Old Boxer, New Tricks

Ello all! I quit boxing WoW a few months back because I could just not Afford to do it! but now Im back and ready to start up my boxing adventures again, Iv got 5 battle chests and im going to start up a team of 4 shams and 1 pally, but heres the thing, I run 5 copies of wow and im getting to much lag >.< I used to run 2 on the PC i currently use and 1 on a 2n'd pc, but now id like to run all 5 on 1. My plan is to buy a new PC, and sell my old one, but I wanna scrap what parts out of it I can. So, Can anyone help me in building a PC thats good enough to run 5 copies? my current system uses DDR2 ram, and an X9800 grapics card, Id like to keep thos i I can and save a little bit of money, So I guess im looking for the best boxing PC for under 900 bucks. Anyone out there who can help me?

In general, you want a quad core CPU and plenty of memory. 8GB+ is common. Also be sure the power supply is up to the load, I'm fond of the Corsair PSUs. You can (hopefully) go from there on Newegg.

well you did not give enough information

is the graphics card an ati 9800? or an nvidia 9800? is it pcixe or agp?

you can build a decent computer for 900 or less, that is unless you need to upgrade everything.

what type of computer would you like? premade or are you capable to build a computer?

is this just a gaming computer or would you be doing video editing or what not?

do you want the latest technology or would you prefer to have what works and cheaper?

The graphics card is a nvidia 9800, pretty beefy card. I don't know if I need to upgrade everything in my tower. I wish I knew what kind of mother bored and processer I had, but I do know my processer is dual core. IDK if my mobo can handle the I7 quad or not. And yes I can build a PC, however I did not build this one and therefore have a problem figureing out all what is in it. the power supply is 1000 watts so I think I should be ok there. I have 6gig DDR2, and the only thing Ill be useing the PC for is multy-boxing wow. I mean brousing web pages and email and such, but nothing major. And I want a ballance, as I don't know exactly what I can afford, Lets say I want to be able to not loose my toons on epic flyers, but I don't mind a little lag in dal.

Hold on, Just looked up some specs on my PC. When I run 5 clients of wow I max out my CPU, however I don't run into any ram problems. Could I get away with just a processer upgrade? My Bord is

If you don't already have a 64-bit operating system, upgrade to Win7 Home (or Professional if you want XP Mode).
If you're running a 64-bit OS already, whatever you have will be fine.

6gb of ram will be enough, but 8gb is preferable.

The 9800 card will be fine, you'll want to run 1x AA and disable shadows in wow; probably minimum graphics on the slaves, and only view distance/spell effects up on the main.

A quad core CPU will be a lot stronger for boxing then your processor.

I'd look into a low end SSD drive.
Something to put your wow folder onto but not your operating system.
It's not essential, but its a huge performance boost.




If you can at all afford it, an i7 system is far superior for boxing.

I hate to recommend a quad core system to anyone.

The i7 means a new motherboard (x58 chipset is good) and ddr3 ram.

All the other components from the other system can work in this one.

But an i7 will definitely cost more.

I am running a 64 bit os. IDK what a 1xAA means however. also would upgradeing mearly my processer be worth it? and if so which one should I choose that my bord supports?

If you click on wow.exe
And then click Play.

At the B.net / Password screen, click on Options to the right.
Then click on video.
The top right (drop down box) is called Multisampling.
You'll want this set to the top option 1x.

Clicking on Effects, drag the slider bar all the way left (Low).

If you have software which virtualizes your configuration per character/account, increase view distance and particle density on the main.
It helps to know to move out of the puddle of roiling black stuff etc.

How do you have your folders set up? Where are you getting lag (e.g. Dalaran)? What are the graphics settings on your slave toons?

You might be able to just tweak all that stuff and get things to work. I don't see why it shouldn't work reasonably well with your current computer.

I'd also think that increasing the RAM (via the 64-bit upgrade) versus changing the CPU would be more beneficial, but I am no expert.

to keep your MB, you can get a Q6600 (cheap option) or a Q9550 (pricier) either will 5 box. I use a Q6600 on a P45 MB with 8 gigs.
So RAM, OS, and CPU. After that I start looking to a new system. i7-920 systems are the sweet spot now, great performance and not too costly. Lots of upgrades still for most of the parts.
