Very Impressed with the people on this board

I am on a lot of forums and something I see specially on some of the Car Forums IE EvoM is that people get mad when people come and ask questions that have been asked before. Instead of giving them crap, people simply direct them to links or take the time to respond with the answer. 9 times out of 10 it takes less effort and or time typing the answer than it does to say "go look it up on the search cause 10000 noobs have asked the question". To me that says a lot about the members here.

I'm on a few car forums as well and see that a lot...and to be honest I find that attitude a bit arrogant and pretty annoying. It's not that poeple posting noob questions don't know how to use the search function, but they may not know the best way to phrase it so that it gives out the results they are looking for. Or they may lack the knowledge to quickly disseminate irrelevant posts making the search laborious and time consuming - something that veterans often forget.

Everyone was a noob at one point...and most of us didn't aquire the knowledge we now have without help from someone else at one time or another.

I try (as best as I can) to explain things in a calm, organized manner. I think most of the members here do as well. It is frustrating when so much has been literally distilled and laid out - and so there should be a BIT of flak given for that.

But honestly, we were all new at something at some point. To me, sharing knowledge and advancing society is one of the best rewards out there.

A single person may be great at a few things but mediocre at most. Together though we can be great at them all.

lol It buges me to see the same Question being asked over and over. Its like come on people can you read?

hmph... i guess that touch of alzheimer's comes in handy sometimes...

For me it comes 110% down to how it's asked. If I see:

Billy posts: "looool omfg this lewkz 2 kewl can u show me how 2 do it? looool liek do i need softwerz or hardwerz? or can i implant in2 brain? LOOOL"

I ignore it or tell the guy what a wonderful asset to our community he is. But if I see:

Joe posts: "Hey guys, I have used the search and browsed stickies, but I'm still stumped. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get KeyClone to work with my G-keys on my G15 keyboard." (example)

I'll answer the dude's question. He's indicated he's done searches, he's browsed the stickies, as far as I am concerned he's done the things he needs to do to start asking questions here.

I guess on a lot of forums you have a wide range of intelligence, with multiboxing (although anyone could do it) only those with a bit of common sense will hang around to long.

If someone appears to have a grasp help is at hand ! If someone appears to be suffering from a lack of intelligence then they get left behind :( (sorry Los).

I always try to nicely refer them to both the search built-in here and google's site:dual-boxing.com <searchterm> syntax. There's so much data here and we've already done most of the work for you already. :)

Here's the one thing that frustrates me with the search... a noob often doesn't know what to search for...

You get a guy saying he wants to press A and have Z received, what do you search for? I know you search for keyclone keymap and you include all terms and you'll come up with a list of 10-15 posts, but if you don't know the term... it's hard to search.

So you search for generics, you include any term in the search result, and 1700 posts later... you're overwhelmed.

The good news is that yes, here we often dont just slap them with the RTFMNOOB stick, we nudge in the right direction til they get some meat in their question then help them out more.

I think if we were any other way, we'd need to check ourselves. Most of the purpose of these boards is to share ideas and help each other. I think a few endlessly repeated questions are understandable (how do i maek a spred out macro lol).
Doesn't bother me one bit...it's nice to help the boxing newbies. =)

I'm just an angry person in general, so I help out angrily.

On a PvE server...

I would venture a guess that the average age of the users here is greater than most the "car forums". While many of us don't find this hobby to be a burdensome one financially it is probably out of the reach of most younger people. While I have met a few exceptions to the rule (both ways) most people who get rude to noobs are of the younger set.

Just saying.
