Multiboxing on the cheap: My guide to the poor man's play.

So the other day I started thinking....multi-boxing sure is expensive. The average joe might think it's a cool thing to try but doesn't have the money to pay for the subscriptions, the gear, the software. Now, I'm a pro paintball player here, I've been playing for probably over a decade by now. I know how it is, to play with the big dogs, you're equipment can't hold you back. I'm out to find the game for the noobs, the free game that can introduce them to the world of dual(multi)-boxing. It's like an entry level marker, just gives them a taste of the fun to be had.

      • I mainly use this for working from home, I use it to go between the dt620 and green machine so I can run all of my work shit on the 620 and keep my stuff like pidgin, facebook, movies/tv shows from mauling my vpn and making the network guys scream at me :P. For this experiment though, I'll be using it to switch between the computers as the octopus km is a bit finiky

      • I'll be using this bad boy for games I can run more than 1 instance of, I haven't really been able to put it through it's paces yet and am waiting for the chance to get my money's worth out of it.

Consider a word/notepad document, which can be saved and edited.
And then copy/pasted here, in several posts if need be.
I've lost long posts before, and that's what I do now, if the length justifies it.

Remember next time you make a TL;DR to hit CTRL-A and then CTRL-C just to be sure..

I'd go with the notepad/wordpad approach as well. I learned that lesson the hard way as well.

If this is the kind of guide I'm thinking about, please let us know if the rigs will run well for when Cataclysm comes out. Not sure if my current laptop will be able to handle it. I'm already havin issues with Icecrown, BGs with 20+ people, well forested areas like Grizzly Hills and such, and of course Dalaran, but who isn't. I'd like some rigs that take up minimal room and are good on energy usage too if possible.

lol thanks guys, i did write up some of it in word lastnight, and a little before work tonight. after work i needed a strong drink and some mw2 to ease my blood pressure :P. i cracked into the first game on the list as well, 2moons.

definately going to need more post spots, was 8 times over the letter limit. and that was just the list of games!!!!! i plan on doing a some-what in depth review of each game as well...yes...this is going to be a VERY VERY long experiment. i plan on reviewing/playing each game for about a week(maybe less once i get the process down)

*little side note* my call center is moving to low power work stations and getting rid of their old dimensions...might have to pick me up a few for a SWEET 5box. i'm sure my roomies will LOVE our electric bill once that comes about EHEHEHEH. i'm gonna need a bigger desk... :'(

another boring graveyard shift, i'll try and get atleast my rigs up here in a bit. my fellow supervisor said they are shipping out the dimensions to our other office so....none up for grabs yet. i've got about errrrrrrr 5/6 games already reviewed but that's an EXTREMELY small dent in the list of 179 games, some are like "4 story" and "gates of andaron" which are the same game, just 1 is the US version and the other is the "everyone else" version :p...just so happens i'm playing around with gates of andaron right now as well and it actually looks pretty promising. enough of my yammering, on with the updates!

i plan on adding a review of the game as i play them, i only posted the list right now because it'd be great if people that already tried a game on the list saw it and gave me their thoughts and experiences with it...it's no small task i'm trying to complete here and welcome the help.

You might alos consider Input Director, I've found it to have fewer problems than Synergy (spinning mouselook in WoW anyone?)

Keyclone
Keyclone won't work well with certain game clients like CoH/CoV, CO, STO, EVE - but none of those are free to play anyway

in better news, i've got about....10-15 games or so played and reviewed...and am now running defrags on both my pc's(poor little hd's are crying)

one of my fellow supervisors introduced me to www.logmein.com today....first thing i thought....i can multibox at work AHAHHAHA! even though running the remote client is pretty speedy, it's no where near realtime and there's about a 2-3 second delay between refreshes...pet lvling on hero is probably possible though. that involves feeding the pet about every 10 mins or so...should be simple enough to start them up before rolling into work and logging into both computers to make sure nothing dies :D i'm supposed to be working too so i'd be able to manage training and being in a call at the same time

if you want lowest cost you should use HotKeyNet for software

i'm looking for lowest cost+least amount of time in setup, i'm cracking this list down as someone looking to get into multiboxing cheap and easy

sorry about the lack of updates lately, i've picked up another job and the paintball season started up. it's been one crazy summer to say the least!

i've gotten 3 of my rigs up and running, the d620 has some issues running games with the integrated graphics on it being...garbage, but Big Blue and Green Machine are both up and running flawless. i just tried to get back into the Gates of Andaron but they installed hackshield :'( ....that game had so much promise to it too.

bloodcloud, i haven't tried atlantica boxing but...it might work, i've seen a person or 2 do it just to craft(bore). worth trying though at higher levels you have to be extremely careful of running into random mobs while following as they'll attack if you hit them. could make for a VERY long trip to a boss :P

Playing Atlantica Online for a week or so now.

I made good use of HKN starting more clients, window swap them (PiP), removing frames of windows ...
You can party up to 3 teams (and with teams I mean max of 9 individual toons to a max party size of 27 controllable toons) and you can issue commands to 5 toons per combat turn (turns are time limited to 20 sec as well)

There is another thing called Squad (which I haven't tried yet)

BUT:
3rd party tools are forbidden and i doubt they encourage multi boxing.

(lower level bosses are 1on1 so no party possible there).

I currently used it for having on main in a city and mailing items back and forth, since bagspace is severely limited. Mail is instant though.

indeed, AO is a pretty fun game it gets pretty tricky after lvl20 for your slave toons, it's pretty hard to avoid random fights when following someone

I just went to the 2moons link and it said all Acclaim games are no longer playable or available.

2 moons had 2 different companies running the game, acclaim and another company. it's good that they finally made it 1 to make everything easier.

boxing is as cheap as the subscription, anything else is just temporary
