CTM/IWT - Need advice from the pros.

Ok, so lemme preface this a bit.

I'm a SHM/WAR/DK triboxer who has had arena experience and heroic/raid experience. I'm no stranger to setting up CTM/IWT.

However, there are some frustrations I get from this which may or may not be solved via advice. So here is my attempt.

When CTM/IWT leads to consistent overstepping (moving past the target, into infinity) what is the best thing to do? Take the IWT command off the DPS FTL mouse wheel? Should I only click IWT to reach the target?

Another question. I am thinking of going back to 5 boxing by bringing two clothies into the fold. A lock and a mage. To what extent do these two ranged DPS roles use IWT? Do you have a IWT key for melee and another for ranged?

I'm pretty good at handling all other situations in isboxer/innerspace but this one bothers me a lot. Any advice will be considered.

Is this for PvP or PvE? I am strictly PvE and I manually control my IWT, so I very rarely get runaways. If you want to keep it built in to you spam key, you may want to try either spamming slower or making sure it doesn't got off with every single press, or setting up a toggle that turns off the Click-to-move part. Of course, turning off click to move means they won't run up to chase something, so you'd only want to do that if you are going to be staying in one spot to fight. Either way, spamming too much is usually the main cause for the running off. Reducing the frequencey with which IWT is spammed one way or another should help.

As far as ranged vs melee, I have IWT set with 1 keybind for everyone. This is the one I use for questgivers, flight paths and things like that. But I also use it for getting back into range or refacing in the case of fearbombs or the like in combat. Melee has an additional keybind, which is the one that I spam for combat.

Both PvP and PvE. This problem largely comes up in PvP.

To be clear on what I do:

I have an assist key, not tied to DPS keys. This sets up the assist so if I accidentally click off the target, my melee will stay on the initial target.

Then DPS 1-0, -, = and some alt combination all do the same which is chain IWT and 2 (mousewheel down) together. 3 (mouse wheel up) is the exception which does an AE macro sequence between the melee dps.

The problem seems to be that in PvP, I am spamming from the mouse wheel so they almost always step past the target. I also play from the healer, and use a riptide, wave, wave macro (mousewheel down). My heals are locked to the same action so it seems like the spam is unavoidable in this instance.

Could it be as simple as adding an additional step that prevents continuous spam?

If you want them to move to the target, and then stop...

Press the key once.
And don't press it again, until they're already adjacent.
Once adjacent and stationary, spamming the key will not result in movement.

I personally spam the key, and enjoy the circling about of the target in pvp.
I've also set mine up with a toggle, so I can spam my key.
And when IWT is "on", the melee toons receive it frequently (one per press of a DPS key).
But I can turn it "off" and still spam the same key, but they don't receive the IWT.

PvP it is generally advantageous to be on, and spammed.
PvE, you'd want to press it once to move them into range and then spam or not (once they're adjacent, IWT won't cause additional movement).

Yup. When it comes to quest givers and other stationary targets I just click it once.

The way I handle my melee is like on a leash. I send them, yank them back if they are going the wrong way or off target and then send them back out again.

Kinda like a pet.

The problem ends up being in open PvP where I'm distracted and they've gone off target and just keep trucking. Sometimes by the time I realize it they've gone completely out of range and are usually dead.

That's the drawback of playing from the healer perspective. It's either lose the healer (as melee) or lose the melee (as healer).

If I bind a stop in the steps of the mousewheel toggle then I have an unbreakable interrupt in my motion that just won't do in PvP. The best I can do is (being left handed), end to stop, delete to follow.

I guess at this point what I need is an addon that will alert me (in really big letters) when one of my melee run out of range.

Anyone know of such a macro existing?

I don't know about text alerts, but Pitbull and Shadowed Unit Frames both have range fading for the unit frames.

Drive with the healer.

Target the desired opponent to kill.
And repeat.
But if your toons start to move too far away, target a closer opponent.
So your toons will move (via IWT) closer to you.
This is optimal anyway, since you can then Death Grip a rogue (or similar toon) off of your healer and into the kill zone.

I also have the arrow keys set for slave only movement.
I frequently push down arrow (which is backwards movement) to break follow (or rather IWT running off).
You could bind anything you like for this, either a key or a mouse button.

I also have a hotkey for FTL Follow Me.
It is one of the mouse thumb buttons.
Which is very easy to push; if you watch any of my streams or the videos, you'll notice the purple/pink letters across the screen "FTL Follow" very frequently...

Ualaa, sounds like your setup (from the healer perspective) is much like my own.

We need a new addon then.

One that will alert in REALLY BIG LETTERS when a specific ally (boxed toon) goes out of range.

This. You want that confusing annoying movement going on in pvp, messes with them targetting you and getting casts off.

In pve I generally use a quick tap of my down key (movement slave only) whenever I want them to chillax and stop moving. This will stop the movement while keeping them in range of whatever they are currently attacking. I also have a /follow macro on a quick to hit key that I use if they are running off after combat.

I've got quite a few toggles in my set up.

When I press my G6 key (G15 hotkey), it toggles off the "Melee IWT" mapped key.
Which is the one that is called, as part of my DPS spam for melee toons.
I like to disable this, when I want my toons to not move from their location...
For example, on the ground floor in Stonehearth Bunker, or at the top of a tower as I wait for the tower to burn.
By disabling IWT (the melee version, which is imbedded into my spam keys), I know my toons won't run out and possibly fall off the edge.
That gets me Howling Blast (Frost/Death Runes) and Death Coil (Runic Power), but prevents Necrotic Strike (Unholy Rune) and Frost Strike (Runic Power) from going off when targets are out of melee range.

I like that I have the ability to toggle on/off my melee toon's IWT Spam.
Without changing the key I'm spamming.

Everyone will find a system that works for them.
And you'll tinker around with suggestions others implement.
