I started playing this again after quitting WoW, LOL...
I've tried picking it up at least four seperate times while deployed here in Iraq, thinking it would be an amazing way to kill time.
I can't really seem to get a hold of it, mostly I think because my laptop doesn't have a number pad. I know you can reconfigure the keys, but that compounded with surfing the wiki is painfully slow on my Iraqi connection, leads to me not really figuring out how to do anything useful. Therefore, not much fun.
The game sounds amazing, I just wish I could actually play it.
oh the default controls are atrocious to learn
some control screens always take me a second to remember which set of selection keys to use
the UI is very much what you'd expect from someone who's OCD enough to code this game
i'd recommend redoing the hot keys, but the thing is you've got to learn them first

Finding magma
Volcanoes are visible on the "local" screen in the starting location chooser. It is represented as a red ? mark (a double tilde) - essentially it looks like red water. Note that red ? marks in the "region" screen mean something different entirely (e.g. red sand). If you are using a certain utility, you can also see magma pools and magma pipes on the local screen in the embark menu. After you have embarked for a place that has a volcano, and once your dwarves have arrived at their target destination, you should see a large red pool of lava on your map. If you don't, you should expect your volcano to be somewhere underground. You then have to use exploratory mining to find it. If you can find a large patch of obsidian on the surface that is devoid of boulders, chances are there is a magma vent below, so that would be a good place to start your mining.

Now I've learned how to play the game, and I was up till 1am the two previous nights because of it.
On a happy note the first time I tried to make a well, I didn't flood my base.
My first fel mood guy also had all the required goods to make his masterpiece, now if I could only find out how to locate it.
I'm currently at ~32 dwarves, but I don't remember exactly how many because a bunch of peasants decided to get eaten by the carp.

Why did you have to post this? I had no idea what Dwarf Fortress was until I saw this. Now I'm wasting all my time away with it.

For me, it has lots of the same attractions -- plenty of control and complexity (and modability too).
Only "downside" is the primitive graphics.
(WoW's graphics aren't the greatest either, but I love how WoW's art has near complete coordination.)
