There will likely be reviews, comparing the new card to existing cards, in a variety of situations.
That's your best bet.
Not sure about boxing comparisons, but tomshardware has a fairly extensive comparison. Looks like a fairly decent jump in performance as well as reduction in noise over the 480. What this will translate to in terms of WoW performance is anyones guess.
Just my 2 cents. I just upgraded from a 9800GTX which was about 3 generations behind the 480 and now have an ATI 6870. The jump in performance between the two cards is significant when single boxing but I have to say even being 3 generations apart the jump in fps is not that huge in "most" places. What it did enable me to do was pump up the quality settings a bit more BUT again this is really only noticable when I single box.

There is all the reading on specs and comparisons between the GTX 580 and other current GPUs on the market. From what I can tell, if you already have the GTX 480, just save your cash. Not worth the money for a 8-12% performance gain. I was going to buy a 480, but am now holding out and saving up for the 580 mostly for the lower power consumption, heat produced, and noise.

I ordered 2 580s and the 1st one arrived yesterday, but I didn't get a chance to play with it last night. I'm upgrading from a trisli 280gtx to two 580s, and will probably get a third around the start of the year.
Currently, I have most of the graphics settings maxed, but with only 4xAA and low shadow settings and can usually see a solid 60FPS just about everywhere (on a 30" monitor), but it does have a few stutters here and there. My plan is to crank up the settings on max, and possibly set the background frames @ 60 if it'll handle it.
Why run sli you ask - wow isn't the only game I play - and yes, disabling SLI for wow definitely increases performance. Running one instance in windowed mode with SLI enabled, and I'll see a max of around 35-45FPS. The beauty of the upgrades is that my wife and daughter both have some decent gaming machines as well, so the old 280s will be put to good use.
I don't know what I'm more excited about right now though - the 580s or the 160Gb SSD that should arrive today. :D

Just to clarify Zappy, do you mean that you would get better performance on your single 30" monitor using a single 580GTX for WoW than using 2 in SLI.
I have 2 x 295GTXs in quad for my 30" and the lack of graphics quality really annoys me sometimes. Just wondering if it is worth changing to a maxed single card setup...

I can't speak for dual 580s just yet as one is still on back order, but my experience from running tri 280s was that sli kills performance. I recently decided to level my rogue from 70 to 80 playing solo and was trying various tests on him. In full screen mode, max options, I would see a solid 60FPS - trisli or not, but running in windowed mode is where you really see the performance difference. I didn't get a ton of time to play last night, but after getting everything setup on the SSD and changing the graphics options around on the new 580, I cranked everything to the max on the main, and set all my clones to run @ 60FPS in the background. In addition I set my configs to run them all in DX11. The difference is night and day. In dalaran, my main will drop down to around 35 at times, but most of the time was sitting at 60. Every place else I went, it won't budge from 60. For having all the settings on ultra, it's quite impressive - not to mention the water with DX11 is amazing.
Another thing I noticed with the single 580 is that my picture swapping (via keyclone) is instant and on par with ISBoxer. I'll probably make the switch one of these days, but I'm very happy with the performance increase.
Sorry for hijacking the thread about SLI talk. Back to the original poster, if you're already on a 480, it depends how much disposable income you have. The 580s are proven to perform faster, and run cooler, and overclock very well, however I don't think the cost to upgrade from a 480 to 580 is going to be worth it.
Sorry, my bad for the SLI hijacking. Yeah the 295s have an internal SLI as well as between the two boards but it is still something I can disable. I will definitely think about a single 580 as a replacement though, given your experience.
Considering how long it took to get solid drivers for the GTX480 (260.xx), I wouldn't touch a 580 with a 10 foot pole for a few months yet.
Not sure that will be so much of a problem with the 580 considering it is using the same architecture as the rest of the fermi family, just with more resources enabled and better efficiency. From what I can see the GTX 465 looks to be its closest relation and the drivers etc. for that seem to work fine.

to clarify, i was running 2 gtx280's in sli on 2 24" monitors (plugged to 1st card) that is what gave me max performance, i had pretty much everything maxed on main and stayed around 55-75fps at all times, and had 4 slaves clipped to 15-25 on second monitor. this was done on an i7 920 oc'd to 4.0. i tested the 480's and the noise wasn't worth it on my gaming rig so they got sent to the folding box, the 580's are what the 480's should have been imo. they are awesome cards, the only thing that would help me any imo would be a 6core i7 and that is in the future still. as far as the single most upgrade that provided me with best bang for the buck was when i switched from standard hdd's to 2 ssd's in raid0 that was amazing, it reminded me of the boost when i got my first discrete gfx card.

Some more info. My 2nd 580 finally arrived and with these new cards, you can leave SLI enabled with any performance hits.
Currently I'm running everything maxed on Ultra except no AA and have all 5 instances set to run 60FPS FG and BG. I typically see 60FPS everywhere except zones with loads of people, then it will drop down to 30-40.
I tried with higher AA, and with 4xAA enabled on my main, most of the time, I would see a solid 60FPS, but when changing into new zones, my FPS would drop to 15-20. I'm guessing this has to do with the amount of memory on these cards, as after I active swapped between all windows, the frames will jump back up.
For 5 boxing, these new fermi cards will eat just about everything you can throw at them. :D
