How much damage are moonkins doing in PvP?

My gear sucks, but it's slightly improved. I purchased the full overcast gear for all my druids which gives me about 1100 spell power. I realize I'm still at the bottom of the list for damage, but I'm curious how good it can get.

Right now with three moonkins casting at someone with 22k health it still takes me a long time to kill. Usually they take one or two with them. I'd expect with the DPS being out of balance right now, and with moonkins topping some DPS charts in raids, that I'd be able to dish out some serious damage. However, right now I'm really struggling to take out one person even though it's 3v1.

So all you moonkins out there, how is your damage? What do your starfalls and wrath regularly hit for?

Also, knowing next to nothing about DKs, do they have an AoE silence? If so, what's the cooldown and how can I avoid it?!?

What is your playstyle and spec like? I have no WOTLK experience but I do have moonkin experience. Would not be surprised to hear that moonkins aren't dealing as much damage as every other class again - 1100 spellpower wasn't that much even in TBC, haven't heard of people complaining of mages doing too much damage now so.

I'll start by saying that moonkin are near the bottom of the PvP totem pole right now. Second only to warlocks in 'splat factor'. That being said. If you leave moonkin alone for very long they will wreck your world.

My Moonkin is currently sitting around 2050 spell power group buffed but at a pretty low crit percentage as I am fully resto geared. My wrath crits for around 5.8-6k on a target once i'm going on him. Not sure about starfall as usually while thats up theres too many numbers to keep track of.

My team is 1 moonkin 3x Arc mage and 1x priest so there are other buffs on me at all times such as int and Imp Spirit depending on preist spec at the time.

The last time I was in a BG my team was geared somewhat like
Moonkin - 1800 SP (my main - still resto geared)
Mages - 1010 - 1200 SP
Priest - 1500 SP

With those numbers my mages consistently outclass my moonkin at PvP dmg just due to the fire on the run capability. Admittedly this is probably because having 3x mage the moonkins needs as a dps'r take a backseat and he pretty much just does CC for me while my mages kill everything.

From a solo standpoint unless you let a moonkin bunker down on you and nuke he isn't killing anything, which sucks cause thats my chosen main.

With 3x arc mage casting on someone with 22k health and my moonkin rooting and typhooning healers/melee. I can usually kill that target before he knows which direction I came from.

If I were running 3x moonkin I might try something like:
Melee Opponent:
Opener: Typhoon on 2, entangling roots on the other - I've found it to be a godsend that I can toss a melee away from me and root them before they land.
Then nuke away while maintaining roots.

Caster opponent:
Drop your trees on mages, moonkin, healers. Mages will usually try and kill your trees before attacking you just cause they have the tools to do so leaving you time to kill him before PoM Pyro or counterspells.
Other moonkin will probably just be mad they got 9 trees dropped on them and gg. I would bet seasoned / geared healers can take you a long time to kill trees will help with that.
Other casters nuke away and round robin your Typhoons at them any time they use a spell with casting time. That gives you alot of interrupts and the upper hand.

Moonkin out utility mages IMO but you can't rely on DPS alone to win you fights as they are mainly casted spell fighters with high DPS low burst. Maybe if you had 5x moonkin, a starfire/moonfire volley could really hurt.

Thanks for the helpful tips! Admittedly I do not CC at the moment. I had plans to, but after seeing a couple arena games I quickly realized that the best thing to do was to die and not be frustrated... at least until my gear improves. I think I'll start trying to mix cyclones in on the healers, though right now I'm struggling to figure out where my moonkins are after a fear bomb or melee in my face (even though I have typhoons on rotation a rogue behind me seems to hurt badly.

I just checked out some youtube videos and holy hell, some of these "geared out" lv80 moonkin hit monsters for as much as I did on my moonkins at lv70 :(

Yup, blizzard has a "nice" system that scales your power down per stat as level increases. Whereas the +20 intellect may have given 1% crit at 70, it only gives 0.1% crit at 80 (numbers made up). Through this system there is no guarantee that a level 80 could do more DPS than a level 70 assuming both players are fighting equal level mobs. Due to the level difference, it's obvious that a level 70 would not be able to have great DPS against a level 80, but I certainly feel less powerful on my three moonkins at 80 than I ever did on my one moonkin at 70 in TBC.

Well, the idea is you are supposed to go from 500 int at level 70 to 1500 int at level 80, thereby providing the same "boost". Some classes, well, most, are insanely gear dependent. Mages, boomkins, warriors, etc. If you don't have really good gear, your DPS is going to be bad and you won't be able to kill players with good gear.

In our 10/25 man raids usually the #1 spot alternates between a hunter, a boomkin, a mage (me), and a 2h arms warrior. A boomkin can put out CRAZY damage, but you do need the gear to back it up. With the huge HP most people are running around with, even teams of 2-3 can't really kill a single geared person unless they can approach similar gear levels.

The good thing is that its not super hard to gear up, it just takes time and patience. Heroic end-boss drops and badge gear is on the same level as Naxx10 level gear. There abounds tons and tons and tons of great crafted epic gear. There are BoE epic drops from 25 man instances that can be bought. You just need a ton of time to farm the gold/mats/etc to buy the "best" things you can. And in that sense, WoW definitely rewards those who put in the most time, but not sure how else it would be done in a item-centric game like that.

That said the arena games are completely different from other things right now, and revolve around massive burst damage and survivability talents (iceblock, bubble, anti-magic, etc). Boomkins don't really have massive burst damage (DoTs) nor really high survivability so they will be near the bottom of the current arena totem pole. Ele shamans and warlocks suffer pretty much the same issues. We'll see what happens when things slowly get rebalanced with patch 3.08 and on, but its going to take a lot of time.

I'm thinking that maybe I need to solo box heroics for awhile until I get the instances down enough that I can confidently multibox. I've been waiting on RL friends to have time (and patience) for heroics, but it's not coming fast enough. I need some serious upgrades and I guess the best thing to do is just do them one-by-one...

Yea i noticed the samething on my druid team lack of sp and damage. Then i went onto my shaman team and was like wow ten lvls higher and still the same kind of dps. So thought im used to melee right with my dk's lets make enhanced shamans. Omfg theres nothing like going after a boss with 10 spirit wolfs and duel wielding with insane dps. I feel personal exp that enahnced is way better then elemental. Yes not as much mana but you do way more damage and u still can heal. So for me its deff enahnced sine u can get your main on top of rest and pull with a spell.

Err do you mean that you got 1100 spelldamage in total or extra with the new gear?

I certainly hope your not pvping with 1100 spelldamage! :P Well if the case are i can certainly see you are struggeling, i just feel i reached the point were i can survive most burst if my healer is around but overgeared ret paladins and bm hunters just rips me a new hole even now. How are you dealing with aoe fear btw?

I cant outdps a equal geared rogue or hunter, but with totem of wrath,windfury or wrath of air i bring WAY more overall dps.

Boomking druids brings some nice features but the raid realy only needs one while there are nice benefits in brining another shaman. Bloodlust can be kept up all the time when sated isnt up, windfury/warth of air/grounding, stacking mana/health totems + poison cleansing + disease cleansing.

I'm sorry to say, but it's 1100 SP in total. This is from the full overcast crafted set (lvl 78 BOE blues) and quest rewards in the other slots. So, basically your freshly minted lvl 80 set.

I did step foot into heroic Violet Hold yesterday (I think that's the one... I was in Borean Tundra) and I was able to take out fhe first boss (the one who fears and has two priests) with my mage friend and a pally tank. I'm still new to the multiboxing thing and it took about 7 wipes before we figured out a strategy where the tank wouldn't run too far from me when feared and so that I was out of fear range with a spread formation for the whirlwinds. It was satisfying, but I'm not sure my friends are going to have the patience to learn these new strategies required for multiboxing. They have been running heroics for well over a month and I'm not sure they like spending an hour to get one boss down (though I think he'll be one or two shotted in the future).

We got stuck on the mage lady who makes multiple copies of herself and throws you into the air. I think we would have got her down if I had more time, but the g/f was getting pissy.

In other words, I'm trying to get gear, but 1100 SP is all I have at the moment :( Hopefully is goes up quickly!

As a semi-geared moonkin that loves to pvp I'd have to say once geared we can put out a lot of dmg. In arena I dish out about 50k damage in 10 seconds. This is between treants, starfall, moonfire and wrath spam. The only down side is that we can be counter spelled, silenced, feared easy, stunned easy and die in 3 hits. But then again, who doesn't die in 3 hits these days. If you can stay up for more than 10 seconds and someone is in front of you they will go down. However, most smart targets will los a moonkin if they can and once you start chasing people its game over for us.

Hey owl i didnt know you were in hartford ct lol. I live in woodstock but goto school in hartford. Thats pretty cool u meet a boxer on line in game its friends for life but if you meet one in person you can set up to run your own raids without vent to bad we on different servers grrrr.

The Overcast set is actually pretty crap for Balance Druids...too much of the item budget are wasted with Spirit (which is more geared towards Resto druids). Ironically they arent bad PvE items for Balance druids...

However the good news is that the PvP Wyrmhide sets don't waste any stats with Spirit - they are all Stam / Int / Spell Power / Crit / Reslience:

So once you start gearing yourself up with the real PvP gear, you should find it much better in BG's and Arena's...
