Other then WoW, what's the best MMO-RPG out there?

To date, I've been playing a lot of Warcraft.
Prior to warcraft I played classic EQ through the Planes of Power expansion.

Unfortunately, the lastest patch looks like it will require a reinstall.
The last patch required a reinstall.
Not worth continuing to play warcraft if its going to require a reinstall for every patch.

Heroics and Battlegrounds are probably the most fun, arena style pvp is mostly bleh.
10-man raids are a lot more fun then 25-man's.
I software box, via Keyclone... so preferably something where this is an option.
Any suggestions on another game?

As WoW is the only one I've played, I can't give much advice on that but your above statement makes me think you are doing something wrong. I software box myself and have never had to reinstall for a patch so with more information I'm sure myself or more likely, someone else, will be able to help you with that problem.

Well.. had wow installed to C:\Programs\World of Warcraft\
I have six instances of wow symlinked off of the main install.
One instance is for everything on when I one-box in raids.
Five instances is for everything turned down when I five box.

I'm running Windows Vista, Home Premium, 64-bit.
Q6600, 8gb ram, HD4870X2.
Warcraft is on the administrator account and is run as an administrator.

Prior to the 2.x to 3.x patch, immediately prior to WotLK, each patch was done by patching the main copy.
And then copy/pasting the wow.exe to each of the symlinked folders.
With that big patch, I received a red error message at the log on screen (where you input user/password info)
A blue poster eventually said to reinstall the game.

They recommended to reinstall to c:\users\public\games
The blue said Vista prefered the public area for writing to files, sometimes having issues in c:\programs\

This time, the patch goes ok at first.
After it patches it says it needs to repatch.
Launcher.exe eventually leads to a screen which says "Patch Aborted".
Wow.exe opens the wow has crashed what is the reason screen. With a dialogue about wow.exe version mismatch.
Repair tool downloaded 2mb, then 26.1mb and now finds wow to be fine.
After each repair, the same shit as above.

As usual, blues are useless saying reinstall.

I just un-link all my folders, patch to the main, copy exe files (repair, launcher, bnupdate, backgrounddownloader, wowerror, and wow) and re-link the data folders. Worked just fine.

I did what kadaan had to do as well, my stuff is working great again!

im symlinked and have never had any hitch with the patches. i just patch the main install and everything else works with no other actions on my part. didnt even have to copy exe's or anything. maybe i just got lucky the last few times... hopefully this patch doesnt put an end to that :S

I played a lot of MMORPG and went back to WoW. I looked back and regret the time I've wasted. If the patch will be your reason of leaving I bet you that 85% of other MMORPG are more problematic and unsupported even the new ones. WoW has the most experience, content and support. You can never go wrong with 11 million players. Not to mention $75,000 Tournament...

I think its safe to say that YOU are doing something very wrong.

10,000,000+ other WoW players aren't having this problem. Blaming the game based on something unique to your setup (and quitting because of it) is a very silly thing to do.

I believe there was an option for me to leave everything in the program files where I had it even though it was recommended to move it to the user’s folder. I didn’t want to change what’s always worked fine for me so I left it how it was and still haven't had any probs yet...

Have you tried running multiple copies without any symlinks or copies? I've run all my instances from the same path and have never had any issues. Not understanding why the need for different config.wtf files either, my configuration successfully runs 36 copies across 11 computers. Each computer has its own copy of the WoW installation and runs 3 to 4 instances of the game started by Octopus. Each time there is a new patch, I only have to patch each computer once and no copying of anything. I start up each copy before Octopus so that the <Accept> is done over the Terms of Service message but other than that, it's ready to go.

The game is just getting annoying.
Single boxing is boring to the point of not being worth playing the game.
Multiboxing made it fun again, but the last two major patches require reinstalls.

If you symlink, there are two files you may need to delete off children wow's -- patch2.mpq in data and patch-enUS-2.mpq in data\enUS -- the patcher deletes these files from 3.09 installs. What I do is have a "virgin" wow folder that I don't actually use to play, it just is where I do all the updates and addons download and stuff, then I have 5 other wow folders (4 symlinked to 1) where I do my multiboxing, that way if anythign ever gets trashed I can go back to my virgin copy and copy stuff around. It also lets you do quick diffs on patch days and see exactly what changed, so you can get things cleaned up quickly.

I am with you Prepared. I dont copy the wow directory at all and run four instances off the same directory. They all have different wtf folders so nothing gets all fubar'ed. I havent seen any degradation due to not going to the trouble of symlinking, by comparing framerates.

Once again - this is an isolated problem with you. Not the game.

On second thought if you wanna try something else I would rather wait for Aion and stick to WoW for the meatime

I havn't patched yet but I ususaly have no problems. I also do what the others say, have a single wow directory on all 6 of my computers, and just update each computer, no symlinks or anythings.

I am sure all the addons are going to break so I doubt i gonna log in for a few days untill they sort all that out.

I have a single wtf folder that has sub folders for each of my 31 guys that i copy to all my computers (after I do things to the files) from my main computer and have like 10 back up copies so I not going to lose anything.

Aion is looking hot hot hot though.

I remember years ago I played a free korean game called MU Online that game was hella good for a free game.

Last time, the data was corrupted.
This time, no clue what the culprit is.

I wouldn't say 10,000,000 have no issues.
If you check the technical support forums, my post was booted to the 40th page within 15 minutes of posting.
Over a hundred players have posted the exact same issue, within a few hours of the patch.
So there are a significant number of players with issues regarding 3.1.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion on Aion, will check it out.

I've never had to reinstall on any of my 5 computers, nor my wife's computer for the patches.

Something's wrong with your setup if you have to reisntall every time.

Just came back to give you my feedback since I kind of derailed your post:

I personally run one normal WoW folder which is where I used to play my pre boxing toons. From there, I have another folder symlinked which is where I play my main out of. I then have a 3rd folder that I play my slaves out of.

For every patch, I run my original WoW folder and due all the updating in it. I don't bother with the linked folders until the main folder is fully updated and working properly. From there, I find the patch file (which is usually in my /public folders for some reason) and copy it to the other two folders. I also do the same with WoW.exe file from my original folder. This has worked perfectly for me everytime and yesterday was probably the smoothest yet since I've now done it enough times that I actually remembered what it was I did in the past. Sometimes I have hiccups because I can't remember which files to copy and where they are but this time I had zero issues.

Wow, about 4 on topic responses and 15 responses about patching wow... some of them, like hairball's, are kinda rude and flamey. What a community! :rolleyes:

Anyways, I found Warhammer online to be a little bit bug filled and glitchy, but I played it single box back when it released. Never got to the high end content it was just too much of a struggle with problems. Seemed like it went smoother than WoW's release by a good margin though. I would guess they are probably working the bugs out, and all in all it was a pretty good game.

Also somewhere on these forums I kept seeing someone talking about Runes of Magic. Completely free knock off of WoW that I hear is actually quite up to par and boxable. Thinking about trying it myself once Halo 3 lets go of me. (stupid MLG)

Also FFXI, EQ2, I'm sure there is others.

I would love to see somebody box another genre like RTS, or FPS. That would be hilarious. :thumbsup:

I have had a couple problems in the past, but nothing that I couldn't fix without having to do a full re-install. I have my folders backed up as well. I simply run launch from my "main" wow install and just copy the patched files over to my other folders (I don't copy any folders within the wow folder, just the files). Haven't had any issues with the last few patches.

So, you probably just don't have your set up the way you need to for multiboxing. I don't know. Anyway, Blizzard doesn't really make it that easy though. Why they changed the folders on Vista is beyond me. Put the patch files in the main folder damnit!!

As for other games. I like Vanguard Saga of Heroes. I played Everquest for a long time so it seemed like what EQ2 should have been. My brother got bored of WoW and has been playing Vanguard for about a year. I'd give that a shot, especially if you used to play EQ.

I 6 box LOTRO and have a blast ... played the first two years with one char and just started 6 boxing ... either way the game is very enjoyable ....



NOTE: the graphics are intense yet beautiful ... meaning you may not be able to box on same machines you box WOW on becuase it is so much more hardware intensive game ... i hardware box it with 6 comps ... but others are pushing 2 to 3 instances i hear out of good rigs .... not many boxing the game so sure someone could figure out how to get more out of machines ... but i am a hardware boxer and do not know much about software boxing ...



regardless LOTRO is amazing great fun .... and i have been playing MMOS for over a decade starting with text based muds tto EQ to WOW to AOC WAR and everythign in between ...

LOTRO DEV Turbine has won the MArch Mayhem DEV showdown of 64 devs 2 years in a row ... 2008 2009 bascally form happy LOTRO players ... BLIZZARD / WOW went out in 3rd round

Fallout three was really nifty game ... but no where near as good as MASS EFFECT ... maybe since I finished Mass Effect right before starting Fallout 3 it had a bearing in my decision of what an aweomse RPG feels like ... but like I said Fallout 3 was fun just not GREAT...

On the MMO side .. I have played them All ... starting with Ultima online many years ago ... and text based muds before that

DDO ... I did not care for it much at all ...... with that said however LOTRO is another story .....

Lotro may be one of the most Unique MMO's I have ever played ... I signed up for a trail accoutn early on and was like meh its alright ... but I gave it another try about 6 months later and took a char up to level 20 ... I began to see how awesome the game really was ...

The Epic books story quest are an incredible adventure all by themselves !

everything else is gravy

it has a music system to play all sorts of instruments and add abc notations into your folder and play your fav songs in game on tons of different instruments! you can even sync up with other toons and play as a band ... pretty darn neat ... heh yestersay me and a guy played Dueling banjos and it was awesome ... even been rocking out on lutes and drums to def leapard tunes ... its unreal fun ...

the crafting is actually quite fun compared to a lot of games but still nto as detailed as I would prefer ...

If your into heavy raiding the game is nto for you though ... it des have hiugh end raids just not a lot becuase this game more about path to to the end not getting to the end which is a neat concept for a game for a change ... there is still plenty to do though after reaching max level ... the amount of quests and deeds and traits to acquire is mindboggling!

GRAPHICS on DX10 ultra high .. are insane good ... prolly best in industry HANDS DOWN no contest ...

hobiies could use a lot more work ... fishing is alright but not reeally satisying

I highly suggest anyone that has not tried it in awhile to give the free trial a go ... its really a lot of fun ... It also has one of the most helpful and friendly communities of any MMO ive played ....

PvP I cannot comment on ... i just dont do it very often at all ... a lot do though ... its based on players vs . monsters ... you can roll monsters to play in the game as well and switch to play those chars and fight the player chars in the game which is kinda cool and a lot of people do it ... just not my thing

just as any mmo ... it has its irritations sometimes but overall it really is a well designed game ... Ill prolly play it til 2010 when the new Star Wars MMO comes ... but even then Ill prolly split my time between the two ... I bought a Lifetime membership to LOTRO which means i can play until I die or the game dies and never pay another dime ... which is really cool for a MMO!

Anywoo I obviously am voting for turbine although I did enjoy Fallout 3 ... it is just not in the same league of fun factor as LOTRO ... IMHO of course

P.S. I noticed several people refernce DDO and LOTRO as WOW clones ... There could be nothign further from the truth ... they are totally and extremely different games than wow ... not even close .... and as someone that has been in the MMO community since Text based MUDS ( look up what they were heh ) WoW borrowed heavily from EQ that borrowed from Ultimate online that borrowed from Text based Muds ... Wow was nto really that original ... it just has bad graphics that lets it play on almost anymachine .. which lets them get the unreal subscription numbers out of asia ... and others with systems that could not handle modern MMOS

THE LOTRO community seems to be very populated with 25-60 year old gamers and the global chats and exchanges are for most part free of lewt spe4k ETC it will actually gte you on a lot of ignore list for talking like that :)

WAR's biggest problem is that there is no depth. Once you max your level out and do the instances a few times you are left with the PvP side of things, ie locking down zones to try and get to the opposition's city. The locking down of zones became tedious quite quickly and there just isn't anything else to do.

What kind of a game do you want to play? MMORPG General has a list of current MMOs and the stance on multiboxing{with some big question marks because these people keep closing my friggin tickets without answering them} and sections for some of the more common MMOs. Check there.

I personally went to EQ2. Station Pass upgrade gives the option to play EQ, EQ2 and Vanguard whenever I want so I have variety if I ever get bored. Hated AoC. Didn't like WAR. I liked DDO, didn't get to do much in LotRO, they were still in beta when I played them and I wasn't multiboxing then. They should have listened to my suggestion to make a version of the station pass so 1 subscription gets you access to AC, LotRO and DDO...then my husband might have been more interested. ;P

Most games are either PvP or PVE. There's not much of a mix. You can find PvP servers for PvE games, and questing in PvP games, but 90% of the focus and development is going to be on one or the other.

Keyclone doesn't seem to work out of the box with much, since most games have problems if they aren't the focused window, but it can usually be used in conjunction with another program. I personally just went with IS.

I played CoH ( City of Heroes ) for some time but that was before I started mboxing. I'm not sure now boxable it would be. There was a follow feature that allowed you to target through who you were following but that was some time ago.
I was kind of so-so dual boxing it at the end using two keyboards :)

I liked the game a lot but it really didn't have the same kind of end game that WoW has.
I used to raid the hami every night there for months on end but the last time I logged on nobody was raiding anymore.
you used to be able to get some 200+ players in the raid, once you had 200+ players on the hami it was more like City of Lag than City of Heroes.

I really haven't played any other MMO's than these two games.

Yup Aion has a very good graphics. For Korean games, you can really expect high end eye candy graphics but almost all of their games are grindfest and lack of content like WoW. Though there are news that Aion has good content and will change the image of Korean MMORPG. The last Korean game I played was Archlord. Nice graphics, nice system like looting, autopots, sieges but the support, lag and content were terrible and its a grindfest to the extreme. I did also tried Age of Conan and Warhammer on launch but came back to WoW. That's why I'm kinda hesitant to use my quality multiboxing time when Aion comes out. Aion launch has been delayed several times and I don't know if the September launch will even push through.

I was actually impressed with Aion during the chinese open beta. So much so that that i've now been telling my friends who are aware that i played it to simply fork over 4-8 bucks to try it themselves (chinese aion - that patches to english easily enough- has no box price, only hourly.) since 62 hours of game play gives a pretty good idea of what the game is about.

Multiboxing would be a tad complicated though. Gameguard would rule out software, would be a seperate computer for each account. Even then, its not a matter of spamming the same ability over and over again (wow style) rather, the use of an ability unlocks the use of other abilities and they almost all have seperate cooldowns... would be interesting, but difficult i would think. If you do try it out though, make sure to play on azariel with the majority of other english speakers.

Yeah its strange that it keeps being pushed back, especially when its all translated already. Those that 'found' the english text files to upload for use on chinese and korean servers proved that much. Guess it's more of a legal matter at the moment that's stalling them. Or... maybe they're waiting for another content patch release before going english? Who knows.

Does it have unlimited autofollow? I.e. out of group autofollow?

I suggest Star Wars Galaxi......ROFL. I couldn't even get it out before laughing Sorry I was just teasing. I would not suggest anyone to play that game. Now if they had precu? Hmm.

I am in kinda the same boat. I am little perturbed by recent nerfs and just general WOW drama I have decided to take a break. Not sure if I will come back at this time. Either way I am just waiting for SWTOR to come out and rejoin the SWG community.

I just downloaded and setup five accounts for Vanguard. Free 14 day trial. I figured I might as well check it out again.

So far (I am only L5 =)), I'd say it's likely to be much harder to multibox than WoW. Partially due to the lack of addons (although, I haven't done much research as of yet..maybe there are some good ones around) and the macro system. Looks like a lot of quests don't update the entire group either (e.g., whenver you have to interact with the enviroment to complete X tasks). It might just get too tedious for me to do 5, I think at most I would end up doing 3 since I have three computers.

It seems like anyone who boxes in Vanguard, usually just dual box. Although, IMO it's not really even dual boxing, it's just running two accounts from two computers and using one toon to buff (i.e., buffbot).
