Wintergrasp advice/tips/tricks

I have played a couple of wintergrasp's during the weekend, and I must admit I suck so bad :D

One time we where attacking, and I sorta just ran around with the other guys outside the main gate, and then bahm, we had won since someone apparently broke the side walls.

Next game I tried was defending the fort. I ran out on one of the balconies and got hit by some aoe without me being able to do anything since all the ally scum outside the walls are "out of range".
I ran up into one of the towers, and when I finally got to the top, the tower got destroyed so my toons got all messed up in the debris.
When I finally got everyone lined up again, the fight was over, but I though screw it, lets kill some allies. Jumped of the wall and hunted down a mage. Or at least I tried. Got feared then zapped and eventually killed.

Anyway - how do you guys play wintergrasp? Do you jump off the walls when defending etc.?

Any tips and tricks would be appreciated.

First of all, you need to grind honour/badges for better pvp gear as i assure you thats what the ally are wearing.. I sarted PVP'ing my shammy 5 box in quest greens and blues. I found like you i got pummeled to the ground in a few easy strokes. a bladestorm would kill mex5, the lock spell would wipe me easy too, dont know the name but its a purple stream and damages everyone close by, but i stuck at it.

I went AV a few million times and only went AV as well,as low geared 5 boxers ruin every 10- 15 man bg in my opinion. you wont make any friends losing WSG and EoTS for the rest of your team. Spam it on a call to arms weekend and you'll easily grind 150k honour on each toon.

Two months later i now have my non set wrathful and almost full relentless bar 3 arena purchases and all i can say is , what a difference it makes. there isnt a class im afraid of except maybe a couple of preists. as for bladestorm i just heal through and start dps no problem, and rogues are LOL. the key here my friend is resilience and well mapped fear trinkets. Dont be afraid to just spam heal yourself on all toons.

Try to get a healer to be with you as this helps loads. as you spend a bit of time in the BG's people will begin to recognise you, i regularly have a tree camping my spot for the honour kills. thanks to him i so nearly hit wrecking ball on several occasions. my fave thing is to hide behind the hill at our base bridge graveyard and nuke em down as they run up, most of the time they dont know what hit em. You would probably enjoy typhooning ally off the high areas greatly especially the bridge, as thunderstorm gives me massive amounts of satisfaction.
i would suggest forming a 5v5 too , even if you dont enter the arena you still get the points, which will come in useful later.


My tacs for WG are

Attacking: hang around the front for horde to come out and stick with the group, nuke down any that arrive and protect the vehicles spamming single target dps. mages, locks and priests are my priority kill list as they give me the most problems.

Defending: I head straght to the southern workshops grind my rank and get 5 x catapault to take the towers down. once your there, with 5 catapaults it takes roughly 20 seconds. and if i come up against tenacity players when im driving the catapaults i get out, unless there are un-vehicled in the area which are my faction

Something a boxer can do to be a credit to the team beside nuking alliance is to ninja bases.
While defending against the pesky alliance, try to make a loop around the edge of the map and camp your toons behind the buildings where alliance spawn their siege-engines. You will capture it in no time unless you get discovered, if you got gear you will be able to own just about anyone and still cap the place.

This works while on the attack too, make sure your horde friends have siege workshops capped already so that the destroying of towers can go smoothly.


When you get gear it's debatable wether you are more of a credit to the team inside/close to your base or out on the field running about but there is no question that both of the tactics ar every helpful.

When I want to kill a lot of alliance I just run out either far top left or far top right and flank them (while defending). Go for the highground where siege engines can't reach you easily.

On the attack it's just trying to snipe people off and kill turrets while protecting your siege engines. Pretty soon you'll be in the castle and thrashing about.

Nice tips... and yes, I need more pvp gear obviously.

My initial plan is to grind out heroics (when Im able to) and buy some badge pvp gear, while doing some WG for the honor.
But i'm a total noob, but I learn quickly.

As I use vuhdo for my healing, it totally messes up when I get into a raid. I need to find away around this, since it's so annoying that my toons get spread out all over the place.
I also noticed I need like 5 keys bound for healing instead of relying on click to heal. This would also help in the chaos :D

Theres a pretty steep learning curve when you start out at pvp since I need to learn all the classes i fight against, like - rouges. How do I stop them from stealthing or breake their stuns etc. I have read up on this a bit thanks to wow.com but a lot of tips are always minded for 1 toon.

We have 5 toons which sorta changes stuff. Also my main is currently specced feral. I would rather have 4xboomkins in pvp so I need to get some gear for him as well.

I usually stick to capturing/defending workshops. It's the most important thing you can do in wintergrasp, on offense or defense, and the more characters you have the faster the job gets done (and there's usually only a couple people to kill depending on which workshop it is). This makes sure the 3 towers are either being attacked or defended by other people, and of course every wintergrasp noob is going to be between the keep and one of the northern workshops, or inside the keep. You don't need to hang out with all of them

I should probably start piloting vehicles but I let other people bother with that

About Vuhdo healing in BGs, it's not that bad. I have a second layout I use when I'm in a raid of anywhere from 6 to 40 people. I manually switch Repeater Region sets through the ISBoxer control panel in the game (Auto is my 5 man, and I have a separate save for 40 man). Look into doing this and you'll be better off :)

Also for PVP purposes especially, I find it incredibly useful to add some "passive" healing to my rotations. As paladins I set up my healer to beacon my tank and holy shock himself (healing 2 of my 5 characters) for example, and I also have him /cast [@targettarget] flash of light to heal the target of his target. I also have a hand of sacrifice round robin that uses the target of target and some other goodies.

I guess ill have to try and setup the dual "repeater" region thing.

I actually setup a "special" group in Vuhdo with only druids, so all druids in the raid including myself, where in the same group. But that is a bit of a selfish way to manage my healing, as I woulden't be able to heal other members of the raid.

Thanks for the tip Lax. I like the targettarget macro. I have already setup a "passive" healing of my main I use in PvE to take some of the strain from managing everything at once :) And especially when healing with a druid, since I need to stack hots.

I was also considering mapping a key to cast Wild Growth on my healer, since the other toons stay close to him, and this spell is so OP.

LAG + the amount of alliance / horde pretty much neglects the effectivity you have in a BG. You could try capture workshops, but that's about it really.

i can't say i ever really added somethnig to a WG, considering i got close to full wrathful i wouldn't worry really, just shoot some alliance off for ranks/HK's.

head south and capture workshops. then 5xcatapult the towers down. (towers will go down in like 30-60sec with 5 catapults)
does the team a big help. other than that I ninja shops cause it sucks to fight alliance with 8xtenacity. yesterday had a the longest fight with holy priest and resto druid.. :( (they won..)

On Grim Batol, most battles are finished within 10 minutes. So towers don't really matter. This because off massive lagg because of the amount of players. Which means the siege engines can just roam around killing walls without to much trouble.

I was quite surprised how fast these games go :)

Over my various teams (Shamans, Druids, Locks, Mages, Pallies, DK's), I play quite a bit of WG, since I try and make sure I do the weeklies on all teams for max honor. These are the tactics I use...

Offensive Battle:
1. Take out defensive cannons: I find most attacks are either done at the front wall, or the wall adjacent to the front wall facing the Sunken Ring workshop. I usually start on the left-most cannon and work my way right to limit my exposure to enemy players and cannon fire. You want to limit exposure of incoming vehicles to enemy fire, to ensure the outer walls are taken down in the quickest time possible.
2. After the cannons have been taken out, I have a quick look at the map - if there is a shortage of people defending the southern workshops, I'll head south to defend and roam between the southern workshops / towers where needed. If I judge there to be enough people down south, I'll hang around the fort and defend the vehicles as they pound the walls.
3. If not defending down south, after the outer wall has been knocked the first priority is to take out the inner wall cannons, and the second to destroy any enemy vehicles. After that kill the guards and the elite NPC's, and then move to control the inner courtyard. Ideally you want to have control of the inner courtyard by the time the inner wall is breached.
Things to note:
- The battle often depends on controlling the workshops. In an offensive battle, controlling all 4 workshops greatly limits the opposing faction being able to take down the southern towers and gives you maximum offensive firepower (16 vehicles). You can usually still win controlling 3 workshops, but losing both southern workshops will usually result in a loss unless it happens very late in the game.
- If the opposing faction takes a southern workshop and begins attacking a tower, cap the workshop first and then go after their vehicles. That way when you destroy their vehicles, they won't be running back to the nearest workshop to make another one.

Defensive Battle:
1. I usually start off on the cannon platforms and attack people that get in range of spells. Be ready to move quickly back down off the platform if you start to take a lot of damage - attacking players love to bombard the platforms with AoE spells. If one platform us under heavy fire, just move to another, or go to the base of one of the fortress towers to keep attacking.
2. Once you have ranked up head to the Broken Temple workshop and try to cap it. If there are too many opposing faction players there, go around it and cap the Westpark workshop instead.
3. When the chosen workshop has been captured, build Catapaults and head to Shadowsight Tower and take it out. Catapaults are fast and while the may not do much damage individually, 5 of them will make short work of a tower (you may need to set focus to you main, and have alts follow focus to work).
4. Once the Shadowsight Tower has been destroyed, move on to the Winter's Edge tower, capping Westpark on the way if necessary. Repeat for the Flamewatch tower, capping Eastpark if necessary.
5. When all 3 towers have been destroyed, I have a quick look at the map - if both southern workshops are under our faction's control, I'll head back to the fort to defend, stopping to try and cap the Sunken Ring workshop on the way. Otherwise I'll stay south cap workshops and try to make sure both stay under our control.
Things to note:
- Destroying all three towers not only lowers the remaining battle time by 10 minutes, but for each southern tower destroyed, the Offensive faction have their damage reduced by 5%, and the Defensive faction have their damage increased by 5%. This stacks up to 3 times.
- Controlling the southern workshops is key for a defensive battle - you need at least one, ideally having both controlled.

Can't wait to try it out. I tried defending the Eastern workshop one of the times, with an okey result.

One time the alliance swarmed the place, and I died, but I quickly recaptured the workshop. But your suggestions really helps for a better overview.

On E'T....I have to be careful while we are attacking. I usually go south and get workshops/towers.....but every now and then there wont be enough horde to kill to rank up before the fortress is captured.
So, what i usually do every WG now(attacking or defending) is rank up as fast as possible then head south and do my thing. If a zerg wipes me out It is usually easy just to go and back cap the workshop they just left.

Or, just have fun 2-3 shotting sieges as they approach the fortress.
