
5x Feral Druids
5x Resto Druids
In PvP, I didn't like:
1x Priest & 4x Warlocks (20 dots on someone is funny, but not enough burst; have only played this team in very low level BG's)
Mixed Teams
I'm leveling:
1x Druid & 4x Shaman
Tank + Resto + 3x DPS, for PvE.
Boomkin (+Spell Power buff), 3/4x Elemental, Possibly 1x Resto for PvE objective maps like IoC/AV.
Interesting that you hated your low level locks ualaa, I've got 3x destro locks with a priest at 61 and had a blast all through the 50s in AV. To be honest I like them better than my shammy team so far (they're at 79ish)
Want the best advice? Pick something you think you can have fun with and make it your own, don't worry about doing well in rated setting if you just want to have fun. If you want to push rating then after you learn to multi-box with your starter group look at what classes you think might work best overall and switch to that.

Essentially mana issues, which due to the level was totally understandable.
I haven't really given the team much of a chance, because I did 5x Holy Pallies (1st to 57th), then Cata launched and I played "main teams"... 5x Feral Druids (from 80 to 85, and then the Honor Grind), and then the same with the Pally/DK's (80 to 85, and Honor Grind)... as soon as the team stopped being really fun.
The problem with the dot classes...
While the dots are ticking away, they're still killing you.
If you were playing Mages, Shaman, or any nuking class... and had landed that many spells, they'd already be dead and not killing your team.
I'd imagine the play experience would change with levels.
More mana, more spells, more heals, more health, etc.
Thank you all for the recommendations/advice. I tried a BG for the first time last night, with a solo holy paladin to get an idea of how things go. I reckon it'll be fine for me to run, say, 5 druids, at least as a start and 'upgrade' to 4dk+paladin later on. I am still rolling up my teams, second team to 80 now. I will probably defer my pvp ventures till after RAF ends though... 8 weeks to go. :)
Once you can get into a 40-man BG (Alterac Valley, AV... or Isle of Conquest, IoC) things get a lot better.
Being 5 of 40 players, allows you to win a lot more than being 5 of the 10.
One of my funnest teams I have played in a long time (especially at a lower levels) 4 Hunter and 1 Shaman.
