I have never run this instance. In my goal to get 5x Exalted SSO I'm picking up extra dailies and I want to do the 2-3 MgT quests for the extra 500-750 rep, plus maybe I'll get some drops.
Unfortunately the section for MgT in the wiki has no information in it. Any hints on trash pulls or boss tactics I should use?
I'm running 5 70 shamans, all quest greens/blues but with the 5pc blue pvp set.
Just got to exalted on all my Shammies yesterday. To be honest, the dailies are a much more time-effective way of grinding your rep than MgT, though I did run through MgT a couple times to break up the boredom.
The quests in MgT only yield 250 rep each, IIRC there are three. One quest completion after the first boss, then the orb quest for which you need to get past Vexallus, finally the quest to kill Kael'thas. I didn't have too much trouble with the instance except that I could not kill Kael'thas. He was fine until the gravity lapse with the death orbs; with the just-keep-nuking strategy I got him down to 1-2% a couple of times before my guys all got orbed. I wasn't able to figure out how to effectively draw all 5 of my team away from the floating orbs before I gave up - I wiped about 10 times - grr.
On trash the standard 5 man shammy techniques work fine. In the larger groups, I would suggest dropping your grounding totems first and making sure their cooldown is up before initiating combat, so you can drop another set of 5 when the first set gets burned off.
For Vexallus, I spam the macro:
/target Vexallus
/target Pure Energy
/cast Lightning Bolt
In the courtyard before the priestess courtyard, you can creep along one of the sides and only clear half the mob groups.
In the courtyard with the priestess, I did not clear the two large mob groups behind the priestess. After taking her out, you can go straight into the building with KT inside.
The priestess encounter is pretty wack, but straightforward - burn the most dangerous guys first. I would use up most of my Earth Elementals on this one (don't really need elementals for Kael'thas) to give a little breathing room and remember to drop Tremor Totems - you will def. get feared.
The last big trash mob before KT is messy for pugs but not bad with focus fire and grounding totems.
As a reference point, I'm in mostly blues with a couple of epics and greens, about 680 spell damage at the moment.

Will try this tonight maybe. I am in all blues/greens (only epics are the 2 rings from the HH), I only have 500 spell damage on my shamans, 7300hp, 7600 mana or so.
Any tips for Kael? From what I read it looks like you can burn him down to 50% super fast (sometimes before a phoenix even spawns?) And then can you get your clones to follow you away from the orbs during the levitate or no? Should I try to burn him down to 0 during the levitate or just dodge orbs using instant cast dps when possible until the levitate ends?
My new strat on kael is pop all trinkets and stuff get him to 50% should go fairly fast. Then when he leviates you press your follow button and have everyone come back to the entrance. Since all your guys are moving together the bubbles should all move toward you. Just fly around the room for a bit healing when needed. After ~30 seconds you get put back on the ground and you can dps him more. It used to be a race b/w the time I was leviated and him dying or me dying. With this new strat I can down him on heroic without bloodlust easily. One things that also might help is summoning your fire elementals to dps him while you run around. I can try and post a video if this made no sense.
That seems pretty easy - guess I'll try it tonight and see :)
Edit: When would I summon the fire eles? At the beginning of th efight or right when he starts the levitation?
Fire eles are hit and miss usually for me. I get to max range (close to where the stairs are going toward him) then drop all my totems. I lay down 4 fire eles and my totem of wrath. The fire eles don't go after him until he runs toward your team. I have had some times that all the fire eles do is stand there and others where they will take him from ~30% to 1% while I am swimming around. I have also summoned a fire ele to close to him and made him despawn.
Just make sure you have some sort of star chain heal setup ( ie every toon targeting another toon and then casting chain heal). It is actually simple once you figure out how close you can come to the orbs.

This sounds like a great approach. I kept having my trailing guys get hit by the bubbles and start to drop off because I was trying to dps too aggressively. Good to know, although for the next week I'm gonna try to zerg my pally/3 mage team and a second multiclass team (priest/druid/lock/hunter) to 70. After that, on to Northrend!

Forget trying to target the second bosses adds. Let your shield kill them as stated in the video link above. Follow his instructions and its a cake walk.
Well I finally found the time to run this last night! Was actually quite fun and a learning experience. The only part I had trouble on was the second boss, I wiped 4 times before I re-watched the video to see what I was doing wrong. I just couldn't understand what was happening, because the boss would come up to me, and before I could get a single chain heal off, everyone was dead.
Anyway, turns out grounding totems absorb SOMETHING he does (still not sure what, but whatever it was it prevented me from getting hurt at all) and I killed him before bloodlust ran out.
Aside from that the rest of the instance was quite easy. First boss I simply DPSed him, killed him before he finished draining the first crystal. Second boss was fine once I used grounding totems (and lightning shield).
The big surprise was the 5v5. I thought it was going to be the hardest fight but it turned out to be the easiest. How easy you may ask? Let me put it this way, I forgot I could get feared, and shortly into the fight I got AoE feared to the point where none of my shamans were facing the right direction or within follow range... I managed to scoop them all back up, get them back into place, drop a new set of totems, and heal them, all without ever going below 75% health. I had gotten a mage, warlock, MS warrior, rogue, and the priestess. I dropped the MS warrior before he reached me, thats when I got AoE feared. I just kept groundings down, purged occasionally my target, and owned them one at a time, wasn't a big deal at all.
Last, Kael'thas - he was SUPER easy. Used all cooldowns and nuked him as fast as I could down to 50%. Gravity Lapse I just used 5x Earth Shock, swam around away from the bubbles (they were really easy to dodge), kept 5x ESing him every time cooldowns were up, then when he dropped me I killed him before the next gravity lapse. I did drop 4x Fire eles but only 1 even attacked him - guess the other 3 were too far away. Grounding totem pretty much makes him a wuss.
Will probably run this again tonight, just trying to get 5x exalted SSO and this actually gives something like 1400 rep per clear on normal mode even at reverred. Combine that with the dailies and thats a lot of rep per day.
One question...I've run MgT twice now. The second time was even easier, I didn't wipe at all on bosses, only wiped once in fact, at the same spot I wiped 3 times on the first run. How on earth do you guys deal with all the eels before the 2nd boss? When I pull 1 I end up pulling 15-20 and they kill me before i can get a single heal off.. Right now I am using a CL, then using 5x magma totems, but by the time they start dying off 1-2 of my guys are dead.
I could probably just use fire eles here or something but theres gotta be a better way. The only "successful" method I've tried is pulling 20-30 and using 5x thunderstorm + ele mastery, which mostly kills that group, but then it doesn't work on the next group.
Any tactics with 5 shamans for this part would be good as I have the entire thing down to a piece of cake besides that part!
For the worm packs I just drop 5x Novas and 1-2 thunderstorms and they all instantly die, as long as you time the nova drop correctly during the pull you can escape taking minimal damage. If you miss it on a pull you can fallback on using all remaining thunderstorms
Also try hitting up HM if you haven't yet, the difficulty seems to be pretty much on par with normal mode with bosses 1/3/4 being just as easy. Trash is a joke with thunderstorm/groundings, havent even tried it sense the nova stun change but thats a nice buff. Biggest difference is really Vexellus where you can't just zerg him down but you need to kill adds/heal/take it slow
I used to use fire eles also. make a macro like "castsequence cooldownfornova firenova totem, magma totem". I lay down healing totems *5 then shoot one worm with 5 lightning bolts switch to another target do 5 chainlightings quick. THen lay down stoneclaw totems followed by fire nova totems. When they explode put down the magma totems. This should finish them off pretty easy. If it doesn't just use a thunderstorm.
Good advice, I'll try that tonight probably, and maybe try heroic also (especially since my main can get the exalted SSO shield tonight after 1 set of dailies.
Now I'm confused. Maybe it was dumb luck before but I tried killing this boss on normal (vexallus) today and wiped 5 times before giving up.
I tried super nuking him with full bore LB/CL/Bloodlust/EM/Trinket/etc and I started healing when he did the pure energy thing (with lightning shield), and he killed me almost instantly.
I tried going very slowly, hitting him with LBs until he did the pure energy thing, then I sat and healed...it seemed like the pure energy things never went away...
anyway I tried every tactic I could think of until I gave up, he owned me every time. His "normal" hits hit my main shaman for 2300 damage so I can only take 2 hits before I have to start healing him...this is after buying the exalted SSO shield, ~8500 armor not including stoneskin totem. (but i hear his attacks do arcane damage anyway).
Any other advice? Should I be going fast or slow? When should I heal? What should I do with the pure energy? I'm using lightning shield but that doesn't seem to do a damn thing.
Vex sucks. What I do is spread everyone out and drop 5 earth eles to take care of the things he poops out. Then I just nuke him down. Try to get some spell damage food that might be enough to take you over the top dps wise. I remember the first time i killed him on heroic I killed him then my whole team died.
with vexallus the faster yeh kill em the more damage he those.

basically boils down to dps till the first adds spawn kill em, slow dps till the debuffs drops off, repeat till last 10% then just go all out
I've seen way overgeared groups just try and dps em down as quick as possible get sent the the gravyard in no time flat
It is possible just to dps him down if you can get him to spawn his first adds pretty quick then your earth elementals will pick them up and keep them away from your group. This is how I do him every time. Pop all trinkets and clickys he spawns the adds usually by the 2nd cast. If earth eles mess up and don't pick up the adds quick enough (ie adds are close to the group) then it very well could be a wipe.

that video is pre 3.02 so things have only gotten easier. I suggest buffing up if you are having dps problems. cost of 5 adept elixir's/spell damage food is nothing compared to 25 10% durablitiy losses.
Don't get too down on yourself Vex was what I had problems with when I first started also. It took me several attempts/gear upgrades to finally down him on heroic. I remember wiping at 2% once fully buffed. That really sucked.
I did try running Heroic MgT last night also but decided to call it quits after the 3rd pull. The 4 man pulls near the beginning were just too much, required too much effort to complete for not enough reward. (basically had to use EVERY cooldown on each pull, including 5 thunderstorms, etc). I doubt I could have taken down any bosses.
Maybe once I have 4 more of the shields/pendants from SSO exalted which will be in a few days, and enchanta ll my gear that would help. My clones all have the shield from one of the first HFP quests right now which is ~1500 armor less than the SSO exalted shield I think. I have a 375 enchanter but have not enchanted any of my characters' gear except +18 stam to shield on my main :)
Yeah I've given up on ever even attempting heroic MgT...
The ONLY way I can even kill Vexallus on regular MgT is to burn him down as fast as possible and ignore the adds. Something is either bugged with him or all the strategies people are saying are wrong or don't work anymore...
Case in point, tonight I tried him 3 times. I used 2 LBs to bring him down to 83% then started healing. He spawned a pure energy, then another pure energy (I had lightning shield on). They used their thing on me but neither one disappeared even though I had lightning shield on. They just kept doing it forever until all my guys were dead.
So, attempt #2, I set up a castsequence macro on 2 of my shaman:
/target Pure Energy
/castsequence Earth Shock,
/cleartarget
(obviously on shaman #2 earth shock was second). Anyway, Attacked him down to 83% again, he summoned 2 pure energies, killed one then the other (meanwhile I wasn't attack him AT ALL, he was still at 83%). He kept summong them over and over again, I would kill a couple, then he'd summon a couple more. This kept going until again I was dead since my chain heals can't even come close to healing through it.
Last, I just burned him down, bloodlust, ele mastery, trinket, blood fury, spam LB+CL, the first time the pure energies spawned I spammed 2 Chain heals then went back to LB+CL again - killed him with all my guys at around 2k HP. This is how I win every time but I just can't see how the whole "take it slow and easy" thing even comes close to working, the pure energies are never ending.
I find regular Vexallus to be pretty easy with my pally - 3x locks - priest combo. Impossible on Heroic. Ack. I started boxing in part due to fascination with MgT multibox vids on youtubem and so am a little frustrated that I'm unable to tackle it on heroic (or even regular, post-Vex). Mebbe it's all about the shamans.
I am in this club too. I can beast it down on normal now....I generally go all out on Vex and occassionally hit the pure energies.....I actually use fire elementals for this fight though instead of earth elementals. Also on the 5 v 5 fight its over in about 40 secs so I dont use the elementals there either. For the last pull before the final boss, thats when I use my earthies. Then on Kael I rock him until 50ish% then do the little swim thing and light him up when I land.
Heroic MGT
Different animal indeed. The trash pulls I can handle...sometimes its dicey. The first boss is cake. The Vex on heroic doesnt like cake and makes no qualms about letting me know that. So I cant continue.
Hm, I never thought that it would be so difficult with 3 locks? Did you try letting pets destroy the flares and simply let them die after a while? Also, did you try skilling nether protection in the destro tree? If both of these work it sounds rather simple. Round robin killing the flares and spamming coh / poh on the priest. Thats pretty much what I do with my shaman team now if I've got the priest healer instead of the shaman healer (and I don't heal with the dd shaman). If you try that you'll want to have a way to activate the shadow fiend though, since it's rather mana intense :)Quote:
