I'm curious if anyone knows any WOW related forums that would be either not moderated or (better) moderated only for spam and illegal content but not for opinions, heated arguments, flames or even profanity ?

There's always the wow official forums. *shudder*
no the official forums are moderated for things blizzard doesn't like and threads locked there too when they get "out of hand"
edit: I looked a bit more and there does seem to be a lot of crap there; so I guess maybe it's not that moderated after all...
Yes, Silly d-b mods that try to keep content on topic and enforce rules of the site, protect it's members, and provide a relaxed environment all at the same time. It's a delicate balancing act.
I do find it incredibly amusing you ask such a question here, considering you never pass up an opportunity to criticize the mods here.
I personally prefer heavily moderated 'boards, like Elitist Jerks.
Hell, I've been on that site for 8 months and have yet to post, mainly because I really have nothing to offer.
The signal-noise ratio there is the best I've seen, though. But it's not really light reading :D
People always bring up EJ style of moderation but it's too much IMO for this community. I'm not afraid to be wrong, but I won't post at EJ because I don't like the way they moderate. It works for them, more power to em. But I don't think it's for us.Quote:

Just curious, what would you be trying to post that you want an unmoderated forum?
i get a number of calls from various levels of users... and quite a few beginners have been on these forums, but were afraid to post their questions... even in the newbie section... for fear of ridicule.
afaik, this isn't what Ellay would want... he'd prefer everyone to feel welcome and at ease. bickering and flaming are not his style.
I'd be curious of this as well, since I think the OP is just taking another stab at the admin / mods by posting this here.Quote:

^^ This. Many of you don't realize, but Ellay is the biggest factor in how we moderate. Mods / Admins essentially work for him, and we're given a set of rules to enforce and we do our best. No one's perfect. But I don't want to be scared to send my guildies here. I want to be proud I can send them to such an amazing resource.Quote:

'nova, I am not trying to imply that I think the style of moderation ought to change on these forums. In fact, I enjoy these forums more specifically because I feel like I can post something without worrying about bannination. Then again, the looser form of moderation does lead to redundancy and some laziness from people who are unwilling to use the search function.
I can't really respond directly to what you're saying without knowing specifics, but most, if not all, of the blunt and perhaps "rude" comments made in the Newbie section that I have read were directed towards posters who were asking the same question for the nth time.Quote:

[/quote]maybe, but since they posted to the newbie area... they should have NO worries about being flamed. yes, the questions can be repetitive.. but pointing them to the info is 100% better then 'RTFM NOOB'
if some people can't handle it... then don't look in the newbie area.
btw... ever been to an elementary school? the kids are ALL asking basic questions that have been asked millions of times before. consider the response if the teacher ridiculed every kid that asked a question.
"hi teacher! i'm trying to learn these school things... can you help me?"
"it's in the book... can't you read? "
"well, no. i'm 5"'
"no excuse, noob. use the index"
"errr... what?"
"don't talk back! you're just attention whoring"
"errr...."
"and your mother dresses you funny"
"... she said these were nice clothes ... **cry**"

Lol @ rob and too much caffine
@Gomotron - I see what you're saying, thats just my standard defense because a lot refer to EJ's style. Yes looser guild lines will breed repetitiveness I don't mind, everyone is a noob at some point and when I showed up asking questions I wasn't flamed, and thats all I'd want for anyone I refer here.
ROFLMAO!
ok. I have to hand it to Rob. I am at work laughing so hard I am crying. People are walking by and wondering if everything is ok.
/bows before rob.
I hate threads continuously stopped mid discussions - looking to see how it's done elsewhere (and probably will discover it's much worse)Quote:

OT:
rob's post is very funny - that was worth this thread :-)
Generally, the threads I've seen locked here have ceased to be a discussion. They've devolved into the age old practise of flogging a dead horse.Quote:

Nothing new is being said. The various factions are holding to their position, and it's starting to ease towards personal insults and namecalling.
(You can normally recognise them by a post saying how the forum is turning out like the official forums :) )
The thing is these are not 5 year olds visiting the site. They are usually around 20 years old. They should have enough common sense and intelligence to SEARCH and READ first. Perhaps even do a little troubleshooting themselves first.
Some people will say "Don't read their posts if it bothers you", but the thread titles will be "Serious issue and cannot play!!" Then you click the thread and inside is "ok guyz i just installed kc and I dunno how i get the key to broadcast to my other chars, thx plz".
but you wouldn't see that thread title, if you hadn't been in the newbie area.
granted, if it's in the general area... then it needs to be moved.
the newbie area should be like being in town in UO. safe. step outside of town, into General or the other sections, and flames may happen.
is this a workable compromise?

OT, soz. nothing to contribute to the OP except my opinion on db which is  i wouldn't go anywhere else even if my polls don't get voted on! why would i feel like a newb? i already am one (see sig).
o actually i do have something to contribute!
why not make it so the forums would have a web 2.0 javascript to popup an onmouseover preview of a thread?
(omg double-post sorry)
what would be shown in the popup? the whole thread? or just a portion of the OP?
just a portion of it.Quote:

This is an assumption on ages. I can tell you from personal experience, that this is an entire population/breed of people of all ages/race/sex...ect.Quote:

And no matter what you do, they will always be there.
I agree with this. There has to be a safe place for people to ask questions.Quote:

But also, I really hate to see this entire forum turn into a flame-fest when someone does something wrong/stupid.
If they repeatedly do it, that's another story.

Not that I'm against this idea, but I really don't think our forums move so fast we can't keep up and need a quicker way to skim them all. :P
flaming shouldn't happen even in general, as people can be adults about things without being asses (but, this is an assumption... that was proven wrong recently).Quote:

Ellay is a really nice guy and would like to see no flames on his forums.... hopefully, people can act accordingly.

Elitest Jerk style of moderation is simply unbeatable for WoW communities. I have always been a big fan of it, and wanted it to be enforced here.
you see... that's the problem. we take our cue from Ellay, not you, and his intention for the boards. his personality is not confrontational. he is not in-your-face and argumentative. he is a calm, easy going guy that wants to have a nice, friendly place where people can communicate their ideas, goals, accomplishments or whatever comes across their mind. they shouldn't feel threatened or hesitant for fear of some ass attacking them in a public forum just because that ass doesn't like the question. that is just uncool.Quote:

if you think you should belong to a community that behaves that way... then i suggest going to EJ and attempt to start trolling there.
/agreed. This place is unique because we accept anyone, no matter what their skill level, and we're helpful as long as they're able to help themselves.Quote:

I have a question for you. Is this in relation to having seen other people get "censored" or you being censored?Quote:

Ps: I think EJ moderation would be a lot worse - it's pretty good here; just a bit over the top some fairly rare times; "almost" perfect.
